- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18There are a lot of tasks that require very little processing power. Combine this with an external hard drive (or simply network the computer), and one gets a nice media center for about a third of the price of a Mac Mini.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I like how people complain about grandma's Linux use when convenient to do so, and then also pretend granny is compiling her distribution from scratch and playing Doom 3 and Quake 4 simultaneously when convenient. You can't have it both ways, *****.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15That's more than most of the web surfing, email reading, book report writing market requires.
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Not everybody goes here every day, not to mention new visitors.
- LunchMoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Better video quality here http://cebitvideo.com/?p=20
And product details http://yellowsheepriver.org/products.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15very good for linux....
with the chinese on board our goal of world domination is one step closer... - erov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Just like some commercial software in the US, huh? ;)
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I was amused by some of the little problems with communication:
"Is that USB2?"
"Yes, four USB ports..." - narduk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Where do I buy one?
- shoguning, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10What PC could you make for less than $146? Also, It's pretty small.
- fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The link to the video is pretty interesting: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9203462148706105599
- evangelion01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11you can clearly see that the chinese guy has no friggin idea what he is selling, he pointed at the ethernet port and said it was usb and many other things...
- RADicalSatDude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I hope this product takes off.
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You can buy one in Europe too. This event is CeBIT Australia
- Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Haha
"Uh ya, we haf deh... USB [points to Ethernet] and deh..." - timalmond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A lot of IT professionals don't get this. There are a lot of people running some very low power apps on their machines.
Of all my neighbours, a couple are programmers, but most are doing nothing but office stuff, internet, mail and IM. If they're playing games, it's normally puzzle ones. - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Computer Optimisation forAll"!
"6 or 7 ninjas wide" - Kujila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5True, but keep in mind that China has a lot of working class, low-income people living there. Also, this seems to come "out of the box" and plug into a television set, so the Chinese customer wouldn't need to buy a monitor.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Which technology would that be? The one that is illegal in USA. Or is it that everything that comes out of China is cheap, crappy and illegal.
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@unbeatable
You fail to see that GNU/Linux is designed to be run on any platform with any specs, so Linux running on P1 will run just as good on a P4. I think its not only the size thats attractive, in my opinion if this takes off this will change home computing forever. First of all its an economic PC that could be afforded by everyone, the guy in the video was saying that there are lots of people in third world countries with no knowledge of computers. No software licenses make this product also very cheap since its running entirely on Free software. And its targeted towards casual computer users who can plug it to their home TV and start using their computer.
I think this is another example of the $100 laptop that became so popular. - gmacster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And How well can you speak Chinese?
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Good job. Asians always have to show us that big, bulky and raw power is not the only way to go (cars). Especially, when you need a PC for surfing, basic applications (office, media players, email client, messengers, skype, casual games etc.) and such.
- JelloZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The cheapest mobo at mp3car.com is $280. Please price me out and show me where you can get " your own w/512 ram and a DVD drive for that price".
Thanks - jas8522, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's definitely one of the first things I noticed too! The USB being the Ethernet port is great, there was also: "Is that the CPU there?", as he points at what appeared to be the northbridge, "Yes, yes yes" the sales rep says. It's more than likely the one with the heatsink on it is the CPU... but I could certainly be wrong.
Then he can't figure out how to use openoffice... he's strictly sales, no product knowledge at all!
"You can go full screen, right?"..... "Yes.. yes... where's the full screen?" - myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the prices on mp3car.com don't even come close to comparing - the via epia 120mm x 120mm mobo/cpu combos are $399, twice the cost of the entire municator.
and yes, maybe you can build a pc from fry's for half the cost, if you know how/want to, but how big/noisy/ugly/hot/inefficient will it be?
45 W, fanless, the size of a twin-cd case - this is great.
dugg - zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4more likely that the Municator has no backdoor since its a Linux box and if it runs all Free software then its easy to check for any malicious activity.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6China!
It's unlikely these will ever be sold in the USA, at least not at that price, because some of the technology used in the computer is illegal in America due to patents. - muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No problem with dupes. If people digg them, it's beacuse many didn't get it.
