- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 04/10/2008, -4/+54If people really want to push Linux into the mainstream compiz is exactly the thing you need to boast about. Looks and eyecandy is the most important thing when it comes to attracting an average person who uses a computer. Many of the people in my life love macs simply because they're cute and look nice.
- amfantasy, on 04/10/2008, -0/+34If this hits front page you might lose the image shack link, but nice plugin
- brazen521, on 04/10/2008, -3/+26WOW, am I the ONLY one who notices that this a not a cylinder, but a conical section? I'll bet you can't even tell a dual polyhedron from a rhombic dodecahedron.
- gameforge, on 04/10/2008, -1/+23Bloat, somewhat; eye candy, yes; useless, not at all. It does help to see how useful it is if you actually use it (you know, with the purpose of trying to make it useful for you, and not just pretty).
Even if you don't find it particularly useful, you seem like you're angry about the project's very existence, despite that some do find it useful - why's that? - inactive, on 04/10/2008, -1/+23Then don't use it.

- amirman, on 04/10/2008, -2/+21where's the video!? seriously, when a video is supplied i will digg.
- skootz85, on 04/10/2008, -1/+19K Mart Sheriff? Gayest name ever.
- alexforcefive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+15Congratulations for mistaking the terms "mainstream", "average person" and "many of the people in my life" for "supermanred"
- aywwts4, on 04/10/2008, -1/+16"Bloat" doesn't run excellently on 300 dollar Eeepc, this is excellently coded unbloated eye candy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzzhEs9XGuE - paintpro, on 04/10/2008, -4/+17Cool looking, but a cube makes more sense.
- directrix13, on 04/10/2008, -1/+12Uhhh... Mac hardware does not tend to be of higher performance than the average PC, compiz runs even on embedded Intel graphics smoothly. I run this on my $400 Dell laptop and run it smoothly. They know what they are doing.
- Atomic1fire, on 04/10/2008, -1/+12How...
Linux runs a lot of servers
and powers a few cellphones and TiVo
Tivo is not useless - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+9This guy is sadistic. He codes on that bright blue background.
- tj111, on 04/10/2008, -1/+10Linux runs approximately 60% of the worlds servers, and powers most of the internet.
- catachip, on 04/10/2008, -1/+9Well, we're both commenting on a Linux story on Digg on a Wednesday evening, so, I don't think it bodes well for either of us.
- smotpoker, on 04/10/2008, -0/+7I agree with most of what you said to some degree and dugg the comment, but I know several people who bought macs and do nothing substantial with them just because of the aesthetics of the UI and hardware.
And as for Linux maintenance and hardware support, it's very variable depending on distro and hardware, but it has been years since I've had more than one component *completely* unusable at install (usually wifi) - bratterscain, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7It's essentially a window manager and very good one. The eye candy is just a perk.
- gameforge, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7That kicks ass. :)
Compiz does reduce performance of real-time stuff, e.g. video playback, or Google Earth. It does that even on top-of-the-line systems. According to my performance monitor this is more the fault of the drivers, and it's certainly a fair tradeoff for what you're getting; further, tweaking Compiz just the right way (not trivial, admittedly) for your system will eliminate much of the problems.
But for someone who finds its only value to be eye-candy and not something to actually assist in using your monitor to "experience" your (much bigger and "alive") desktop and the programs you're running, I could see why it could raise their bloat meter a notch or two.
Honestly, being able to zoom in on anything at any time, being able to organize my work on a four-sided cube (vs. four paged desktops, each in their own universe) and being able to fade out a window to see what's behind it are all purely functional uses for me. I cannot see why people call it "useless" or purely "eye-candy"; that's only the case with respect to themselves, not everyone who uses it. - Heywoodj, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6I agree. I keep a seprate hard drive full of "nix tricks" just to show people what is possible. I've made a few duel booters this way.
Like it or not there is strength in numbers. And pretty shiny things get the heathens attention. - nanostream, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7That's pretty awesome!
Let me know when sphere is the oven - jstone, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6You know, I wish the average person thought that way about computers, but they don't. I had a scenario just today where somebody was impressed by Linux simply because I was using the desktop cube plugin for compiz fusion at the moment. If I tried to explain the technical merits of linux, they would have drawn a total blank. Instead, I showed them the flashier features like compiz, and the useful features like the package manager. That really got them interested.
- canthraxp, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7Guys developing Compiz Fusion != Guys developing Gnome.
- solidus636, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6You, clackerd, have OBVIOUSLY never used Linux.
- HonoredMule, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5boot duels? I don't think it will catch on. Fencing is so much flashier.
- Darkhacker, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Just in case, mirror: http://imgplace.com/image/view/9b9fa3e13d65f189ff5 ...

- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -2/+7First post. I like to rush for it.
- ahvi, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/fusion/plugins/cubeaddon
Must have the latest git version of Compiz Fusion.

http://gitweb.opencompositing.org/ - swanny89, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6It does when you mean servers in a commercial sense. As in, computers that have to have insane uptime while under heavy load, top=tier security, and tools made for sysadmins, yeah it does carry some weight.
- rkef, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Cube's ok; rectangle does just fine.
- trakie, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Previous versions were a cube, a cylinder is just a bit different, what with the curving and not flat surfaces. It is nothing like Apache saying we can host blogs.
- pingpongboss, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5The cylinder is tilted downwards. The top is closer to you than the bottom.
- geoken, on 04/10/2008, -3/+7You loose that half credit for talking about it. Don't you know that it's now standard practice to read the comments for every comment with a you tube link in order to find some evidence of rickRolling
- Heywoodj, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4Yes converting them to Linux at knife point isn't working as well as I had hoped.
But my slaughter of the English language continues unabated. - ghank, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4Thank god for flash block, almost got me there.
- omababy, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4Honestly, I don't use the cylinder plugin. Actually it's the first time I've heard of it, I just use the cube plugin.
- ArthurSucks, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4Ah the joy of geeking. Good job!
- tj111, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4Umm, the "Fusion" of the Compiz and Beryl Projects, hence Compiz Fusion.
- Koppie, on 04/10/2008, -1/+5YOU'RE all wrong.
- shakin, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3He can't be a real man because he doesn't use the same editor as me.
- DazWiLLiE, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3No, Compiz comes from the swedish word "kompis" (pal), as the creator of Compiz is from Sweden.
- Stonekeeper, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3The people moaning are the people who forked out for "Vista capable" machines.
- anylo, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3http://www.kdevelop.org/
- Stonekeeper, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3I don't know what you're talking about, but you get a thumbs up so you can dazzle other people like me.
- PaulRay, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3Of course it will. Why would you say that?
- tj111, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3Using the default settings, Ctrl + Alt + Click n Drag to spin around at will. Ctrl + Alt + [Right or Left] Arrow will go to the desktop to the right or left. Ctrl + Alt + Down Arrow unfolds the cube, allowing you to see multiple desktops side-by-side, expose style. http://bayimg.com/gajlcaaBF
- GoneFishing, on 04/10/2008, -1/+4Pretty cool. I would have preferred no tilting angle, but nice work.
