- CoolGoose, on 09/19/2008, -2/+21I'm waiting for Kde 4.2 and Amarok 2.0 final. Kde 4.1 almost took me from my spiffy Gnome Desktop.
- neasteflorin, on 09/19/2008, -6/+23Gnome is - to me - more stable and lightweight than KDE.
- regicide, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12I remember the first time I tried Ubuntu, I couldn't figure out how to install applications lol.

- huff51, on 09/19/2008, -0/+9why not? does running ubuntu stop me from going to a terminal and editing conf files?
- YodaJones, on 09/19/2008, -1/+10Hey, nice article. Even a few experienced users can get something out of it. Thanks.
- Blackham, on 09/19/2008, -1/+8I really like Ubuntu, but until some of the major 3D packages are created native to Linux, ive got to stick with windows.
btw, ive tried using wine for my apps, but they run like a slug :c( - 4321234, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5I like to demo various distro's a lot, so this type of article is perfect. Explaining must-do tweaks that may have changed a bit since the last version. Props.
- wheresjim, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5That tattoo is going to make as much sense in 10 years as the Mandrake Linux one I got 10 years ago makes now.
- Cenobite, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5Wow, you guys should write a book.
- inactive, on 09/19/2008, -1/+6Step 1, install KDE.
- neasteflorin, on 09/19/2008, -1/+6About upgrading via the command line - I've done it twice with absolutely no issues, I don't know what's the problem there.
- neasteflorin, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5It takes a little time to tweak all the settings, but once you do that - it's a home run.
- Cenobite, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Some people just like to roll that way :)
- MWeather, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Blender works for me.
- Evolutuon, on 09/19/2008, -5/+9If you've done some major tweaking with your distro I wouldn't recommend an upgrade using the command line. :/
- HonestAbe, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4But why use the command line when you can just use update-manager?
- colinnwn, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Because they can't put them in there!!! MS fonts are not GPLed and are not available under a redistributable license. I haven't reviewed the specific license, but it is probably illegal for you to install the fonts on Ubuntu unless you have a valid Win license. It is the same reason Ubuntu can't have DVD and MP3 playback configured out of the box. They would have to pay a licensing fee to the organizations that own DVD and MP3 standards.
- MWeather, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4That's because Add/Remove Programs in windows isn't actually where you add programs, so you'd never think to look there on Linux, despite being clearly labeled. Bad habits die hard.
- computershack, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4I really like Ubuntu but until I can browse Windows shares in Nautilus like I could in 7.10, then I've got to stick with Windows. And no, downgrading to 7.10 isn't an option because my wifi doesn't work then.
- OneLess, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4Is there a way to get that nice panel/window transparency he has without the Hacked theme he links to in the other article? Any good themes that have it?
- abbathdoom, on 09/19/2008, -2/+5Step 2: remove KDE and install XFCE.
- santasing, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3True for me as well. KDE 4 was a crapshoot, depending on who you ask. But 4.1 is a lot better. Hoping for many good things from 4.2, especially good looking Firefox GUI widgets.
- SteveMax, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Yes, the article is very poorly written. I mean, "compile" Picasa (which is distributed as a precompiled binary)? dist-upgrade is a package you install? Suggesting live upgrades to beginners? Come on! At the very least he should have someone else read it before putting it online.
- ethana2, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2I'm using ubuntu netbook stuff on my ubuntu desktop install... It's really the most innovative DE I've seen thus far. ...I removed ume-launcher though.
- shanesemler, on 09/19/2008, -2/+4I don't trust upgrades. If you want to break your system, go ahead. Clean installs for me.
- php4me, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2On GNOME the panel transparency only works if you have the same desktop background on each workspace. If you use multiple desktop backgrounds, then the panel keeps the same "transparency" from the first workspace on all workspaces.
Needless to say it looks ugly. - xtothepowerofx, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2anyone use any version of gOS?...
- obsaysditto, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2for people new to ubuntu, defintiely a good place to start. Also after a clean install for the experienced users.
- neasteflorin, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2I'm going to review that next week.
- Bicep, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2I have to use alt+scrollwheel to change transparency of windows for some reason.
- sfury, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2dugg for Amarok and VLC
- nossifer, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2all you need:
Beginner: ubuntuguide.org
Advanced: ubuntuforums.com
and lets not forget msdn.microsoft.com ;) they were always a great help to me. (sorry for the flamebait) - MWeather, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Windows doesn't come with any of that either, unless you buy it pre-installed. But pre-installed Linux also comes with it, so that's a moot point.
"why ubuntu doesn't put the MS fonts there in the first place boggles my mind."
Yeah, it boggles my mind that Microsoft won't allow it, too, and that it's legal. - MWeather, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2KDE has nothing to do with Firefox's GUI. Trolltech is making a QT version, though.
- Leopards, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Nice article, but all of this stuff can be done without going to the terminal and using CLI, Would have taken a little more effort to show new people how to use synaptic package manager, but then they could do all this and more by themselves next time, instead of having to be hand held and copying and pasting to the command line each time!!
- Vadi0, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2Panel transparency is set via right-click, panel properties, and then using the slider bar.
Window is via super key (windows key) and scrollwheel. - johnnyg, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1You are a genius!
- strazer, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1What do you mean exactly? What is different in 7.10 compared to the new versions?
- ileftfark, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1I came to say the same thing. It's not a ***** package! Nerd Rageeeeeeee
- kylere, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Now this is USEFUL, there was a 10 point last week that lacked much real value, but as someone making the transition from FC4/WIn systems to all Ubuntu this is handy.
- ColKurtz, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Step 4 is supposed to be 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'
- OneLess, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I was just looking at this again and I got this post mixed up with "10 things you wanted to do with Ubuntu but didn't know how!" which for some reason has different screenshots on the actual page than what is showing up in my feed reader.
Changing panel transparency by right clicking apparently doesn't work well with the theme I'm using, because only sections of the panel change transparency. - hardeep1singh, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1let me complete the incomplete tip
OS X sucks! - vanden9, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1How can I get those cool ubuntu cd covers..
- NTolerance, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1You cannot browse Windows network shares that require authentication in Hardy:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bu ... - jamdogg, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1config your samba daemons and you'll be fine
- Evolutuon, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1Its not that I really did "major" tweaking its just that the type of settings I ended up having on Gutsy didn't do too well in Hardy. My fault of course, but I'm more the wiser now.
- santasing, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1MWeather....thanks for clearing that up. I always wondered why FF looks so different in KDE.
