Real 3D interface by Compiz Fusion soon?
pramnos.com — An post from the Compiz Fusion Blog informed us about some interesting things that are under development. Imagine a very cheap 3D interface with head tracking, using the WII Remote... Isn't it a great idea?

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/- romistrub, on 02/11/2008, -7/+2Holy shiznat. That deserves its own submission. No way it wouldn't make it to the front page.
- Heretushi, on 02/11/2008, -1/+14It made it to front page already. A couple of times.

Thanks a lot for the C# code buddy, gonna do me good in three years...

- z0mbie2099, on 02/11/2008, -21/+2I was wondering when they'll start performance tweaking instead of bringing out a gazillion plug-ins I'll never use.
- Philluminati, on 02/11/2008, -3/+20oi, stupid!
The point of a plugin is that it is code users can enable and disable at their choosing. They can choose not to have it loaded in memory or to expand the product later without upgrading the whole thing. Since you hate plugins and performance tweaks I'd advise you not to use anything with the Linux Kernel because it probably contains modules (plugins) for hardware you don't use. A massive massive waste, honestly ;-)- DarkDx, on 02/11/2008, -2/+8Smart coment on digg -must-resist-to-bury-arrr
j/k - schoate09, on 02/11/2008, -7/+2But that doesn't change the fact that not only is their effort going to what he feels is mostly useless, but also that the download is inflated with crap that not only makes it larger, but requires time to disable all of the extra plugins.
- aywwts4, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Yeah, ***** you coding monkeys, why don't you code the stuff _I_ Think is the most useful for free. stupid monkey geeks.
(as a side note I thought when you install compiz almost everything is disabled, you manualy enable it, that and the additional plugins are a separate package, and finally, compiz is almost entirely eyecandy, 90% of it could by any objective assessment be deemed "useless".)

- Philluminati, on 02/11/2008, -2/+54That is the best 3D I've ever seen. It actually looks like he passes one of the targets (when it really just leaves the screen). It's mind boggling. Anyway I'd love that to be in Compiz.
- Philluminati, on 02/11/2008, -1/+16Also, my friend, for his degree wrote a linux driver that allowed you to control the mouse with your eyes (just using a web cam). Essentially this means you could have a 3D cube without wearing any silly glasses.
- logic, on 02/11/2008, -0/+11Where can I find this driver?
- Philluminati, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1I don't really speak to him anymore but it was pretty much a basic version of this: http://digg.com/software/Head_tracking_Pointer_Web ...
Only it used an eye tracking algorithm rather than a head tracking algorithm and he did it a few years before this guy.

- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+16Having actually tried this Wii Headtracking using Johnny Lee's software and using the wiimoteproject.com website for guidance, I have to warn you that the effect is less pronounced in real-life. Since the camera uses a single lens, as opposed to your stereoscopic vision, the lack of depth perception helps the illusion. If you do this and you have both eyes open, you'll go, "Meh." So if you want the same illusion as in the video, make sure you have one eye closed. What needs to happen is someone needs to develop/hack together polarized glasses to work with this: that would be the key to really pulling the illusion off.
- Ki77erB, on 02/11/2008, -3/+0I think the idea of having to wear special glasses is going to be a turn off no matter how they do it. I don't want to wear special glasses every time I use my computer. Hopefully in the future, they will be able to pull this off without any headgear.
- chubbstar, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4with contact lenses!
(seriously though, how else would they pull this off. holograms?)
- chubbstar, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4with contact lenses!
- marx2k, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0finally a decent use for the Sega Master System 3D glasses. Those things were amazing

