- shrewduser, on 10/11/2007, -8/+30linux is making inroads into windows on all fronts at the moment....
personally i'm sick of the way Microsoft treat me and their customers, so this is a good thing.... - KalleK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21ehh???
- capiCrimm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8linux is still friendly to the idea of alternatives. BSD and Mac come to mind. However, your argument doesn't make sense. If people didn't like their OS more then other OSes they probably wouldn't be using it. Now would they. So, if you like something, you normally recommend it to friends. No linux user will ever tell you you *must* use one piece of software. BSD/Linux, Gnome/KDE, and vi/emacs are obvious examples. That's the difference. If it seems like Linux users have animosity for other OSes it's not for being different then them, it's for being less tolerant and open.
There is a difference between "recommending" Linux as our favorite Windows alternative, and disliking Microsoft for it's tactics and motives. - Megatog615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Can't believe it but I'm agreeing with schestowitz.
*ducks* - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Linux gives people a choice, people should not be forced to buy a low quality DRM/activation/WGA/spyware infected OS from an abusive monopolist. The Vista EULA is frightening, and the pricing is absurd, people deserve better than what they are getting from MS. There will be a steady erosion of MS market share as people flee their horrid software dictatorship, and switch to the superior Linux OS.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? You can make a point politely. This dupe was not a deliberate one.
- xdigitalkill, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Linux users need recognition from the major hardware and software vendors in order to get drivers and software ported to Linux, the best way is to increase their market share to make them noticeable.
- OmegaNine, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I think you are thinking of Mac users.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4As a Software Programming Major you should know that whether Linux get there or not is entirely up to developers like you. You don't wait for it to get there and then jump on board because that would simply make you a sheep not a visionary. Industry and Business used to depends on Unix and mainframe, time has change like it has once changed. If you are doing Software Programming to make money then I would recommend you to look at the short-term and the long term. Windows is the short-term but it won't be the long term. The jobs market for open source developers like ruby, python, java is picking up. Especially when the next big thing would be mobile apps where linux dominate. So keep in mind your short-term and long term because your career is much more dynamic than a plumber or a doctor.
KDE 4 will be released on Windows as well as Linux. Already that's a large opportunity for cross-platform programming. - realwx, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Buried as duplicate.

- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3All the Windows adverts are spam I agree.
- facelogic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3humped as sexlicate
- straps, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As a Software Programming "Minor" I can demonstrate that you could switch to Linux and make more money that with Windows...the license money :)
Windows apprently works well, but when customers see the stability and efficency of Linux, they don't want Windows nomore... - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yea there's so much you can do with javascript. Please, real development will be done on the openMoko. iPhone is only for techno-gadget freaks who love shiny toys, not real business application
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3why does the 1st comment has to be from some ***** like u?
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2> I have more freedom to choose my software on Windows
You might have freedom to choose your software but you don't have the freedom to use the software the way you see fit. I take it you never bother to read EULA on windows platform. What GUI interfaces for management of project? Oh you mean the piece of crap call ms project? Real project managers use Primavera and guess what there's an enterprise linux version - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Unless they include J2ME and bind the appropriate libraries. Then it's smooth sailing all the way. Of course the iPhone will be able to do the same, I mean in this day and age *nobody* is stupid enough to make a high end phone without J2ME support...
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Here's a hint. Because you are reading an article in the LINUX section!!
We don't push our OS onto anybody else. You are sadly mistaken. You assume that since you read news in a linux section, every linux users advocating the OS, it somehow means that we want you to use our OS. No! It is quite the contrary. We use what we want and you can use what you want, but that doesn't stop us from thinking that some other OSes are a little bit inferior.
Now please indicate exactly where we specifically tell you to stop using windows/mac/etc and use linux? Your rant is idiotic and moronic. - strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Strangely both groups have gotten kind of militant about their OS, its disturbing. I always cry out "Lets not become Mac users with out behavior!" but no one listens.
- Megatog615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yup. With OpenMoko running Linux, it's only a matter of recompiling applications to run on the CPU arch.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kudos daftman.....sic133 is there something in ur id?
- straps, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"A Microsoft representative said Monday no one was available from the company to comment on the Evans Data report"...
... That's strange ... - teckieee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21 "MS users/dev/company moving to Linux post" FOR EVERY "Linux users/dev/company moving to MS paid advert"
so far its 29312832 is to 21912049. we need more post like this to get it 1:1 come on people!!! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0There are people using Windows on a server............that is scary.
- SouLFacE, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1http://www.digg.com/microsoft/Survey_Windows_loses_ground_with_developers
we already have this story in frontpage. - MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1How did you think open source PR worked?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -18/+17Vista is trash! Linux has an obvious cost, quality and freedom advantage over the pathetic Windows platform.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I prefer to think of Windows as a Linux alternative. A bad alternative but an alternative none the less.
- FutureGuy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I do see why, that's their life's work. If I spend my life creating a product that no one even uses for free I might get desperate too especially if I never even got paid for it. Ohh yes and windows is losing market share big time read this http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid39_gci1260325,00.html
- Sic133, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4I normally don't comment much, but as a Software Programming major I have the urge to express my opinion. I believe Linux is cool and all, have tried it a few times (have Sabayon 3.4 loop 2 installed) and it's come a long way, but it's still not there. I don't care if you guys digg me down, but that's how I feel. For the college student like me, it's nice that there are ways to learn and practice, but I see it as a long time carreer and choice, something that will be productive and will leave you profit with what you do and that is Windows right now. Also, Industries and business still depend on Windows, because believe it or not, it works for them.
But hey, I'm waiting for KDE 4, plasma and the merge of Beryl and Compiz. - mushroom, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1You just describe a spammer
- CriticalImpacta, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Amen to that brother.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1you dont say. then could you care to explain how can do the same things that you can do on linux and more on my Windows XP? EULA matters ***** to most and even less so to those who know the "correct way" to get their copy. Unless linux consolidates then it will never become mainstream.
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -21/+18Jesus ***** Christ on a flaming pogo stick of death.

Stop ejaculating into your eyes and we wouldn't have this problem. - FutureGuy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3some rough words there, did you get fired from your COBOL job earning 200$ per line? Vista's EULA is not worse the what you would get if you install a Google software or Apple's. Any company with decent market value (not desperate linux distros) would have strong EULA to protect their business. And price!!! you would be paying 10000$ for a PC from IBM if not for MS, linux wouldn't even have existed.
- d3dm, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4Who cares about developing for a PC???? Don't you meatheads know? It's all about the iPhone right now! GOSH!
- fugazi, on 10/11/2007, -18/+12Why do Linux users find that they must push their OS upon everyone else. No I am not saying that the article will say this but every comment on this page soon will. It seems they believe since they found the right OS for them that everyone else must use it. Ok so now that that is over with...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3chezmywits the GNU/Troll strikes again. Not content with spamming Usenet, Netscape and 10 other sites with his infantile aggressive "advocacy" *****, he's now trying to make sure Digg feels his wrath as well by getting his groupies to promote duplicates of the same lame stories. Holy mother of god man, rent a ***** life.
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.linux.advocacy/topics - strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -13/+6As a Linux and Windows user, I have more freedom to choose my software on Windows, where there is usually one or no solutions for what I want on Linux.
Linux has great uses, but so does Windows, thats why it keeps staying around no matter how much the Linux culters whine and complain and force OSes onto people. I use my Linux box for development testing, or when I need sheer power in processing projects, I still use my Windows box for the GUI interfaces I use to manage and work with my projects though. - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -35/+2So much for freedom of choice, nope, have platforms/licenses 'forced' upon you, yay !
