- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+40No, they really need more developers making the thing work. Making it look good can be put off until it's functional.
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -11/+41The design looks slightly amateur to me.
Gradients + Shine =/= Instant sexiness. - myfanwy, on 10/17/2007, -3/+32it's open-source, go for it
- statix, on 10/10/2007, -8/+31if the iphone ever had an illegitimate child, this is what it would look like...
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -10/+31They really need to get someone better to focus on the default UI design.
- nallelcm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20!= ?
- FloppyLlamaDigg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Trick or treat!
Please tell me there are more color schemes available. - spz104, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Dyslexics will think this is the Pokemon phone
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19No missed calls, no voice messages and his friends are named Asdergh, Gioop and Tet. Is there any question this phone belongs to a Linux user?
- caLt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14OpenMoko is not the phone.. It's a free operating system for mobile devices. The hardware you see is a Neo1973 ( http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo1973 ).
The phone would rock if it had wireless networking capabilities =( - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -1/+15um. the gen2 version that comes out in october has wifi
- Beakerz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Too bad the OpenMoko project has been rolling for more than 2 years now, so that completely blows your "its an iphone rip-off" statement out of the damn water...
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/smartphones/openmoko-smartphone-did-they-have-a-time-machine-or-what-229243.php - talks about the similarities and such of iphone and Neo1973. - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Bump that to 20-something, switch photoshop with gimp and you're 100% correct.
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14I like that they're doing this, but for *****'s sake it looks like ass... (but if it uses Gtk+ (which i think it did?) then it's totally themable, and therefore excusable for the moment)
- WiseElben, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I assume it's bolded because it's the "active" number (the last one hit).
- myfanwy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10it's only a windows phone if and when it's running windows
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Or that.
- rabidmonkey1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Yes...but does it run DOOM?
- Stemp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Do you think the iPhone is made in California ?
- Stemp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Openmoko_Phone_linux_based_New_UI_Screenshots/
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9FUD. All the hardware and silicon in the phone is chosen because it has open documentation. The phone was designed from scratch for open source and hardware hacking.
- nullcodes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Why don't they use a larger font size for the number pad?
- smartalecks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10The hell? I don't think it looks that bad...

Here is a full size of one...
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9481/dialer1pq5.png - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8*none* of your money is going to Microsoft. The company who's developing the phone is FIC, they're a Taiwanese company. You've got so many of the basic facts on this screwed up it's almost funny to watch.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's skinable, nobody but OpenedHand are working on skins though because /functionality/ is much, much more important at this point.
OH mainly just removed the hilariously bad 90s-pixmaps added by the OM team. - Laiden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yes, yes it does.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I'd say that a phone should:
#1: Make calls consistently and easily.
The fact we're not over this hump yet is pretty serious. The functionality, the basic ability for you to be able to use the phone as a phone and the reason for its existence, is paramount. The fact that it already uses established theming systems and artists can be brought in at any time to restyle and fancy up the UI means the people can focus on just getting the basic phone components working first. - cwcentral, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7In the end, that's the beauty of the openmoko concept--it's open source, think the UI needs improvement, you can change it yourself!
Imagine having a set of openmoko UIs *functionally* tailored for each field: business, personal, play, etc... - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I have an iPhone too, love it to death, but there's room in the world for both.
- Dhalgren, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What's with the bold 9?
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Believe it or not, all kernel architectures were invented 20 years ago. no modern os invented a new type of kernel. It's either macro or its micro. The whole folder hierarchy thingie goes back even before unix. Ah well. Certain things are copied because they are:
1- the most obvious choice
2- -or- a randon choice and its better to play by convention
Like interfaces. You can develop this all new smart interface, but nobody will understand it.
Apple's iphone has ZERO new inventions.
Yet its quality is in the polish and the mix of ideas.
Maybe somebody you'll grow up and learn that ideas, like language can only be the product of a group rather than an individual - Skanadian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's Linux based, of course there will be colour schemes.
- braydonf, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8how it looks is part of how it functions, a lot more goes into making things look good than designing pretty icons, type, colors, etc. i ordered a openmoko phone, but they were sold out. so if they want more people to help the need to ship more. for the time being i am waiting to get one until the phaseIII. and then i want to help with the UI design... :D
- vonskippy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Could you find a cheaper web host?
- GaryS278, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7http://duggmirror.com
click the link, you'll get sent to a mirror. - awesomo4000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6the whole thing is open ... what should it look like ? (i have one .. so send some mock ups and we'll see what we can do )
- arapidsfan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yah, openmoko was announced before the iphone was.
- abid786, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Doesn't look awfully bad, but doesn't look that great either. Nothing compared to a professionally done UI (e.g. iPhone)
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't think he is making a joke. The numbers should be much bigger than they currently are.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They should install compiz-fusion on that bad boy!!!
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Actually, it was designed /solely/ to run OpenMoko. That's why it's almost always called the "Open Moko Phone" even though the real name of the phone is the Neo 1973. It doesn't have USB 2.0 because the chips they chose are rather old and don't have a USB 2.0 controller. It doesn't really /need/ one, either (it's got a MiniSD slot).
The next model will also have WiFi (chosen because it has an open driver) and a graphics core (which a driver will have to be developed for, but the OpenMoko guys assure us they have the documentation, even if there's no proof they do... it's pretty frustrating, especially when your applications depend on details). - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You'd get a mobile phone just to play doom?
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11Looks absolutely horrible to me. Bad color choice, bad font sizes, poor icons, bad spacing of UI elements. Awful.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5..and you're still a moron, because there's no working Windows on the phone at all.
Find out for yourself, it's not that hard: http://openmoko.com/ - zephc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Wacky Action Phone
- etandrib, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And people thought the iPhone's keyboard was hard to type on. Check this out: http://blog.haerwu.biz/files/2007/09/f10d5a0213cbcedfcb6bb08dae4811fa.png
- flex411, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Do you think the same guys who write the code for the IPhone are the same guys designing the pretty buttons that everyone seems to care about more than functionality? It's pre-alpha too, What did the IPhone look like pre-alpha?
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I love cut off letters, looks like ReactOS running any current Windows app.
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5The 9 sort of looks like it has elephantitis... But other than that I still maintain it looks ugly (orange is a no-go for me, including on ubuntu, i use the foresight theme, nice green)
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Got to buy em! Got to buy em!