- depro9, on 02/11/2008, -2/+23That was amazing! This better make the front page.
- funkywood, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6I like the finger tracking. E.T. actually had glowing fingers for a reason after all. His planet obviously figured this out.
- jeremyjudkins, on 02/11/2008, -1/+18This is what the wii was designed to do !!!
- skyshock1, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3No, the Wii was designated for multi-player games. Unfortunately that wouldn't work out all that well on the same monitor for multiple people.
- zplot, on 02/11/2008, -3/+12The Wii's remote certainly has potential beyond one entertainment system. Glad to see people experimenting on the remote for other uses.
- provost, on 02/11/2008, -0/+24its not overly practical, but its way cool. Hopefully one day it will become practical.. Honestly, just for the 'wow' factor its worth using, just like compiz is now.
I travel frequently, and I love to get my laptop out on the plane and hear people behind me say 'did you see that?' as I spin the cube, drag windows and the like. Compiz really enhances the computing experience.- jt123, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6agreed on the practicality issue... this basically means you'd have to be moving your head around, which may be cool for games, but as a desktop interface (especially if you use it while sitting down) it will create otherwise unnecessary movements for the user.
- mecenday, on 02/11/2008, -0/+13i dunno... seems practical to me... you could add all sorts of real estate to the desktop doing this. Imagine the taskbar always being just below the edge of your monitor, tilt your eyes to see what's running without losing realestate in the workspace. Ditto for widgets/contextbar/sidebar off the right side of your monitor.
- jt123, on 02/11/2008, -2/+1i'm not sure what you mean by 'tilting your eyes', but in order for this to work you have to physically move your head. if you have the wii-mote close to your head, it is possible to 'move' your head by merely tilting (your head), but this would require your eyes to remain focused onto the same area of screen, and i don't know if you've tried to do that, but it is somewhat unnatural and unintuitive.
i'm not saying there's no room for development for this type of concept, but the particular implementation, from the descriptions so far, seem a little strange. - reclone5, on 02/12/2008, -0/+0jt123 is right on that, this doesn't work the same as pointing the wiimote at your TV, it is backwards. Tilting your head will make very little effect on the position(The Wiimote won''t see much happening, try "tilting your eyes" while looking out a window and see how much the landscape changes) You have to physically move your head up to see whats hiding on the bottom of the screen or vice versa. The 3D effect would be much better applied to games in my opinion.

- stargatesteve, on 02/11/2008, -23/+3the wiimote idea is actually a terrible idea. A basic rule of thumb for interface design is to make it an transparent and fast as possible. The last thing most users are going to want to do is use a wiimote to switch desktops. There is a reason that Apple, the king is interface design, creates keyboard shortcuts for EVERYTHING.
- Skod, on 02/11/2008, -3/+5Shortcuts that create an unfortunate learning curve for the rest of us humans. I prefer my UI to be intuitive and never require the use of a manual if possible, and it took me years to discover that clover+f12 or whatever was eject on a G4. Keyboard shortcuts are wonderful as a redundancy system, but ***** should be intuitive.
- stargatesteve, on 02/11/2008, -4/+2Huh, odd. I used a G4 for a while, and I always thought the eject key was the eject key.
- Skod, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1The keyboard I was using didn't have one. Couldn't tell you why because I attempt to avoid macs so I wouldn't know their chronology.
- stargatesteve, on 02/11/2008, -4/+2Huh, odd. I used a G4 for a while, and I always thought the eject key was the eject key.
- thedpshow, on 02/11/2008, -2/+4Ah! That explains why the Wii is doing so poorly! ...I was wondering.
It's not actually that much of a stretch, and it wouldn't be implemented in the end with a wiimote anyway.- stargatesteve, on 02/11/2008, -5/+1ok, think for a second. The primary entry system for the wii is the wiimote, not the keyboard. the primary entry system for a computer is a keyboard, not a wiimote.
- HonoredMule, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I think I can survive having a head-tracking sensor mounted on my monitor while still using a keyboard and mouse with perspective-relative resolution of clicks (which would make its use as intuitive as it is now on a 2d surface).
- stargatesteve, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1oh, that'll be real good. Something like:
you work on computer
guy walks in door
you turn to say hi
you turn back, to see a different desktop
he asks what that is
you turn to answer
@#%$#%^&^@$#
good, real good.
- stargatesteve, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1oh, that'll be real good. Something like:
- sybesis, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1i would love to know what will it provide...why would i need a moving screen????
using it with a 76" screen may be but seriously my 17" is pretty useless.

