- MarthaBiggly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16There's also reKordmydesktop for KDE users which is a frontend for recordmydesktop
- motang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Sweet, could be used to make howto videos.
- HornyFox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12the "average user" can do a copy/paste.
- saftaplan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Come on, what's the simplest way of saying it:
paste "sudo apt-get install recordmydesktop gtk-recordmydesktop" in your terminal, or:
go to system -> administration -> synaptic, click search, enter recordmydesktop, select recordmydesktop and gtk-recordmydesktop and click apply.
Easy isn't quick. - jlebrech, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10sudo apt-get install istanbul
if you have feisty fawn.
istanbul supports capturing the 3d comp managers. - coredump0x01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaptic
Are you wondering why the average human doesn't look farther then their noses? - GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10shell commands are easy
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8That's the katchiest damn thing I've seen in a while.
- ilovemusic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I've tried this program in xubuntu/kubuntu but have problems with the video output. I like xvidcap, outputs to mpeg and the encoding seems quicker. http://xvidcap.sourceforge.net/
- mvent2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9services.msc
And you guys still wonder why your average user doesn't want anything to do with Windows?
This is a quicker way, that doesn't mean there's a slower GUI Windows-like way. Synaptic, look it up. - GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8yeah, I was jut going to suggest xvidcap, it really does get the job done and has a lot of output formats.
- elvenseven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Get a life
- mvent2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Dammit, I meant "that doesn't mean there's _not_ a slower GUI Windows-like way"
- leszek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4when was the last time you used linux ? 1998 ?
- Youssif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's because it's still available to other distros as well. But Ubuntu is the most known distro of Linux those days. That's why.
Regards, - Galning, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i would actually recomend yukon, its only availible in CVS, but it works great for gaming.
http://www.neopsis.com/projects/yukon/browser/trunk - robuk24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Brilliant. Ubuntu needed this. I tried a few out last year but I ended up using XP.
- nixfu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6@csulok... by skipping use of the whole new lame ass piece of crap commenting system and starting a new comment try below the previous one by @cajie....
IT WAS EASIER to read your response to him.
Man digg is junk now. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So for you is easier browse the entire web for a useful freeware/shareware/payware app than just paste a command in a terminal and press ENTER?
- webspot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/
They use a different method of recording though. A better one IMHO:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ScreencastTeam/RecordingScreencasts - MattD1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2recordmydesktop and gtk-recordmydesktop are also available from the Synaptic Package Manager if you don't want to use the terminal.
- popey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2We use xvidcap for the screencasts on http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/ for much the same reason.
- damentz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Its in debian and its also 'krecordmydesktop'

root@damentz-box:/home/god# - morphir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3for KDE users on kubuntu: sudo apt-get install recordmydesktop qt-recordmydesktop
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If you dont have to go look for the commands to enter then the terminal IS the fasest easiest way to install stuff in Ubuntu Linux(or any linux)
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1doesn't os x count as a posix system (from what I have found on wikipedia it does unsure though)
and based on what is said on sourceforge xvidcap is a posix supporting program
so in some possible way couldnt you install that - DCJoeDogaswell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is what I use as well, I use it to capture 3d game footage, since I use Ubuntu and cannot use FRAPS
- Aliarse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Are you going to explain why the average user doesn't want anything to do to Linux, or do we have to guess? Because i consider myself an "average user", and had no problem copy/pasting the same thing you did into the terminal.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Can anyone tell which is the best solution to record compositing managers? (Compiz, Fusion, beryl, etc)
- sicapitan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2fr00t
- Four20, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3phruit
- kick52, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i hope a decent open source screen recorder comes to os x soon.
maybe this could be ported? (doubt it) - popey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Other than ffmpeg of course which doesn't ship on the CD. So you'd have to install that anyway. None of the screencast soloutions on linux are that hard to install including istanbul, xvidcap, recordmydesktop, demorecorder, vncrec, vnc2swf... etc
- Xenogis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've always used instanbul.
(I never knew recording screencasts was hard :P) - popey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Istanbul is probably the easiest bet. It has a mode for recording 3d desktops.
- Disfnord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm not finding qt-recordmydesktop in feisty, are you sure your not getting it from a third party repo?
- arnott7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This will be useful and it works on Fedora 7 too. try 'yum install gtk-recordmydesktop'
- SmileyChris, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3This comment made me bury the article as "lame".
- durkka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0It's possible to record your X screen using only ffmpeg. No extra packages required!
- jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1***** conservative, what if this thread had 300 comments?
And maybe we don't give a ***** about his reply, we would have clicked the link to expand the thread if we did. - DCJoeDogaswell, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3didn't you just do the same thing and start a whole new comment tree? You are what's causing confusion, stop bein g a prick and just reply to the ***** reply
- xnyhps, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Oh I agree with you completely. I always use apt-get instead of Synaptic. In fact, I hate synaptic because it's so terribly slow. It's just that if this is considered easy they will never get the 'average' user to use Linux.
apt-get is for speed, Synaptic for easiness. - geekelixir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Nice find. thanks
- cajie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Obviously, you guys are more passionate than I gave credit, and cannot take light-hearted jabs.
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaptic
"Synaptic is a computer program which is a GTK+ graphical user interface and front-end to the Advanced Packaging Tool for the Debian package management system. Synaptic is usually used on systems based on deb packages but can also be used on systems based on RPM packages. It can be used to install, remove and upgrade software packages and to add repositories."
Let me state it again. :)
And you guys still wonder why your average user doesn't want anything to do with linux? - cajie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2You'll need to figure it out.
- myklm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0It`s very easy.
Linux native installer for "The Witcher"game: http://www.petitiononline.com/7730722/petition.html - 9a3eedi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I saw the title in my RSS feed.. and was actually relieved to find that the title says "Linux" instead of "Ubuntu"
but then it says "Ubuntu users" in the description. massive disapointment. - joshshu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1http://digg.com/linux_unix/Venezuela_Launches_Sale_of_Bolivarian_Computers
Venezuela is running on Linux? is it like dictatorship OS? - renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I thought it was called "recordmyspinningcube"
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1The summary says it all!!!
