- Sintu, on 01/05/2008, -3/+33Nice article. I am can now tell all my friends I'm a l33t hacker.
- MalamuteTX, on 01/05/2008, -1/+29I guess the server got nmapped and hacked?
- monkeestylee, on 01/05/2008, -0/+27every admin should know how to use nmap, among other things. like ping or netcat.
- spyd3rweb, on 01/05/2008, -1/+25man nmap
- secion8, on 01/05/2008, -3/+22Did you hear that awful sound..!? Another servers down!
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+17Dude, seriously, you need to get laid. Even I couldn't read that.
- Daggity, on 01/05/2008, -3/+17http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Nmap_for_Beginner ...
To the rescue. - fox40, on 01/05/2008, -0/+11Not all beginners are script kiddies
- r00tus3r, on 01/05/2008, -0/+11man nmap ? :/
- numb, on 01/05/2008, -0/+10At first glance I thought it was some kind of regex.
- xdvx, on 01/05/2008, -1/+10Hackers article gets down by digg ddos attack.
- lickmyback, on 01/05/2008, -0/+9Note to 'beginners': some ISPs take exception to people portscanning large subnets and will send you angry letters if you do. I have one in my drawer somewhere. Either slow down the scan or use a proxy. :)
- bsdboy, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8What does nmap have to do with you bitching about your job?
- zephyr42, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8lol if beginners never started anything we'd have...... the dark ages again :-P
- xaviel, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8WordPress for the win...
- BlaenkDenum, on 01/05/2008, -0/+7Trinity used this program in Matrix Reloaded to hax0r.
- flaterates, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6http://insecure.org/nmap/
- sporg, on 01/05/2008, -1/+7Someone get a fire extinguisher digg just torched our rack.
- jambarama, on 01/05/2008, -1/+6Duggmirror got it: http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Nmap_for_Beginner ...
- int10h, on 01/05/2008, -1/+6It's wordpress
- badtiki, on 01/05/2008, -1/+6I would trust an IX based server any day over any MS crap! I prefer the precision of using a CLI based server - from managing BIND to adding sites in apache, the GUI may be faster at times but more often than not there are more issues.
- fonik, on 01/05/2008, -0/+5A more digg appropriate title would be "nmap- like ping on steroids!"
- VashTSPD, on 01/05/2008, -1/+6I first learned nmap from the two irongeek videos everyone should have seen by now,
http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=videos/nmap1
http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=videos/nmap2 - williamdyer, on 01/05/2008, -1/+5Dood, you are *****. Maybe you could get a gig with Microsoft's IT department. Microsoft has lost the server fight. Nobody is willing to pay for server software.
- chedabob, on 01/05/2008, -1/+54 minutes of popularity and down. Lame.
- Gagle, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3and a known ssh exploit if I'm not mistaking. (Please correct me if I wrong...)
- jhuebel, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3netcat serves its own purpose. It's always good to know what processes are listening on your server so you can decide what's needed and what can disabled or firewalled.
- antdude, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3Yep, and many others: http://insecure.org/nmap/nmap_inthenews.html
I didn't see Bourne Ultimatum's nmap screen. Although I saw Norton Internet Security 2006 (sheesh, old). - bsdboy, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3build it from source. Or check out darwinports.
- amphoterous, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3If a server goes down in the farm, does the admin hear a sound?
- skyshock1, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3Anyone know of a CLI version of nmap ported to the mac? I know they have nmapFE with the GUI.
- necroalgae, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2exactly, why is this article being dugg?
- djGentoo, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2You forgot a tag: [/unjustified rant]
Would you mind explaining? - williebee, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3No thanks, I'll stick with google maps
- clearzen, on 01/05/2008, -3/+5I don't know why this made it to the front page. You could find all of this out by looking at the help screen for nmap in the CLI
- RoroCo, on 01/05/2008, -1/+3Big props for the error message though "Ooops...Sorry we are having the Digg Effect..!"
- skyshock1, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2Oh wait, here we go. I used Fink to install it. Pretty easy actually, you just have to remember to add /sw/bin to your $PATH variable, or simply make a symlink to /usr/bin
- numb, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1ngrep can be useful too when you want to quickly scan network traffic. Understanding pcap filters goes a long way as well since many of these network tools use libpcap.
- Tanath, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Like they've been doing for years?
- aaronm67, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1...sorry, but you are very, very wrong there. Every decent sized company in the world is willing to pay for server software. A manager will take a non-free proven system over a free unproven system any day of the week. Hell, many managers will refuse to use a system if it ISN'T free.
Microsoft has lost the server fight, but not because nobody is willing to pay for server software. Microsoft has lost the server fight because their servers are vastly inferior and harder to find admins for. - bioskope, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1Dont dig down parent. He's absolutely right. Even possessing Nmap or Nessus is punishable upto 12 months of imprisonment in Germany.
Granted I'm linking to "Wolf Criers" ElReg . But this was widely covered around the time and this is the link google popped up first
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08/13/german_ant ... - bdbr, on 01/05/2008, -3/+4Also, keep in mind that many corporate networks have anomaly detection that will pick up "rogue" activity like port scans. Do you really want info security paying you a visit?
If you're just a network user (not an admin, or not even adept enough to run 'man'), you probably have no business using these kinds of tools. - Paapaa, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2And don't do anything stupid. In some countries even harmless port scanning might be considered illegal. Just be careful.
- EmperorAwesome, on 01/05/2008, -2/+2Netcat? C'mon, we're not talking about network admins anymore.
- DigeratiPrime, on 01/05/2008, -1/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_page_(Unix)
- williamdyer, on 01/06/2008, -1/+1Who the ***** are you to say who should run what software?
- mearom, on 01/05/2008, -4/+4THis kind of stuff is what digg is about
- floyd6, on 05/24/2008, -0/+0http://www.genericsmed.com
http://www.generics.ws - BadAssBG, on 01/05/2008, -2/+1Hmm, 50 digs and I get Error establishing a database connection
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -3/+1Also keep in mind some fools with norton will pick up a port scan, report it to their isp as "hacking"
