- amfantasy, on 10/30/2007, -7/+61you're an idiot schestowitz
- Andytom, on 10/28/2007, -4/+41It wasn't funny or clever the first time and still isn't the second. OpenSUSE (the free version of Novell SLED) is one of the most productive contributors to Linux as a whole, having given free of charge XGL and Compiz etc, and should be exempt from the ***** that is getting thrown at Novell.
- DudleyInnocent, on 10/28/2007, -1/+20Can I buy some pot from you?
- kazamx, on 10/27/2007, -1/+16If they would give Linux direct access to the GPU then this thing would REALLY take off. The XBMC guys are porting to linux at the moment. PS3 looks like the natural replacement for old xboxes. It could do everything the XBOX could, but it could also handle Blue ray discs and other HD content. It could run a full linux distro and soooooo much more.
The problem is Sony won't give us access to the GPU and thats putting ALOT of people off making the PS3 shine, - inactive, on 10/27/2007, -6/+20Interesting computer you guys at Sony have created.
- Zero456, on 10/28/2007, -1/+10Ubuntu has a specific install CD for the PS3 which you can find here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/custom/20071025-gutsy-ps ...
However, there is a different install method with instructions that is noted in the article which you can find here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=316047 - Arkz, on 10/27/2007, -0/+9..What the hell are you talking about?
- alx242, on 10/28/2007, -1/+9You haven't got a clue what you are talking about. Sony has allowed ANY distro to be installed via the tools they supply, this article concerns how to use these tools to allow the installation of openSUSE.
Your points about Sony being sued isn't relevant. There was no law-suit they simply weren't allowed to classify the PS2 as a computer in the UK.
You are being quite oblivious to the fact that the PS3 is being used as a Linux calculation server at multiple universities. They haven't pushed the PS3 as a computer to circumvent any taxes in the UK afaik and it would be completely silly to push Linux to just skip taxes in one country. - inactive, on 10/28/2007, -6/+12Tell xbox 360 to use Suse, lol
- zetsurin, on 10/28/2007, -1/+7SystemBetatester, the moment you lose your virginity you won't be so ***** wound up. Just keep waiting, it's bound to happen sooner or later.
- geartype2, on 10/28/2007, -1/+7I'm not sure what you are implying, but the box for a ps3(at least mine) does label it, and the ps2 as a computer entertainment system. So yes, very interesting indeed.
- Coldkill, on 10/27/2007, -0/+6You're a disgusting human being
- rento, on 10/28/2007, -1/+6Very interesting, I wouldn't mind an extra PC from the already yummy PS3. A lot of scope for me XD
- Stonekeeper, on 10/27/2007, -1/+6So *you're* the guy who keeps sending spam to my gmail account!!
- Mejogid, on 10/29/2007, -2/+6I agree with your spirit, but you don't have the details right. OpenSUSE isn't the free version of Novell SLED - it's merely a free distrobution guided by Novell with mostly unpaid contributers. Novell is also responsible for XGL, Compiz, many patches to the kernel, the tango icon theme, Evolution, much of Gnome and the controversial mono. I personally feel it's ridiculous, unfair and harmful to free software as a whole to penalise the many wonderful developers that Novell employs because of the twisted agender of their management.
- stmiller, on 10/28/2007, -1/+5http://www.xbox-linux.org
- dansmeek, on 10/27/2007, -4/+8while this could be dugg down for many reasons, the grammar was what put me over the top.
"better than xbox because playstation 3 does" does? it's like you were going to make a point... but stopped and just used a period instead.
PS2 also uses "many other linux OS." I have no idea what this means.
"Can Xbox360 run Windows vista, lol" This I hate. Laughing out loud. It's like a sentence, can xbox run vista, hahahaha. it's really not that funny but the lol is still there.
and finally "In the linux world you get no Viruses." aside from the fact that there are indeed linux viruses, albeit uncommon, I just want to know why Virus, in this case, was capitalized.
And, please don't take this personally tiited. I am sure you are a very intelligent person who just doesn't take grammar seriously in a comment section. - yohan, on 10/29/2007, -5/+8It's "a lot", not "alot".
- Brassbud, on 10/27/2007, -2/+5How is the virtualization support/performance under Cell?
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3You have full access of the available SPE's. As for application performance, it's the same as you'd expect for the PPE (not that great), since Linux itself doesn't use the Cell. If you want to develop for the Cell you should probably install YDL or Redhat though, since the Cell SDK doesn't install easily otherwise. Video performance is an issue as it's using a rather slow framebuffer. Aside from the hypervisor blocking access to the RSX you pretty much have access to all the hardware, though. (bluetooth, etc)
- sqrt7744, on 10/27/2007, -1/+4English is obviously not his first language, but I still managed to understand what he was saying. Please lay off the kid. I'd like to see you write *anything* in his first language, whatever that may be (maybe German because nouns are capitalized)
- Atomic1fire, on 11/03/2007, -2/+4that will never happen
microsoft created the xbox 360 - SystmBetatester, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2owned. i got quite the laugh from you deciphering what that ***** said.
