- classhelper, on 03/21/2009, -1/+18Looking forward to giving this distro a try in Virtualbox. Thanks for the shout :).
- Nickolassc, on 03/23/2009, -0/+17Meh, OS X is nothing but a BSD with a fancy GUI.
- abudhu, on 03/23/2009, -2/+19Spelling it "Windoze" is still in fashion? Almost as bad as when people still type "M$", trying to act rebellious and cool.
- Retrospekt, on 03/23/2009, -0/+15PcLinuxOS is a perfect distro for a beginner to start tinkering with linux. It works straight out of the box, and is very very easy to use and configure. Linux for the impatient.
- choicenotchance, on 03/23/2009, -3/+18I couldn't believe how ugly the default theme was...and did you see the screenshots of the "juicy" themes? LOL! Comic Sans in the title bar? Are you KIDDING?
I won't even get started on the default KDE theme... - moo113, on 03/23/2009, -1/+15I'm actually interested in this distro now. Normally I don't give a *****, but it looks pretty slick.
- 47f0, on 03/23/2009, -0/+14Agreed. Ubuntu gets a lot of press, but there are some very nice distros out there, and PCLinuxOS is one of my favorites.
I always charge for Windows work - I figure that's in keeping with the commercial nature of Windows. But, I never charge private individuals to install or support Linux. So since I really need a minimum of support issues, lately I've been installing PCLinuxOS, with good results.
TexStar and his team have a history of maintaining an extensive, no-hassle repository, and the online community is one I have no misgivings about pointing a new Linux user at. - cornfeed, on 03/23/2009, -1/+12Yep, it's what Mandriva could have been. If they hadn't had screwed things up back when they were still Mandrake. Texstar is the DaMan
- LANjackal, on 03/22/2009, -1/+11I've used a variant of it before and it's far slicker than Ubuntu in many ways, especially when it comes to system settings.
- Josh8178, on 03/21/2009, -1/+10Wow I can't wait to give this a shot. Loved the 2006 one.
- captinherb, on 03/23/2009, -0/+9How does it compare with Linux Mint?
- greenx, on 03/21/2009, -2/+10I am downloading the ISO now to give it a run.
- ECas123, on 03/23/2009, -1/+8Yes but it's got a different logo!
- hardeep1singh, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7Read the article.
This is what it says, "I must say PCLinuxOS is on par with Ubuntu and Linux Mint, when it comes to being friendly and usable and rich." - farmerbb, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7PCLinuxOS 2k4 was the first Linux distro I've ever regularly used, and I must say, I've been really impressed with each release ever since. If you're looking for a useable Linux distro with just the right about of features, PCLinuxOS is a pretty decent choice.
- charlietuna, on 03/23/2009, -1/+8Lovely? Natelie Portman is lovely, Christelle LeFranc is lovely. A linux distro? Please ease up on the hyperbole.
- sx66gns, on 03/23/2009, -1/+7Na , This one is much closer to an issue free desktop replacement.
- hwy9nightkid, on 03/23/2009, -0/+6Ubuntu refused to load on my laptop..grabbed PClinuxOS2008 and loved it. Going to wait on this distro until I get some freetime
- Bulletbillx, on 03/23/2009, -2/+8windows will remain necessary until game developers, and some other application developers start making their software crossplatform.
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -3/+9I've used several different builds of Linux, Suse being my fav... but the one thing I hate about Linux is installing new software. On windows, downloading and installing new software is about as easy as it gets. With Linux, if it isn't on some list, it can be a pain to install. I tried several times to compile from source code, followed all kinds of how-to guides and never got ***** to work right. Once Linux makes it where installing new software is as easy as it is on Windows (without hving to use a apt-get type list), Linux will take bigger bite our of the Windows market.
Once - jamesmcm, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5Huh? It's because it is illegal to ship with these codecs in the US without paying some license fee. It is legal elsewhere in the world, so the distros just make the users install it (one click on Ubuntu) so they are free from liability. It's really easy anyway, VLC works like a charm.
- NobodyWhoCares, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5They're both pretty good "out of the box" distros. Mint I like because it has the massive Ubuntu repositories behind it. PCLinuxOS is pretty snazzy as it has some of the nice Mandriva tools (DrakConf for example), and a rolling release so no six month upgrade cycles.. install it once and you're done. I'm not too keen on KDE, but PCLinuxOS's Gnome build is pretty sharp.
Best answer is to check them out yourself with a live CD or in a VM and try it. If you don't care if one's based on Mandriva or the other Debian/Ubuntu, then it's a pretty hard tossup. See what works best with your needs and hardware. Both are pretty damn good. I use Arch myself, but if I had to choose one of these two, it would be pretty tough to call. Tried them both and liked them. - subgeniusd, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5It came from an old, popular website "pclinuxonline". After deciding to develop their own distro they just named it after the site = PCLinuxOS.
From a marketing perspective not as cool as, for instance, Zenwalk or DreamLinux but what matters is it's a stable, functional toolkit with a great community. - inactive, on 03/23/2009, -1/+5Here are some good distros:
http://www.vectorlinux.com/ - http://www.mepis.org/ - http://www.mandriva.com/ - http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/ - http://www.foresightlinux.org/ - andrewtheart, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4How does this compare to the latest version of Linux Mint though?
