- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You could, you know, go to a "store" and buy a few. I'm sure you could digg enough change out of the couch for a couple CD-Rs.
- brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is the one that is supposed to have a modified OpenOffice that has full macro compatibility with MS Office. I can't wait to see that.

Opensuse 10.1 has been out for a while. However, I believe this article is referring to SLED and SLES their enterprise products. OpenSuse is to Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop/Server as Fedora is to Redhat now. - neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yes... wouldn't 100% macro compatability imply it's able to launch Outlook (that would be pretty impressive) and spam all your friends?
- Lazaryn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's openSUSE 10.1.
It is SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 that is being released Monday. - xose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://marc.herbert.free.fr/linux/win2linstall.html
http://en.opensuse.org/Installation_without_CD - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED 10) support contract costs 50 bucks a year, for those 50 bucks you get support and security updates, plus some other stuff I forgot about right now, but that is how Novell will be making money on SLED 10.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I may have to fire up VMWare for this puppy...
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6SLED? I didn't know it was coming out Monday, I just burned RC3 to CDs today, I guess that was a waste of time. I guess I should have expected it, since it was RC3, but I didn't know it was Monday. I can't wait to try it out though, I've heard so many good things about it and the screenshots look great and I'm a KDE user.
- xose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They do it so as not to waste precious bandwidth. Final versions always include a DVD edition, but Betas and RCs do not. CD1 is all you need to get a basic SuSE setup, so they save tons of bandwidth if the final users know what they need.
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, what's with the no-DVD thing? I haven't seen a computer in years that didn't have a DVD drive in it, and it's not like it's any more difficult for them to create a DVD .iso file than a bunch of CD .iso files (in fact, it's probably easier to create just one file). I've noticed this with other Linux distros as well. At least Microsoft knows better -- Vista comes on a DVD -- even my 2-year-old copy of Windows Server 2003 has both a DVD that contains everything and a bunch of CDs in the box.
- nailer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Pre-Release (not OpenSuSE) is downloadable now from the front page of novell.com.
Alas, no DVD version, just eleventy billion CDs. - sks112, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SuSe is the best linux I've ever used. Good luck Novell!
- xose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Download it here: http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=N1YveG_t53Y~
Click on "Proceed to download" to get the actual links. You'll need an account on Novell.com - smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow... thumbs down for a pun!? shoot, I liked that one!
For those who don't get it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Philip_Sousa - bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For anyone that's interested - It's SUSE linux 10.1, not openSUSE 10.1. Originally the brand was SuSE, which changed recently to SUSE. However because of the continued confusion between the SUSE Linux product and the openSUSE program, from 10.2 forward the product will be renamed to openSUSE.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Is there a way to install exclusively from the hard drive? I'm totally out of CD-Rs...
- smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Download it, put it on CDs, and try it out. If you don't like it, throw the CDs into the toilet and flush. Of course, that will cause your toilet to overflow... Because at that point, you have a....

ba-dum-bump. - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think you should expect 100% macro compatibility, but the most common stuff and a few advanced feature I believe is possible.
- urbanshepherd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nope, opensuse did, and the RC's have been around for a while.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1xose,
I love you. (: - 022A, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Network install via NFS or SMB.
- dss311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone explain what new features will be provided from the opensuse 10.1 version that was released a few weeks back? Will SLED 10.1 also be available via download?
- sbovisjb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ummm personally i think SuSe is nice and all but how does Novell make all of its money back... But then again the open source community has proven to be the quickest and fastest way of developing things, so im guessing that they get free labour, but then impliment those ideas into their desktop clients.
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1daemon tools wont work if he needs to boot from the CD.
sorry man, i dunno what to tell you. i'm sure theres a way to do it, but i can't recall off the top of my head. - thesnowman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe you should use CD-RWs?
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope it fixes all the bugs that I encounter on a daily basis in openSuse 10.1.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, I didn't edit my comment in time.
I meant to add:
Other than those, Suse is a damn fine distro. I have not tried SLED yet, so don't consider me a reliable critic on it. :) - LilGator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How Do You Pronounce "SUSE"?
Another question that gets asked alot...
SUSE LINUX AG is a German company, so one could assume the proper pronunciation for "SUSE" would be whatever the company says. The company has been known to pronounce it as "zu-zuh". This pronunciation uses sounds that are not natively found in English, so native English speakers have taken to calling it a wide range of things.
A common American pronunciation is "suzi", which sounds like the girl's name "Susie". Another common pronunciation is "soose" (or "zoose") which sounds like a word that rhymes with "moose" (think Dr. Seuss).
There are plenty of other ways to pronouce it, I say it like it rhymes with "moose" as described above. There is a German word, "susse" (actually it is spelled capital "S", "u" with an umlaut, esset or "shaf ess"), it means "sweet" (go here, select "English to German", and type in "sweet" to see what I mean). This is how I justify my pronunciation. What's odd is this word can also be pronounced as described in the first paragraph.
I used to live in Germany and their pronunciations are crazy, so feel free to pronounce it however you want (though I'd love it if my version became the accepted American pronunciation, so say it my way, dammit)."
http://suseroot.com/about-suse-linux/how-do-you-pronounce-suse.php - Glanzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cranked it back up one notch because that was a great pun.
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This seems overly confusing to me. There is an openSuse 10.1, but Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 is just coming out now?
People would refer to both as just Suse. So it no longer makes sense if someone tells you they have Suse 10. Is that openSuse 10 (which would be old) or is it the brand new SLED 10?
Way to confuse the hell out of your customers, Novell. - tapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And I'm confused about the pronounciation. Suse rhyming with 'goose'? Or Soo-suh?
- brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tried Suse for a week and then I went back to Ubuntu.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Network install via NFS or SMB."
I will look into that. Any links to related documentation are highly appreciated. In the meantime, I will be doing some intense Googling. Yes baby yes. - Superman101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Use a USB thumbdrive. Do it all the time with embedded systems. Not sure how it would work with multiple cds but im sure its in a wiki somewhere. Done it with debian and ubuntu (i know... same thing) bunch of times
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Use a USB thumbdrive. Do it all the time with embedded systems. Not sure how it would work with multiple cds but im sure its in a wiki somewhere. Done it with debian and ubuntu (i know... same thing) bunch of times"
I could never get my USB thumbdrive to boot though. It appears in my BIOS boot order, but even at first priority the system seems to ignore it. It doesn't even indicate that it checks it. Luck is not on my side I suppose. - invader, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4SUSE Linux 10.1 has been available for at least a little while
( http://download.opensuse.org/ )
now, i'm curious if the enterprise desktop version (SLED) will be free.. i really doubt it, but i hope so.. i'll be doing another 3+ GB DL this week if it is - Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just wait a day or so and hit the torrent sites. A ***** load of people will be hosting it.
- kandresen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sorry about that, posted to wrong list
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I always hesitate when I'm about to type 'suse' and wonder about the canonical capitalisation. sUsE? sUSE? SuSE? SuSe? or perhaps 5u53, it is teh r0x0rz ;)
- joshuakuhn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I'm hoping this is talking about a new version of SLED because I've had the boxed version of 10.1 for something like 4 months now....
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Didn't SuSE 10 release several months ago?
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1daemon tools
it lets you emulate a CD drive
