- ha1f, on 01/18/2008, -1/+40WTF... This feeling... I'm... I'm actually _happy_ that I own a PS3...
*****' sweet. - terencec, on 01/18/2008, -1/+36PS3 firmware is untouched if you install linux, no matter how badly you screw up the PS3 will always be a PS3
- theblackgecko, on 01/18/2008, -1/+30A Linux install won't brick a PS3, as one can always force a boot into the XMB by holding the power button.
- schestowitz, on 01/18/2008, -7/+27Wow. This is brilliant. FTA:
"A modification of open source software Freevo, Megabox brings VOIP, P2P, Firefox, 3D Linux gaming, TV recording (not sure how on this one), and emulation—as well as plenty of other features. Essentially, it's Linux without the install, reskinned with a neat media center interface. The price is right (free) so we'll give this a try and tell you what we think."
That could bring Linux to many more millions. - saggygrandma, on 01/18/2008, -1/+17Doesn't currently support HDMI, once thats sorted im in!
- zerobackup, on 01/18/2008, -9/+24Great looking soft-mod that doesn't actually change the way your PS3 functions as a gaming machine. I have been reluctant to do any Linux installs on my PS3 for fear of bricking it, but this mod runs off a DVD or USB drive.
- halfgook, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13i don't own a ps3 but i think this is very cool.
- smacksaw, on 01/18/2008, -2/+12Ah yes, the old answer to a question that (hardly) nobody asked: "What other way can I put linux on my PS3 that isn't as good as a direct install?"
I have Kubuntu on mine. It's perfectly safe. My partition is safe. I can do whatever I want with Kubuntu and it runs perfectly. Best of all, there's no sacrifice in functionality.
Now if someone made a hack that would boot directly to an external drive and linux had direct control over all of the hardware I would be impressed, but it doesn't seem like their goal is anything but a few stripped down features and a simple interface. - SOS84, on 01/18/2008, -0/+9Wow, I just found another reason to buy a PS3. Now I just need a real TV to make it worth while. When do I get my tax return?
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6I didn't notice that in the article, thanks for pointing that out and saving me a download.
- sint4x, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Me too, now I dont need a media center. I have one that plays games.
- johnhummel, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5I could be wrong, but my understanding is that you could:
1. Do a "system backup" - this gets the PS3 to back up your data/saves/etc to an external hard drive
2. Then do a system format/repartition
3. Restore from backup
The other method would be just to wipe it, then redownload the games - my understanding is that just because you delete the game from your PS3, you don't have to buy it again - just redownload it.
Of course, if I have erred, let me know - double check. I think that gaygamer.net had an ongoing series of one of their editors doing the Linux thing, so there may be some notes there. - smacksaw, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Kubuntu supports it. I am enjoying full HD 1920x1080 glory right now as we speak.
Takes an hour to install it from the command-based setup and it's golden from there on out. - JamesMorris, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3How do you remove a linux partition on ps3 with out reformatting, (i don't want to lose the demos i've downloaded and the games and addons i've paid for)
- lovekudu, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2'3D Linux gaming'
Last I heard the PS3 had no 3D drivers, even on its official distro. Has this changed? - PirateFSM, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2more stuff like this please!
- JamesMorris, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2Used the 5 downloads though by sharing the games i bought with friends so if i formatted would have to repay again :( I'll have a look into system backup thanks alot :)
- HeyArnold, on 01/18/2008, -2/+4could this be... the next gen version of XBMC ive been waiting for??
No wait still cant run games off the HD.
Great work though. - SnowBladerX, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2It might be, because I cant get it to work :S. Tried booting it from CDRW and DVD even copied the OS files to a external usb hard drive
- biggrz, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3This is still an early beta, and not all of thier claims are actually working yet...
- r3zonance, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2System Backup won't backup your PS/PS2 Memory Cards.
- didymus, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1couldn't get it to work..... maybe one day this will be as good as xbmc.... fingers crossed.
anyone find it ironic that the most useful thing on the xbox is illegal??? - snerfu, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1It wasn't clear from the article, but I am assuming that they have the sixaxis controller set up to navigate the freevo menu's? This was something I had trouble setting up on my ubuntu installation on the ps3, and we don't want to have to have a keyboard plugged in every time we want to use it. Since it doesn't work over HDMI, I guess it works via the component cable or do we need the RCA cable? I'll probably give it a try out, but it would be nice to figure those out before getting started.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Their goal is doing all they can under the watch of the damn hypervisor. So far this doesn't include access to HDMI or direct access to the RSX chip. The video is stuck in framebuffer mode and until someone cracks the PS3 firmware (unlikely) this will not change.
- myusrnm, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1But you can press triangle anid select "copy" and put them on your usb drive individually if needed.
- jellygraph, on 01/21/2008, -1/+1Once I see an actual practical use for having linux installed on a PS3 or any other console, rather than a laptop, let me know. A media centre would be nice, but then you might as well get a proper one, which can capture your cable tv. Homebrew games, sure, thats cool, but very few of them ever become good completed games. Emulation, ya, that's probably the selling ticket, buuuut its not a reason for me to get a PS3, since I can play those on a whole range of things now anyhow
Suggestions please? - CrossCrucial, on 01/20/2008, -0/+0and the only reason why I still have two hooked up. So old yet never over-heated...hmmm I almost don't believe they were made by M$
- vman81, on 01/18/2008, -3/+2sounds like vapourware, anyone tried it?
- CrossCrucial, on 01/20/2008, -1/+0and for the first time, I'm actually dissapointed that I don't =(
*****' bummer. - thespanielator, on 01/18/2008, -3/+1FTFA:
"Reproduction of all the habitual formats"
that's way better than the Sony marketing hype - SSCrow, on 01/18/2008, -6/+3I love how 'most' of the appeal of the PS3 is not about the games.
its either Linux or a Blue Ray player. - jimmyt1988, on 01/18/2008, -3/+0yeah! (Licks eye)
- jimmyt1988, on 01/18/2008, -4/+0yeah! (Licks lips)
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -6/+1ur a faget
-bigmike - r3zonance, on 01/18/2008, -7/+2Really?
I installed it on my PS3 and it was works than running Vista on a machine with 512MB RAM. - inactive, on 01/18/2008, -8/+1More non-games for the PSTRIPPLE!
- jimmyt1988, on 01/18/2008, -8/+1Shutup, fag.
- jimmyt1988, on 01/18/2008, -9/+0Linux is unstable and i dislike it intensly, All of you should go to hell. PS3 sucks ass. Hail PC. GG FTW LLLLLOLLLL