- awesomeface, on 02/11/2008, -2/+8This is more of a proof of concept ya moron. It wouldn't end up actually being the wiimote.
- stargatesteve, on 02/11/2008, -8/+2proof of concept for what? with what intent? This wouldn't actually prove anything. we already have our spinning cube, and we already have our wiimote entry system. so this is proving that we can do key-bindings! what a revolutionary proof of concept!
- iericg, on 02/11/2008, -2/+2I wonder if that is what programmers thought back in the days when the GUI operating system was introduced.
- stargatesteve, on 02/11/2008, -5/+2yes. look at the early GUIs for X11. very simple, easy to use. But I guess you're too young to remember.
- stanleyford, on 02/11/2008, -3/+4Except you don't actively use the Wiimote. In the setups illustrated, the Wiimote passively reads infrared signals, either through an emitter attached to a piece of clothing, or through infrared light reflected from your fingertips. In Compiz Fusion, you don't use Wiimote, Wiimote uses you.
- Tippis, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6"There is a reason that Apple, the king is interface design, creates keyboard shortcuts for EVERYTHING"
Except, of course, that they don't. There are *TONS* of UI elements that cannot be quickly accessed or navigated using the keyboard.- stargatesteve, on 02/11/2008, -5/+1name a few of these "*TONS*" you speak of. I know of about 3. none of which many people care exist.
- Tippis, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3All drop-down menus.
All context menus.
The Dock.
All menu bar icons.
Anything placed on the desktop.
Most UI elements in the finder.
Most modal window controls except the Ok and Cancel buttons.- stargatesteve, on 02/12/2008, -1/+1so, basically all the stuff I use keyboard shortcuts for?
- Tippis, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1And what is the keyboard shortcut for, say, the Apple menu, praytell?
What is they keyboard shortcut to access the dock options?
What is the keyboard shortcut for the Airport menu? - willr001, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2ctrl+esc/winkey
what's a dock
ctrl+esc/winkey, then tab twice into sys tray and select w/arrows, then space to activate notification/system icons
wait, that's windows... which does have shortcut keys for everything (useful when your monitor doesn't work, and yes, i've done it before) I did learn a new one a few weeks ago that i couldn't believe i didn't know before: ctrl+shift+esc for task manager
now that i've switched to linux, i'm lost as a keyboard shortcut user
- Tippis, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3All drop-down menus.