- LinuxKitty, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1It is not a high price for a strong gaming system; high-end video cards for a PC are not much cheaper than that (you get PS3s for less than $600 these days -- take a look around). Running Linux on it is just a gimmick, but a nifty one.
- BabyWookie, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1So, what's the best distro to run on the PS3? I tried to do some research and from what I gathered, Yellow Dog is still tops, because it's the most customized to the PS3 hardware. Is this correct? Also, I read somewhere that Windows can be installed as well. Any truth to that?
I wish the PS3 has a unified memory architecture like the 360 does. 256 MB is not much to play around with. BTW, you can run game console emulators in PS3 Linux, right? Do the 16-bit system emus run alright? Thanks. - ubergeek09, on 10/29/2007, -2/+3I don't understand why you want to spend $600 on a PS3..
- stephdau, on 10/27/2007, -0/+1I don't mean to lauch a distro flamewar, but you could also consider running YDL, which Sony is officially contracting to build for the PS3's cell processor.
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/
If nothing else, you'd actually be running a fully supported distribution.
Check it out, they even have a PS3 cluster solution (scientific market): http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/store/index.php? ... - stmiller, on 10/27/2007, -0/+1The issue is that it's PowerPC. So there is no virtualization for x86 operating systems. Only emulation with qemu for x86 which is horrible slow for doing something like this.
You could possible use a powerpc port of xen for other powerpc operating systems (maybe). - DarkDx, on 10/28/2007, -2/+3So, just because *supossedly* they wanted to skip some taxes, how does it affects you? You aren.t buying one because of that? If youre going to troll at least do it good. dumbass,
- jkoski, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1When Linux lovers and Sony haters collide...
It sounds interesting but I'm not sure there's a compelling enough reason to try this. I mean, I have a computer already and I use TVersity (which is great!) as a media server so other that the 'cool' factor, what else could I do with it? - inactive, on 10/28/2007, -1/+2There's no Compiz fusion because there's no access to the RSX. As for why this is, it may have more to do in fact with nVidia than with Sony. nVidia of course has been pretty reticent with open driver support for their PC hardware.
- djauto23, on 10/27/2007, -0/+1Please don't forget capitals. Always.
- joltjake, on 10/28/2007, -1/+2why? "it can't utilize all of the power" apparently....
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -1/+1http://psubuntu.com
- Desimat0r, on 10/27/2007, -1/+1@imneveral0ne: you are useless.
- wpgowns, on 03/22/2008, -0/+0if you install vista on a ps3, could you play some 'games for windows' that are exclusive to pc and 360?
- swedishfriend, on 10/28/2007, -0/+0I agree it is just a gimmick until the graphics processor is opened up for linux development.
- swedishfriend, on 10/28/2007, -0/+0Don't you mean $399. That is how much they cost with a hard drive, blu-ray, hdmi and a wireless controller.
- TechCF, on 10/27/2007, -3/+2To little ram though.. have to add swap partitions on expensive superfast memory cards
- thecheatah, on 10/29/2007, -9/+8Thats really nice of them. I wish someone would post some instructions for installing ubuntu. I don't discriminate against any distros. (No one should, the end product is the same) Its just that I am used to the setup of ubuntu and know where which files are located and stuff like that.
- burty89, on 10/27/2007, -4/+3noun is sarcasm?
- thecheatah, on 10/27/2007, -4/+2They have a link at the bottom of the article. OOPS!
- imneveral0ne, on 10/29/2007, -5/+3ur spellchecker catch that for you? what a useless comment
- Stonekeeper, on 10/27/2007, -6/+3And I think you missed noun's sarcasm.
- Septimus, on 10/27/2007, -4/+1When are you going to suicide bomb Redmond?
- ProKid, on 10/29/2007, -16/+11What they lack in games they make up with features
- TheJokerV, on 10/28/2007, -7/+1Tell me when its possible to play copied games on the system and then we'll talk.
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -7/+1Learn from that, nintendo. I want linux on the wii :(
- SystmBetatester, on 10/28/2007, -9/+2there is none, sony wont allow it.
- Kcaj, on 10/29/2007, -15/+1Well I got Sonic and Knuckles to work now, so I'm just going to go play that. Also after I installed the update, I can't connect to game servers. I upgraded from RedHat 5.6 to the next version, OpenSUSE PS3. Plus like, I got Sim City to work, but I had to keep the lid open and hold down the button so it thought I had closed the lid, and then it readthe disc right. I dunno, I'm going to hook up a few more batteries and transistors soon and see if I can't get GTA IV working again. It was working fine with the original version of my PS3, but as soon as I started installing all these different kinds of lunixes, man :(