- MethodOne, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4Quit being a fanboy. My main distro is Arch, but I tend to try out Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS to see what's new and to help support users I installed one of them for.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Who needs the Win32 codecs? ffmpeg decodes every common audio and video format and even many uncommon formats. ffmpeg is used by VLC, Xine, MPlayer, etc.
VLC also has no problems playing DVDs as long as the CSS decryption library is installed and it usually is if VLC is installed through its own repo. - andrewtheart, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3You're asking too much of me (: But thanks.
- pedepy, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3this is the distro that got me into linux. not using it anymore, but glad to see it's doing well
- cosmicr, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3I installed Ubuntu 8.10, and it worked out of the box without any tinkering, and without any of the problems he had with PCLOS. I'm not a fanboy or anything, just sayin.
- hardeep1singh, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Can I get the same theme and wallpaper for my Ubuntu? I guess that's the only difference between them.
- jsffive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3I don't know about the DVD decryption stuff... obviously I don't use them. But I do have win32 codecs in Synaptic Package Manager.
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3What are some other great looking distros?
I heard Sabayon is one of them? - coldkill3r, on 03/22/2009, -1/+4Excellent review. I'll try it in a virtual machine now.
Torrent: http://www.linuxgator.org/PCLinuxOS/iso/pclos-gnom ... - RobotBuddha, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2I switched to debian from mandrake, then to ubuntu, a pretty long time ago. But to this day hearing texstar brings back memories of the linux community at its best.
- Justathought, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2They stuck with 3.5.10 because the PCLinuxOS developers are very strict on stability. Nevertheless, Texstar (the main dev) has stated that he is now working on KDE 4.x packages. Once they feels good about its stability it will likely show up in the repos.
- MattBD, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2@hardeep1singh
Well, it does have a different kernel (Mach) to FreeBSD but is otherwise based on FreeBSD. - hardeep1singh, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3you mean FreeBSD with a fancy UI.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 03/23/2009, -2/+4It still uses KDE 3.5? I could understand 3.5 when 4.0 or 4.1 was still the latest KDE release, but KDE 4.2.1 is the current one and it works very very nice.
- mikedoth, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3Crockett's Theme kicks ass. I loved that show.
- shinkou, on 03/23/2009, -5/+7Very cool! I'll give it a try when I get home tonight. Who's gonna need Windoze when we have so many nice and user friendly Linux distros around? Linux (and other OSS) FTW!
- Meep3D, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3Why on earth do people claim multiple Linux distros as choice? If you went in to a restaurant and all they had was 100 different types of steak pie. Sure they may all be made by different chefs but the ingredients is exactly the same. You have no true choice.
If each distro did something different and useful - ala smoothwall, DSL and maybe even gentoo.I'd see a point but having two dozen different distros with the same packages, software, looks and goal, what is the point in that? - Meep3D, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Nobody has said 'open sores' here yet. Strawman much?
- eqisow, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3While it *is* a problem, the reason is due to the nature of Linux vs Windows. Windows is a stable platform, nothing substantially changes on Windows for years at a time, and even then they make every effort at backward compatibility.
Linux distros change every few months and some even use the "rolling release" system and are changing daily. Add to that the sheer number of distros and it's impossible to make a binary installer a la Windows that works on all, or even most, distros and recent releases.
As a result, each package has to be compiled for it's platform, and even then some flags and lines may need to be changed from distro to distro.
Long story short, it's the consequence of having a choice. Pick your poison. I, personally, prefer a little make, make install every now and then.
Note: For a build system that's about as easy as it gets, check out Arch Linux. For a distro than has almost every binary package imaginable, check out Debian. - HorseloverFat8, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Mandriva 2009 with KDE is actually pretty good. Their GNOME version kind of sucks, though, and the 2008 edition was crappy.
- oobuntu, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2in Manchester there is a "curry mile" where for about 1 mile all you get are about 40 indian restaurants. good ones survive, and so do cheap ones (not necessarily good quality), others offer delivery, while some allow you to bring your own booze.
i disagree with you - i think linux distributions offer have very different goals and attract different type of user.
likewise, debian releases when they are ready and make no apologies - goals are stability and freedom
rhel/centos offer stability - RHEL goal = solid product, good brand, customers paying for support. long term support
ubuntu presents itself as an easy to use desktop distro near to the cutting edge. lots of packages
fedora aims to be a cutting edge , community driven
puppy/dsl/etc - lightweight distros for old hardware. - ukblacknight, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3Agreed, the black and white theme makes it feel soul-less IMO. I know it can be changed, but still, even Ubuntu's default theme is better than that!
- jsffive, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3I have PCLOS installed on my system with both KDE and Gnome... I have to tell you the truth, every time I try Gnome, I am just utterly UNDERWHELMED.
WHY does Gnome "look more professional" than KDE? Is there a reason for this statement? With Compiz-fusion and Emerald theme manager, I can make my desktop look however I want.
Also, if the writer is trying to show off Compiz, why does he insist on using a dark background? - secrity, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1I thing that Mint includes some multimedia stuff that PCLOS doesn't include.
- secrity, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1It is illegal to run decss code in the US. Thank the DMCA.
