- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38I support Compiz+Beryl merger, because their goals are similar, and there is a lot of duplication in effort.
KDE and GNOME are significantly different products, and I think it's important that they remain separate. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Excellent! So there's no MIT and GPL collision in licensing after all. With two strands of work, there's more room for exploration of different routes (like GNOME and KDE), which is where better products and innovation stems from. It's evolutionary (better solutions survive). Just like Apple has shown with its Darwin-powered OS X, which saved them from what appeared like a dead end.
- LiquidRain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Congrats to both teams. I have my quarrels with both Beryl and Compiz, and I have high hopes (as a user) that the merger will result in there being a single, better piece of software. I think this is going to benefit the community greatly in other ways as well - such as KDE/GNOME only having to talk to one project in order to get decorations/themes/whatever compatible with Compiz.
- chaddhall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17So what your saying is that the developers have stopped forking around and are going to fork off less while getting some work done on the new project. Right?
- lukee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19that... was brutal.
- deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15I have to admit, I can beryly believe it.. I'm compizly amazed!!
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@hobnob: That he spent $300 on windows...?
- hobnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8what are you getting at
- goodbeershow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hooray! (blow a party favor horn)
Now if they can keep it from crashing all the time. Looks fantastic though. - lispy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well. I am glad to see this happening. OTOH chapeau to Quinn and the fork. They made the point clear: We want a sexy desktop now! With both projects merging again this might result in the best of both worlds. Looking forward to it. Pity it couldn't make it into feisty, but hey, "greedy goose" is just around the corner.
- Justinpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I am glad to see this happen. Looks like a step forward and as always, a few steps from windows.
- betacmag4u, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I used Window Vista today for the first time. Ultimate edition. I had only seen the xgl/compwiz/beryl demo videos on Youtube and expected Vista Ultimate to be just like that .......wow was I surprised.
- Anonymous3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, there is the Portland project that has input from the kde and gnome groups and others to make some sort of standard...
- Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This should be good. I'm glad they are still keeping it a bit separate though.

- d3dm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Khronos Group (www.khronos.org) has recently created a working group for a low-level window composition API that will probably sit on top of OpenGL/OpenVG.
Does anyone know if the Compiz/Beryl folks are involved with this? - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Your comment is a bit silly. Would Ford, Honda, Toyota & Kia need to merge to all for a more unified driving experience?
- KevinJim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I pray for the new project to work without problems on KDE via AIGLX. I had a "no window limit" problem on my KDE :(
- b05q, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4From using Compiz and then Beryl for over 6 months on a Edgy Eft install I have to say when i have to use windows it seems so . . . . stale.
- stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Congratulations, you won a ticket to my block list!

- Pow3rbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome! I couldn't decide on which one, so Now I don't have to! :D
- bllambert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the name Compiz is terrible. I am glad for the merge, but a new name is necessary.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mobilehavoc: You can tweak beryl to be as intrusive or subtle as you want. Try that with OSX or Vista. I personally think OSX and Vista type visualizations could have been done a bit better but that's my opinion... with beryl, it doesn't have to stop at the defaults. There are some powerful features in beryl that can't be found in the other OSs.
- Jonty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GPLed code cannot be relicensed under MIT, however MIT code can be relicensed under the GPL.
- droversoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL @ Digg community
- Peepsalot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand why there is no licensing issues? I thought this was a major issue that Beryl code cannot be merged back into Compiz. Can anyone explain?
- jambarama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This move does make me a bit concerned. I have an unsupported video card, so I use the DRI-Vesa drivers. Beryl in CVS has always worked just fine with my setup. I only got compiz, though cvs, to work only once until the next update hosed it. When I did, compiz seemed to run *a lot* slower.
I'm sure the slowness was just different features enabled by default--since the code is 90%+ the same--but all the same I'm worried about the compatibility with my system. Will the merger (and an update post-merger) break my DE? Anyone else have better luck with Beryl than Compiz, or vice versa? - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Call it what you want...you can only spin the stupid cube so much and the effects start to get on your nerves....there's a fine line between functionality and pure eye candy...Beryl/Compiz crossed that line a long time ago and never looked back.
I prefer Vista's or OSXs effects...subtle and functional. No need for a window to burst into flames when it closes or for windows to wobble when moved at all... - MilesTeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is simply awesome!
it should be an example for all areas where OSS is unnecessary seperated :-) - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@mainstreampress, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek_humor
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't you just turn the flame off or whatever? I was under the impression that you could fine tune the effects to be subtle and functional if you so wanted(I have not used Beryl because my computer does not seem to like it). Also. can you save profiles so that you can have subtle and functional for your everyday use, and then switch to flashy and obnoxious with a click when you want to show it off to a friend?
- atb12688, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This makes me want to switch to ubuntu that much more.

- LouwP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent news and a sure win for the Linux/FOSS community. It is allways good to see people set aside their personal differences for the greater good of the whole community in true Ubuntu fashion
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@hobnob, He had expected Windows Vista to be as neat as Beryl.
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Really? Because every computer that I bought came with a copy of Windows preinstalled. I doubt Compaq is selling me illegal copies of Windows.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1From using Compiz and then Beryl for over 6 months on a Edgy Eft install I have to say this ***** gets old way too fast...

- tone77, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This is going to be awesome for the Linux community. I hope more projects would join forces and create a kick-ass product.
- meez, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Nobody pays for windows. Jeez.

- pizpot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0After you install it, does warcraft3demo via wine still slow down, or should I try composite again?
