- almighty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15FInally I can put my 4 pieces of junk together to make one BIG pile of junk.
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There is a group in Berkeley doing just this with Parallel Knoppix:
http://www.accrc.org/
From their website:
We will be operating an e-waste collection event at MAKE Magazine's Maker Faire in San Mateo, California, on April 22-23. Stop by and help us build a parallel computing cluster, powered by our veggie-oil-generator, using Linux and the recycled hardware that people bring to us.
Here is the Digg story on their supercomputer cluster:
http://digg.com/hardware/Super_Computer_Made_of_Junk_Assimilates_Any_PC - hkfczrqj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It seems that people forgot about ClusterKnoppix (http://clusterknoppix.sw.be/) or Quantian (http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/quantian.html). There were playing in this field since ~2003.
Digg because it is still good to see people modding knoppix :P - phore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Cool stuff! Now all i need is something that needs lots of processing power and I'm set.
- namwodahs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@tylerni7:
VA Tech actually has quite a nice OS X supercomputer, made top 10 in the world: http://www.tcf.vt.edu/systemX.html - tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ok genius, what operating system do you suggest for running a cluster? You can bash Linux all you want, but when was the last time you saw a supercomputer running Windows or OSX?
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No, but you can get it to run through several Folding@Home Units simultaneously.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm amazed this hasn't been submitted before, it's been around for ages..
Hmm, since I don't really have enough computers around to make it worth while doing (Only 3 PCs at home that would run this, others are a mac, and wont boot of a CD as their so old), so I can't check this, but :
What is the average network usage while doing an average cluster job? (in average kb/s)
Wonder if it's possible to get this to work over the internet... Digg-cluster? Okay, I doubt that'd work somehow.. (And the ParralelKnoppix distro is extremely insecure, so it'd be a bad idea)
- Ben - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Imagine a beuwolf of these.... oh... nevermind.
- Sofa_King_Jank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd be interested in knowing about projects or ideas using ParallelKnoppix. The concept sounds really cool to try yet I am not sure what I'd do with it after the test.
- Wireddd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah I would like one for video transcoding too. I have setup a cluster to transcode before but I could never get it to work quite right
- dwoloz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Rendering applications such as PovRay have threaded operations as well as some video renderers and oter applications
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Gives me another excuse to start playing with linux.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You can use the school/library as a large super computer! Nice!
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Anyone have a pre-made video trans-coding cluster live CD?
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How much supercomputing do you think gets done on Windows? All the big players use Unix variants, of which Linux is one. Hell, even Mac OSX is a unix variant at its core. Granted, there are certain things that tend to happen a tiny bit faster in windows, but most are quite a bit more efficient in Linux if you take the time to learn the system.
For example, even something as simple as replacing all zeros with ones in a text file -- In Windows, you open your editor, open the file, hit Ctrl R, then press 1, tab, 0, tab, tab, space. (usually)
In linux, you type "sed -i 's/0/1/g' filename"
different people think different versions are quicker, but anyone who has used the CLI for any amount of time knows the real answer. - bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly.
Really, what's the difference between this and Clusterknoppix?
I just want to see one that you can easily install. Like this or Clusterknoppix, but permanently on the hard drives. - downeym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am curious. What kind of software can actually take advantage of this? Things like Seti at home I can see, but why would the average user want to set up a cluster other than just to see if he can...
- TinMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Saw this on /. this morning.
- untoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i see this as about the only ap (the killer ap) that i would use this for....
- wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're in luck...
"mpich.tar.gz is included in the Examples directory. This shows how to compile and install software on a running cluster, and lets you run a very cool parallel Mandelbrot set plotter " - Vulturejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check out dynebolic at http://dynebolic.org/ it uses openmosix for automatic clustering, and has all sorts of video and other media stuff.
- hypershadow147, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Also with the "takes too long to do simple operations", if you know how to use a command line, it can be quicker than, say, windows, and generally it is a bit geekier, because it's usually the geeks who are doing massivley parallel clustering projects
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, the section with "users clusters" is really interesting. This one guy made a cluster out of two laptops that you can wear around your waist.
- Specter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i've always wanted a cluster... this makes it so easy... just great
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2sounds pretty cool. will have to try it some time.
- wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ah, you beat me to it
- Upriverpaddler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Can I get it to run thru a Folding@Home work unit in record time?
- ChrisGranger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Great, now all I need is that "room full of machines"... Any donors? :)
- callumj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I would like to seem some fractals going.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10Hippies.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i know someone who that kind of thing with old GT (georgia tech) computers that they dont want anymore. but i dont know what he uses
- Lowry, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9Any bets on if this makes front page?
Submitted by Mr.NinetyEightPercent himself. ;)
Cool article++ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6you're a homogeneous
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3You know how I know you're a homogeneous? You like Coldplay....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1to bad knoppix is like soooo broken its not funny
IF i were you i would use gentoo to do this. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2Linux totally blows... Needs a lot more work if you ask me. It just takes too long sometimes to do simple operations that would take no time on other OSes... Anyone who disagrees are just "true" geeks because you think it's cool to type a lot.