I for one can't keep up with all the stuff posted here, I have a job and a life. - Monoboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow, this thing is impressive. I could see myself getting one just to use as a small media center that I could take with me to friend's houses to play movies and music.
Also it seems like this could take off in an office environment. Not only is it small, but it's cheap and simple.
With USB ports you could hook up printers (as long as there are Linux print drivers).
The only downside I can see is not having a DVD/CD ROM. Everything would have to be updated over a network unless you have an external one.
Still an amazing product. I hope they hit the US. - fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Just wait when we actually waste out money on one of these things"
This is clearly not for advanced users, it's aimed at the Chinese market in an attempt to close the digital divide (as the guy in the video states). That's the whole point: a cheap computer that anyone in China will be able to buy. - silkworm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think, it is a perfect product for a home server, router or maybe a thin client. Low power consumption, passive cooling. That' great. There are similarly sized computers for that purpose on the market, but much more expensive.
- gregm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Frys has a linux PC with a sempron 2400, 128MB DDR ram, a 40GB HDD, and a mini tower case (with PCI slots open) for about $170. This is cool, but nothing spectacular.
- DIGGADEEP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7does he even know what usb is??
- pirateboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this would be great for a car pc setup no? Its ready for touch screen, and its super small already out of the box. and its cheap, not a huge loss if your car is jacked right?
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not in its current state; Ubuntu doesn't maintain a MIPS port, however Debian, Ubuntu's progenitor, does maintain a MIPS port, and Debian should run fine on this machine.
- LeeVal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Motherbox
- skwashd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This was really cool a month ago when it was first on digg. I am still waiting for distributor information for Australia. I have sent them 3 emails and got 1 we will get back to you email. I am not filled with confidence about their ability to supply the machines :(
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YellowCheapRiver
- Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why don't they have at least a cd rom? Newegg has them available for $12 and I imagine in China you could get them for even cheaper.
- tiuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"And How well can you speak Chinese?"
Is he making a product presentation? - pdrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now this is COOL. It uses the Dragon CPU, which is a MIPS clone. If you're into assembly language, you'll appreciate that. That instruction set is one of the most perfectly designed ever. I'd buy one of these just for that reason.
- moylan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i found his english easy to understand.
as to not recognising a usb port. wouldn't be the first salesman to fail that one.
would i buy one? hell yes! at that price you could have a pc in every room for peanuts. even better it looks perfect for embedded applications or for building a robot. i hope this gizmo really takes off. even if they only release them in china i can see some smart importer bringing them in by the containerful. - ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4the cheapest Sempron (1.2 GHz, I think) you could buy, plus 512 RAM, plus a super-cheap MoBo. There was one at Fry's running Linspire a month or two back for that price.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love how windows fans say Apple is too expensive, but Linux is too cheap. Wow, what a coincidence, the only thing left that is windows - horray!
I hope they come out with something like that in the US. Even if it's a bit more expensive, it'd still be a hell of a deal.
And sales people in IT almost never know what they are selling. - rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't I read it has an IDE back connector with power? I don't know about you, but I've got at least two IDE DVD ROM drives laying around here. Wouldn't that work?
- muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2STFV . The whole thing is about the size of an internal CDROM player.
- kokobaroko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nowhere. It sadly looks like a Chinese publicity stunt, maybe government driven, to promote the country :(((
My company contacted them, we wanted to buy >1k a month for a start. NO FRIGGIN answer. No phones answered, no mails, no faxes, NOTHING NADA. - rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That is mostly why the Dupe-monsters complain so much... they don't have a life.
- shoguning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh, I just realized that the Municator is more powerful than the computer I'm on right now.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Which technology would that be?"
I believe it is the processor.
From http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS6301677114.html:
"The Godson-2 chip, codenamed "Dragon," uses an instruction set based on the MIPS architecture; however, BLX is not a MIPS licensee. The Microprocessor Report suggested last summer that BLX could face legal challenges from MIPS if its chips reach the U.S., although some other sources suggest that the Godson chips do not include patented portions of the MIPS ISA (instruction set architecture), such as unaligned 32-bit load/store support." -
