- rmjb - Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Here's a big "***** You" to Larry Ellison for trying to drive down RedHat's stock prices for a buy-out by distributing Oracle Linux (copy of RedHat with logo change). Just FYI Larry, buying out open source companies won't stop the movement.
-A happy RedHat investor who've held onto to them for 3+ years now. - jivatmanx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Good. I hope everyone understands the message that has been sent loud and clear: Companies that support open source will be supported.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Here's another big "***** YOU" to Larry Ellison for trying to buy JBoss a while back.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here's another "***** you Larry!" for all of us who've actually had to install Oracle on a system.

http://tinyurl.com/y57we9 - Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Seriously though, good for them.
They are offering a quality product with quality support and are aggregating revenue streams and development platforms like a mother and still being smart and taking their time with things like Xen.
Sure Fedora is another story...but good for them. - jaredcwhite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Whoa, I'm glad I invested in some RHAT (sorry, RHT) a few weeks ago. I had a feeling the analysts were full of it and Red Hat would be doing pretty well. Some folks just don't understand open source companies. You pay for their products/support because you trust the company to deliver the goods and Do. The. Right. Thing. Novell partnering with M$ or a dinosaur like Oracle capitalizing on Red Hat's had work is hardly the right thing.
- mortalfunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That's the whole point. It's not about market share for a company, it's about profit. Who cares if linux is below 5%? The fact that free software is producing a profit is fantastic.
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6vince....you have much to learn about the manipulation of numbers.
First up I would go to your local library and learn how to use numbers to your advantage to help you prove a point, and not how to have them point out what a douche you are.
Next week kids, Taylor Polynomials....! :D - OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We use RedHat at work, in fact we are getting ready to upgrade to RH4. They used it long before I got there, and it was a PROGRAMMER that admins it. (that means it really easy to use)
I think they did it right, and no one else really did. Kinda sucks they went payware to do it. But hey, everyone's gotta eat. - scilec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love Red Hat Linux. But, I can't afford to pay for the support. A GREAT alternative is CentOS. It's essentially a binary compatible clone of Red Hat and all of the updates are free. At work, I currently support a development team that uses hundreds of virtual machines as well as physical boxes and most of them are running CentOS 4, which is the same as Red Hat Enterprise Server 4.
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3May I have an amen....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Marked as inaccurate. Red Hat's net profit fell from 23.2 million dollars an year ago to 14.6 million dollars recently.
Don't know what you intend with these lies... - rmjb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Meh, I want to see next quarter's results. The events that occurred in this quarter may not have had a significant effect on this quarter. A lot of business deals take more than a quarter to finish anyhow. The real test are the next 4 quarters or so.
I still support RedHat though.
- rmjb - Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Agreed. Analysts rarely know what the hell is going on until after the fact, even then it takes a while to sink in. I love how all the guidances and price estimates go up AFTER the earnings report. Well no ***** Sherlock. When Oracle announced their distribution of Linux a lot of the "analysts" cut estimates and ratings. You would think that these "professionals" would know a bit more about the business or have cooler heads. Being a hedge fund employee I can tell you that Wall Street is:
1. Filled by a lot of morons who are full of themselves. (Some dumb ass at J P Morgan tried to sell one of our guys a hedge on the Hong Kong dollar, even after our trader explained to him that it's pretty much pegged to the USD).
2. WAY behind on understanding technology and how it works and what's going on when compared to Digg or Slashdot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed. While Revenues have increased, net income for both the quarter and the year have significantly decreased.

- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Vince, go blow it up your fat ass. If you had invested in Red Hat you might not be so poor.
There, I said it. Merry Christmas. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2CentOS is great, it's all I use on the servers. A ton of commercial applications are meant to install on top of Redhat Enterprise so it's nice to have a free alternative that takes advantage of the commercial linux world.
- muddo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1congrats to redhat. this is a beautiful thing to see. even though it is an inferior distro to debian and gentoo, this is good for open source.
- vince1731, on 10/12/2007, -24/+3Red hat, Suse, Ubuntu, etc - all dead in the water.
The market share is sub 2% for all linux variations so what's the point?
Tout nu sur la plage.
