- Dracker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13It's about time more people started taking a stance against software patents.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Do you think they'll target their partner Microsoft? The prime example of software patent abuse?
Pigs will truly fly then. - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17There are some who see OSS as part of the anti-capitalist movement. They were only too quick to jump on the Microvell deal while conveniently forgetting to mention the benefits. Know that at least one version of Vista can legally be virtualised, that's thanks to the Microvell deal as a concession on the part of MS.
Fact is Novell have been a dying company. All their products are in recession bar one, SUSE. Tell me, what sound business model advocates attacking your star products in favour of the dogs. Novell's future is in Linux and they must have an end game as a result.
Between:
1. The fact the deal only lasts 5 years
2. GPLv3
3. The number of patents held by pro-OSS companies like IBM, Sun, Red Hat and indeed Novell
The patent covenant is irrelevant. Remember that Novell are not protected under the covenant. If there are patents infringed MS can still go after Novell.
That Novell is supporting patent reform and gained massive concessions in terms of virtualisation and interoperability from MS means the deal is largely positive. - amfantasy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I don't get Novell anymore, everyone keeps saying that their against Linux but all of their actions point to supporting Linux. This how patient deal is gray area, I don't care what any Novell hater says.

Patent trolls are prime examples of patent abuse.
All software patents should be nullified and done away with. Why is it that anyone other than Microsoft can have really awesome disk and partition management built/included into their OS, but when Microsoft tries beef up the Disk Management snap-in, Symantec sues them for trying to use their (supposed) monopoly position to leverage their position in the market of disk & partition managers? Is that something an OS should do? Is violating "A system of allowing communication to and from hardware" patent abuse? - BlackAdderIII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"""This *does* have a whiff of damage control to it, but if this helps OSS in the long run I'm glad to see it."""
Setting The Deal aside for a second, what contact I've had with Novell tells me they're a very very pro-GPL outfit since they "went Linux", but are lacking the funds they really need. If they are looking to secure lots of funds and they do act decently with it, it would seem in line with their attitude.
The trouble is, the "at all costs" approach.
Most grown-up developers and users couldn't give a rattling crap about them doing an *interoperability* deal with Microsoft in the long run. For me personally it's the setting up of this illusory "liability" thing and the resulting concept of getting "permission" from Microsoft to use OSS that's uncomfortable.
Admittedly that's mostly an invention of Microsoft, but it doesn't sit well at all. - amfantasy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@judicata
sorry about that, I really bastard the English language there.
what I was trying to say was
"I feel that the Microsoft-Novell deal is gray area" - R3j3ct, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5So let me see if I get this straight... Novell just found a way to use Microsoft's own money to fight the patents that microsoft claims to have against linux
- cstrippie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5This *does* have a whiff of damage control to it, but if this helps OSS in the long run I'm glad to see it.
- Theli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"DIGG SUCKS *****"
If only that was true... - CircleFusion, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I don't really think they consider Microsoft their "partner".
They made a business deal with a competitor that was theoretically mutually beneficial for both parties.
Microsoft is still one of their competitors. - tarpit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Its good to see that Novell is jumping into the "good fight" after getting their reputation tarnished with the the Microsoft deal. Check out the latest LUGradio episode for some interesting information on it.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Guys, digg me down for stating the obvious BUT I'm with you, just because i think novel are trying to mend public relations, doesn't mean i think it's a bad thing
- Wasyu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's about time these bogus patents were challenged.
- chadrm9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1how many times have you commented "digg sucks *****" today? no way its more than you have sucked this afternoon alone.
piss off. - williamdyer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Novell's CEO continues to make weasely comments about how Novell customers are "protected." ***** him and the horse he rode in on.
- Judicata, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3@amfantasy:
First, I can barely understand what you said. ("This how patient deal is gray area"???). But, the argument is generally not that Novell is "against Linux." Instead, people disagree with certain ways Novell goes about attempting to support it (namely, the MS-Novell deal). And this isn't inconsistent with that - it will likely be viewed as an attempt to mitigate the negative ink Novell got about that deal from the OSS community. - ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2They are probably there to sabotage it.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4So they've bought a crap scraper.
They'll be starting on their own doorsteps first in the cleanup. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0"There are some who see OSS as part of the anti-capitalist movement. They were only too quick to jump on the Microvell deal while conveniently forgetting to mention the benefits."
The benefits... for capitalism. And yes, the FREE SOFTWARE MOVEMENT was founded as an anti-capitalist movement (a number of anarchist groups link to the FSF as an anarchist group).
"Know that at least one version of Vista can legally be virtualised, that's thanks to the Microvell deal as a concession on the part of MS."
*sarcasm* OOOOH! YAY! I can finally virtualize vista, it's what ive always dreamed of!!!!! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1DIGG SUCKS *****