- sybesis, on 02/12/2008, -2/+2Upmodded you because you're right and they are all pussies...
this thing doesn't provide anything usefull.
I bet you're loosing a lot of time using a wiimote to switch desktop while the mouse or keyboard can do it without moving a lot.
Yeah the key to efficiancy in computer is not making a lot of move...that why using a mouse isn't really productive when you have your two hand on the keyboard. Thats why i believe mac is the king in UI,,,Keep it simple stupid as we say.
Not much complicated menu like windows or Kde...gnome is closer to Osx but still lack at some place...- stargatesteve, on 02/12/2008, -1/+1one thing lacking is a good quicksilver replacement. yeah, I know they are out there, but they are still kinda unstable.
- mojojojo, on 02/11/2008, -15/+2You know what would be great? Someone in the linux camp to actually innovate on UX rather than just emulate. Hopefully this will prove more interesting than the projects we've seen. Full of promise but fall flat on function (no pun intended).
- provost, on 02/11/2008, -1/+13yes, because noone ever rips off linux/unix, its always the other way around. Xwindows didnt exist before any other gui.. transparencies didnt exist either. I am fairly confident that network commands that are so similar on windows MUST have been stolen by *ux folks, thats the only explanation.
Like it or not, most of the things that make your computer experience so cohesive got their start in Unix, not any other OS. I remember when windows2000 came out, there were big billboards that said 'built for the internet' with a big graphic of a box of windows 2000.
So I had a bunch of shirts made that on the front had a windows logo that said 'some OS's were built for the internet' and on the back it had a penguin that said '.. while others actually built the internet'
Wish I still had one of those shirts. - githoc, on 02/11/2008, -2/+1So linux rips off as well then as almost everything started in Unix according to you!
- stredarts, on 02/11/2008, -9/+0I like how it talks about multiple users. Head tracking only works for one user. For everyone else it makes no sense. Plus since this isn't using an autostereoscopic display, the effect only works when your head is moving.
Not only that, but how does this make UI any better? You have to move your head, mouse and fingers all at the same time now? Its like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time.- awesomeface, on 02/11/2008, -0/+9He said it only makes sense for one user...and pointed out that the head tracking doesn't work for two people. So...rfta? (or I guess technically, watch the youtube video).
- iericg, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2He mentions in another video that it's not really practical because your hands get tired after a while.
I don't care I just like idea of standing up and moving my body to interact with the computer. That is why I traded my PS3 for Wii. May not be practical but it spices up things up a bit. - Orion682, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Let's see... Look at the left edge of the screen and the cube turns left, ditto for the other side, so you can look at your multiple desktops quickly without having to switch to them, and more intuitively, like it's an actual cube. Wanna zoom in on something, look closer at the screen and the screen zooms at what you're looking it. there are lots of possibilities for improved UI with this sort of setup, you just have to think outside the box. Times like this make me glad that one of my concentrations was interface design :)
- powerjg, on 02/11/2008, -9/+6One thing to remember is we have stereo vision, it looks really amazing on the video since the camera only has one 'eye' In real life it won't look quite as good.
- iericg, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7So if I close one eye will it look better?
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Yes!
- monospaced, on 02/11/2008, -3/+3You're wrong.
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3I've done this with Johnny's software, powerjq is very correct.
- caltrop, on 02/11/2008, -5/+0You're looking at the video with two eyes.
- johnnynapalm, on 02/11/2008, -1/+5You're a moron.
- iofthestorm, on 02/11/2008, -6/+1Err, I dugg you up accidentally but meant to bury you, it will look better in real life than with the camera because the whole idea of the thing relies of stereo vision.
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6Don't digg down Powerjq...Powerjq is TOTALLY CORRECT! I've installed Johnny Lee's software, put IR LED's in a pair of Craftsman Safety glasses, and paired up the wiimote via bluetooth. When you do this, you'll be underwhelmed by the illusion because you're using both of your eyes. Don't get me wrong, it's cool, but the targets don't "jump out" like they do on the video. Once you close one eye, your depth perception (or lack of) will convince your brain that it is 3D space.
Caltrop: the camera lens and camera are "the eyes" in this case because the wiimote is tracking the camera and not you as you sit in your office/dorm room while watching youtube (that would be quite the technological feat!)
In order to use your stereoscopic vision and get the cool 3D one eye effect, you'll need special 3D polarizing glasses that are synced with your monitor's refresh rate: one lense will go opaque while the other lets light in (IIRC, so with 60 hz, each lens would flash 30 times per second. This will probably cause headaches. A 120hz monitor would be best because you could get 60hz out of each eye).
- iericg, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7So if I close one eye will it look better?
- daok, on 02/11/2008, -4/+3The article have about the same amount of words of this comment... only added old video with 2 lines of text...
- Renfer, on 02/11/2008, -1/+16that would be so much fun if i was high
- Ki77erB, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3isn't everything?
- Spikeli27, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4awesome
- Digisphere, on 02/11/2008, -1/+22I would so want to skip 10 years in the future right now
- jdavid, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1why not use a webcamp to position the screen? ..., and when the algorithm fails (because we know it will) the screen will float back to a "default center location," until it gracefully syncs back up with the user's head and shoulders.
- frazw, on 02/11/2008, -0/+11I can only say what I kept repeating as I watched that.
"That is f*cking cool"
Apologies for the swearing.- KyleGoetz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6What swearing? I didn't see any swear*ng.
- Sp4rker, on 02/13/2008, -0/+1no need to apologize.
- dgtljunglist, on 02/11/2008, -7/+6No, it's not a great idea.
Video games: yes. UI: no.- gandhii, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3which would make it a great idea.. It doesn't have cure aids and defeat the laws of gravity to be considered a good idea.
- sybesis, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1agreed ...totally useless and impractical..as far as i love eye candy, things need to be usefull,... 3d desktop? aren't actually that usefull...
layered workspace or even layered file navigation would be fun to look at and usefull at the same time...
wouldn't it be great to browse your desktop just like google map?
- ontain, on 02/11/2008, -2/+4why would you want to have to physically move a lot to browse tabs, screens, and files? seems like a waste of time and effort.
- monospaced, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Turning your head is natural, and is not considered a lot of movement. A lot better than waving your hands in the air.
- ontain, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1if i turn my head i wouldn't be be able to read the screen anymore. at least not well. and when i turned a back around the item wanted to look at would be off the screen.
- b33tr00t, on 06/02/2008, -0/+0@ontain - Come on man, this guys just experimenting with some cool new ways of interacting with the computer. It`s really what happens when this sort of stuff gets the attention of the community and they start tweaking and turning it in to something really cool. Every project has to start somewhere and if everyone thought like you, nothing would get done. They all start with sometimes stupid looking ideas!
The more diggs the better in my opinion
- monospaced, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Turning your head is natural, and is not considered a lot of movement. A lot better than waving your hands in the air.
- xdevit, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6Wouldn't it work work better to just make a glove with smt ir leds ? Then maybe contacts for like pinching... The possibilities are endless.
Well I'm off to go by myself a Wii remote.
Edit: :) .. http://labs.cynergysystems.com/Flash.html- aladrin, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Kickass link. He even gives credit to Johnny.
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Yes and no. The problem is that the Wiimote tracks the IR when the IR LED is on. That means that in some situations, you do not want the IR LED on. Therefore, you would need to switch the LED off or on. That might not be comfortable/usable in a glove form factor. That's why using a reflective surface is easy: you just hide your reflective finger tip. Or, use a pen with momentary switches.
Actually...here's a thought I just had...... If you can limit the LED somehow (I'm thinking narrow dog collar-cone-esque thing around the LED) to a narrow path, then you could leave the IR LED's on, and only move your finger away from the Wiimote's camera...hmmmmmm...I've gotten these things to work, but the reflective IR has been some trouble...thanks for inspiring this idea! Now I'm off to try it out...
- bmorlok, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4This was awesome. Unfortunately it would not work for non-split-screen multiplayer games, but I definately want to see an FPS use this technology.
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Your use of double negatives confuses me. Maybe this will help...
A wiimote can track four points, and so if you had two IR safety glasses, then yes, it could work. In fact, there are some screens being developed now that two people can view the same screen, but with special glasses, could view entirely separate images (plus, you would need the software to sync up with this). Even with a split screen, you could have two wiimotes (to increase the already limiting 45 degree field of view that a wiimote can detect the sensor bar/IR LEDs) that track two heads, one on the left and one on the right. With one wiimote, the two might be too close for comfort. - BHRecon, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1ummm TrackIR has been out seemingly forever and theres plenty of games fps or otherwise that use it on the PC

