- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is a great way to introduce someone to Ubuntu and Linux, assuming their system has enough ram to support a VM.
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Absolutely.
Hey n00b question... what's the default login and password for this disk image of Ubuntu Server? - beeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The credentials are ubuntu/ubuntu... :)
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thanks! Jeez, the ONLY obvious one I didn't try. Heh.
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Absolutely.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I get my images from ThoughtPolice. Super fast torrents
http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/vmware/
I'm actually testing out Fedora Core 6 Test 3 right now- Sparticuz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's a cool site, but it would be better if it had more variety of Linux distros.
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have picked up a few VMs from them, but they do need more varietty.
- Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The linked mirror let me download at 1225KB/s, the max my cable can do.. Just FYI
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -27/+6lol i thought it was screen shots, not disc images
- GUESShimself, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27hence your user name?
- Everen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Sorry for the whining, but would someone happen to have a decent mirror? Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful that these are provided. It's just that the 8K/sec is killing me-- and I can't use BitTorrent here at work, where the VM would be used.
Thanks.- codemeister, on 11/06/2007, -12/+2I'm getting about 150KB/s from the site.
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4You're not whinning at all, I have the same issue here! The big company I work for won't allow Linux boxes, but I am allowed to install whatever on my laptop; having Ubuntu within a VMware to demo what I can do would rock. At home I'll even boot the live 6.06 cd an run it on this top; love it!
- IronJeff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Any plans to release Parallels disk images?
- deepdish, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I would be interested in a virtual disk image of Ubuntu to run on my Intel mac via Parallels too.
- wfmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There are lots more Virtual Appliances to be found here:
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/community.html - monkeywizard, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3What sucks is you can't run VMWare player inside VMWare player. WTF.
But anyway, for those that want to use VMWare player to create virtual machines, check this out:
http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2005/11/07/vmware-player-ubuntu-installation.html
Of course, that's for WinXP, but it can be modified to fit around linux as well. Makes it so you don't have to find a warez copy of VMWare (although, I do prefer the full blown, but for those who feel like some sort of sinner... here's your ticket)- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Wouldn't that be like crossing the streams?
- monkeywizard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Ah nm, that link was for the ubuntu version!
(I really hate how you have limited time to edit posts on here.) - mdmadph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5damn -- I had always wanted to do that. I wanted to see how far deep it could go...
- Makurosu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was about to post that link, monkeywizard. Thanks. I use VMPlayer, Qemu, and a variant of those instructions all the time to test out various Linux distros. It's nice to be able to download a pre-made VM, but sometimes you can't find the exact configuration you want, and it's really easy just to make your own.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can't you use a vm made in VMWare Server in Player? Server is free.
- hgcphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why not give VMWare server a spin ?
I listed a couple of things that I like about it
http://hamisageek.blogspot.com/2006/08/virtualize-and-be-productive.html
http://hamisageek.blogspot.com/2006/09/5th-reason-for-virtualization.html - Makurosu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't realize VMWare Server is now free. I'll give it a try. That's interesting about the Remote Access feature. I did a workaround with VNC to be able to do that in VMWare Player. Thanks for the tip!
- monkeywizard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How the hell do I get marked down for posting an informative tip?
People on digg are insane.
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tend to use VMware to test installation procedures, not just the system itself. I also like the control of adding what I want instead of using a pre-built image.
- mike503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i just made my own vmware install of ubuntu last week. oh well :)
luckily i can't say "i wasted my time" since the install process is too easy to be mad about. but kudos to anyone for pushing open source software out there and making it easier for those nervous to try it out.- renrutal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same here! Actually it was almost one month ago, but I was also looking for these images first.
My first try at vmware was an old hoary live cd I had around... unhappily I failed booting it after it was updated to dapper. Later it was a Debian-CCD BR, which failed too, dunno why. Third, a dapper desktop live cd, which unhappily didn't support the vmware video driver here, and I couldn't get it to boot to console mode.
Luckily I had a newly released Gentoo Linux 2006.1 LiveDVD downloaded. After giving it the nox boot option, updating the installer its updater tool and using only GRP/networkless packages, it worked really fine, no compilation needed.
- renrutal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same here! Actually it was almost one month ago, but I was also looking for these images first.
- jordantbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5what is the login for these ubuntu images? I downloaded the Ubuntu Server, but I have no idea what users they have setup.
- nchernick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ubuntu
for the desktop version, not sure about the server. Give it a try - monkeywizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I can't get in either.
"ubuntu" doesn't work for a username.
This info isn't obvious on their site anywhere either... haven't found it after 5 minutes of looking. - monkeywizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Musta spelled it wrong originally.
u: ubuntu
p: ubuntu
..that worked.
- nchernick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ubuntu
- moonwell, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Because too much work to install an ubuntu in vmware, isn't it? ***** this spam.
- malice8691, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4This is old news isn't it?
- computerdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is from a while back, but I've tried it on a couple of different distros and they work just fine (using live-cds, but you can install from them into the VM environment). Easyvmx allows yout to create your own VMWare appliance; it takes a little bit of trial and error to get all your settings just right, and after installing VMWare Player I disabled all the network connections it creates without any problems.
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Running_any_Linux_in_Windows_without_a_CD-ROM_(for_free) - opensourcepro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you mark Shuttleworth for giving the world Ubuntu!
http://eefoof.com/image/13920 - mariuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now there is edgy vmwareimages (6.10) uploaded for all ubuntu variants
- sebarod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody knows the root password for the desktop version?
- sebarod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry for the question I did not get the sudo thing in ubuntu. :)
- gxb2089, on 11/06/2007, -1/+1gents I'm a bit new to ubuntu, but what is the root password? i do an su and and then what? "ubuntu" does not work
thanks - ArmyOfOrr42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The root password is "ubuntu". got it on the third guess :)
- hoonsuk, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Thanks! I needed it to install updates. :-)
- williscool, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1My first digg :) This will be great for better knowing Linux like I've been wanting to for a while. Now I just wish I had thought of this first and hadn't made / wasn't afraid to get rid of that Linux partition on my other hard drive x.x
