*pitchforks and torches* - darkchild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BSD Unix is not based on system v unix. It started off as a series of patches to AT&T Unix, but eventually replaced most of the AT&T unix code. Even in their court battle with AT&T, BSD Unix had to replace only a few files.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Tom Yager said this several months ago. SCO2... errr... I mean Novell... will probably inherit System V when McBride takes SCO to the ground.
- tymiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Novell owned the trademark to the word UNIX, (Novell decided to transfer the UNIX® trademark and certification rights to the X/Open Consortium. In 1996, X/Open merged with OSF, creating the Open Group. ) they also own Unix software systems 3, 4 and 5 that they got from AT&T.
Remember that BSD Unix is based on Unix System 5 from AT&T. The goverment allowed it to be developed because it was not to be sold for commercial use. (Since Berkley said they created BSD for use in house and for research)
Out side of that Novell owns the rights to almost everything Unix, AT&T developed. - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2which unix? certainly not BSD...
there are several different builds of unix and if novell owns one it does not mean they own all the unices...