- CCmachined, on 02/11/2008, -2/+1except where are we gonna get a Wii?
can't you use something else?- Tahiri, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4You don't need a Wii, just the controller.
- monospaced, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1RTFA! You may use any infrared camera with motion/position sensors, as he CLEARLY states in the video and article. He uses the Wii remote because it's all set up for him already.
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1and it's pretty cheap and portable.
- bitterbug, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Last week the same technique was demonstrated on the PS3 as well:
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/01/developer-make ...
Tactical FPS games are going to go to a whole new dimension with this. Hell, now it might be possible for someone to create a kick ass first person sword fighting (or light saber) game that would blow away anything you could do with just the wiimote by itself..- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Heck, when playing COD4 on the 360, I'm standing up and moving with the game (yea, it's silly, but it's fun). Head tracking would definitely add to my game experience!
- CharlesSaint, on 02/12/2008, -1/+1Hey man, I've seen a good number of your comments as of late and have enjoyed your contributions. So if you don't mind, I've added you as a friend.

- pyrates, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1Are they going to get the thing to a 1.0 ever? I'd like to see that.
- sholt, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1I can't see this ever being practical for desktop computer use. That said, I hope this generates interest/lowers the development cost for less-traditional UIs where parallax may actually be a concern... say a head tracking HUD in your car.
- Samurailink3, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Oh my god... sign me up right now.

- xaeon, on 02/11/2008, -3/+7Anyone else really excited about the prospect of 3D porn?
Just me then?- inksmithy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0Ok what you need is this technology, married up to http://microscent.net/Apps.html and http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5583478.html.
If you get your groceries delivered, you would never leave the house again.
God, imagine the money whoever invents this is going to make!

- jeriqo, on 02/11/2008, -6/+3I do not see any link to compiz.
This is a stupid idea, who is going to use a wiimote to control a computer.... please come back to real life.- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I've done it...kinda fun! It, like the wii itself, is kinda tiring though, but you get used to it.
- inksmithy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0You mean you get fitter?
heh.
- inksmithy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0You mean you get fitter?
- DarkN00b, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1I use a Wiimote to control Rhythmbox at home and that's without IR. So I guess I would use a Wiimote to control a computer.
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I've done it...kinda fun! It, like the wii itself, is kinda tiring though, but you get used to it.
- yagidem, on 02/11/2008, -6/+2Damn, bury for spam OR inaccuracy? Hard choice!
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Yea, it does seem sketchy. It looks like they're trying to capitalize on Johnny Lee's project. I think they should have given him more credit on their page, but then again, I don't see any advertisements either....but it is their company/community page. It just seems they're pushing something...hmmmmm....
- atbnet, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1While this is more for games I understand, it could be practical as a desktop environment. Imagine those targets more of different applications so that you can have a better overview of the desktop rather than using the taskbar. This would only be practical however in very large displays such as TVs. But I like these ideas, even if not practical at first can be innovated upon to create an awesome way to interact with your computer.
- cjh79, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Honestly, sitting here at my ~14" laptop screen, I could see it being very useful even here. It would effectively increase your workspace by an order or magnitude by making it easy and intuitive to hide things that you aren't focusing on at the moment.
I've always wished I could have an unlimited workspace size (ok, constrained by resources, but theoretically unlimited), where you can navigate through the workspace, zoom in, zoom out, etc. to find whatever window you are looking for. Technology like this would make it easy enough for the average user to figure out and get used to such a setup without requiring memorization of a bunch of hotkeys or mouse gestures or whatever.

- socomoddjob, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2i cant wait until ubuntu 14.8 (lippy lizard) so i can move the wobbly windows around with my fingers.....
- bobbob1016, on 02/11/2008, -3/+2Must... correct... grammar...
A POST, you only use AN when the next word starts with a vowel, AN INTERESTING POST would work, but it is A POST. Unless it is a silent H, as in honest, then it'd be AN HONEST, and if U sounds like you, or O like won, you would then use A, as in A UNION, or A ONE-LEGGED MAN (I got that one from http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/esl/esliart ...
A 3D interface would pwn big time. One step behind Johnny Mnemonic though, since he had gloves... how long until this is in a NES Power Glove? I hope they give you the option to use the Black glasses, like the ones you get at Disney rides, those are better than Red/Blue in my opinion.- MindTrigger, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Ever hear of typos? I made this exact typo (a / an) in a post today and when I caught it, I was already out of edit time. Also, people tend to ignore grammar on informal message boards, chat, IMs, texting and other internet communications. It's more about getting your point across. Obviously the worse your writting is, the less people will bother taking you seriously. If you plan to be personally offended by bad grammar on the internet, you might as well disconnect now and sell your computer.
- bobbob1016, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1My bad, I read the summary wrong, I thought it meant 3D as in Red/Blue, not 3D as shown in the video.
- OmegaNine, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1No glasses needed.
- inksmithy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0Ok, while you might be correct to state parent used incorrect grammer, in your next paragraph you incorrectly used an ellipses paired with a sentence starting without a capital letter. In addition, you capitalised the names of three different colours. But they are nouns you say? You are partially correct. You capitalise proper nouns, but you do not capitalise common nouns. So you would capitalise "Bruce" or "Ford Falcon" but not "red", "yellow" or "blue".
I guess what I'm really saying here is that if you are going to pick on someone's grammar or spelling on the internet, you had better make sure that your grammar is absolutely correct.
Also, wtf is pwn?
Yes, that sentence should read "WTF is pwn?"
- OropheR, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Brilliant. He should get a patent for his idea.
- knowitman, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1It's been done before.
- motters, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4This kind of feature would be a "killer app" for GNU/Linux. As far as I know Microsoft have no plans for anything like this on Windows, but it seems likely that this sort of visualization will appear on the next generation of games consoles.
- benow, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1the naturalpoint trackir does something similar but with 6 DOF.

- graemee, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1That's amazing.
- maggot4life, on 02/11/2008, -11/+1As cool as that was, that guy is a *****.
- popophobia, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Now I wonder if they make IR reflective contact lens... Much easier tracking your eyes than your head. This guy is amazing. I don't know what maggot is saying
- zhepp, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2and your a windows fanboy i guess?
- ThatsNotPudding, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4What a great presentation! So many of these demos are ruined by a guy so nervous and stammering out "uh" every third word, it's like nails on a chalkboard. This presenter was so comfortable on camera, I suspect he may have even kissed a girl before.
- SQLserver, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Amazing!
These might be A stupid question but can this work with a normal display?
This pwns that silly Anaglaph Compiz Plugin we saw a while back.- g2g079, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1yes normal display and the analglyph plugin did have a couple advantages over this: 1) Both eyes weren't viewing the same image 2) more than 1 person were able to see the effect without having to follow the person with the red lights around.
- Hodoufo, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0ooooooooooold.
- exProphecy, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Using Johnny Lee as a host of this video was a great surprise..
- JesseJ, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1..and the best part ..this is all available now, for like $20, the prize of 2 infrared LEDs...
- g2g079, on 02/11/2008, -2/+1Cool idea, but I see two problems: First multiples controllers would not be possible without split screen view since what is displayed on the screen depends on where the person is and it would not beable to diplay multiple views at once. Second it wouldn't be quite true 3d since both of yours eyes will be viewing the same image.
With that said, If you mixed this with one of the new true 3d monitors coming out http://iz3d.com/t-22monitor.aspx or a 3d polarizing imax screen, we could have 3d like never before seen. It would not only come out your face, but there wouldn't have to be a set focus point. It wouldbe able to automatically adjust focus depend on where you look.
I think this is a leep in the right direction but not quite what games need. But perfect for a linux distro like Ubuntu. - klethron, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Oh man, I smell a PowerGlove 2 coming down the line.
