- amoore2600, on 08/13/2008, -32/+158Sliver light is an infection!
I cant view my Netflix "play now" videos and now the Olympics.
Moonlight probably wouldn't of helped, the streams are most likely laced with DRM that requirer windows media player too.
I hate M$. - Bicep, on 08/13/2008, -9/+88This is suck. The Internet is no place for Monopolizing content!! Send your complaints to feedback(at)nbcolympics.com and Sam Ramji (head of Interop at Microsoft) sramji(at)microsoft.com.
- Phocion55, on 08/14/2008, -4/+72I have to admit, this is a brilliant and expensive Silverlight trojan effort on Microsoft's part. Waiting for Microsoft's press release of "SILVERLIGHT INSTALL BASE UP 900%!"
- frontporsche, on 08/13/2008, -2/+68I thought one of the comments from the article was worth posting here...
"On day one, I downloaded and installed silverlight, and then was told that I couldn't view any content because I watch tv using an antenna. The message said that I had to use a cable or satellite partner of NBC if I wanted to watch a video stream on the internet." - ryborg, on 08/14/2008, -15/+73I hate Silverlight, and I hate MS. I had this very problem on my Ubuntu system at nbcolympics the other day -- Digg the article to get some notice!!
- jdh24, on 08/14/2008, -3/+56I'm using Safari on a NEW mac, a "supported browser" according to the site, but all of their videos crash safari. i knew i was doomed when i saw the MSN logo up in the corner.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -6/+35youtube! NBC please work out something with youtube next time...
- Nosrac, on 08/14/2008, -1/+25Quick question: If we're complaining is it really worth hiding the email from spam bots?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+23I use an antenna as well and feel the system is ***** up. However, all you have to do is select ATT, the first option and you can watch videos....don't log in.
- BigManOnCampus, on 08/13/2008, -6/+28One cliché does not demand the use of another.
- srg13, on 08/14/2008, -5/+26And a lot of people use Silverlight?
- dusanmal, on 08/14/2008, -6/+26If that was the issue, fine... But it is not. They are intentionally pushing Silverlight on the public (who have had Silverlight installed before this?) while better and more compatible technologies exist and are widespread already. Doing that for some little novelty is fine but not for such major event.
- AzureRise, on 08/14/2008, -3/+23***** DRM.
- bobbarkerbilly, on 08/14/2008, -5/+24Just another move to close up the internet. Is it really so difficult to stream video so every browser can watch? Oh that's right, DRM.
- Phocion55, on 08/14/2008, -4/+23Silverlight is a TINY MINORITY as well! They couldn't have gone with a more established, widely supported, and installed platform?
You just completely negated your own argument. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+209 people?!
Holy *****. - peterdangit, on 08/14/2008, -3/+21"I hate M$" -- there's the problem, it hates you back...
- username7410, on 08/14/2008, -9/+26I have new Mac and I can't watch some content.
- ChuqAU, on 08/14/2008, -5/+21It's nothing to do with demanding specific support for Linux. It's to do with the fact that the content people want is video content, and there are many video formats which are non-OS specific. Why not just use one of those?
- picpak, on 08/14/2008, -1/+17You're missing the point; the point is, websites shouldn't be platform and architecture-specific. They shouldn't be built for specific browsers, they shouldn't be built for specific operating systems, they should be built for the WEB. Hell, we don't care if it was only FreeBSD that was being shut out. The fact is, websites shouldn't be shutting anybody out in the first place.
- dusanmal, on 08/14/2008, -2/+18Problem is that perfectly good (and likely better than Silverlight!) technologies exist that support everyone (even such oddities as BSD and Solaris,...). But, NBC uses this "business opportunity" to propagate otherwise unused (have you used it before Olympics?) Silverlight. That is the issue...
- robzthird, on 08/14/2008, -3/+18Ever heard of fmt=18?
of course the source would have to be good quality... - MavRevMatt, on 08/14/2008, -0/+14WTF? That doesn't make any sense. NBC broadcasts on over the air digital here, Dallas area, so why does that block people from viewing it online?
- dhughes, on 08/14/2008, -4/+17 And of course the server OS the website is run off is Linux...the horror!
http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http:/ ... - coldfu5ion, on 08/14/2008, -0/+13If I was to write a spam bot, I would have it specifically look for abc(at)xyz.com as well as abc@xyz.com when trolling for email addresses.
- jordanday, on 08/14/2008, -2/+15I didn't realize Silverlight 2 doesn't work on older Macs or on Linux. Frankly I'm a little surprised they made Silverlight 2 the requirement when Silverlight 1 (basically a glorified video player anyway) DOES work on Linux and older Macs. Anyway, I do think Silverlight is a pretty neat technology, but yeah, it sucks if this article is correct.
Also, by "older macs" I presume they mean PPC-based ones, as opposed to some sort of Leopard / Tiger divide? - robopuppy, on 08/14/2008, -0/+13The ignorance of the majority of these comments is ***** spectacular. I thought most of you were technologically savvy. I was so ***** wrong it's ridiculous.
1) Older Macs are PPC; PPCs are not supported for many newer applications (mostly games), including Silverlight 2.
2) It is NOT because of an old Mac OS, although older Mac OS' obviously won't support the new Intel chips, so in that sense, yes.
3) Apple used PPCs up to 2006. That means MILLIONS of computers are not supported, NOT like 5 or 6 as some of you might believe.
4) This was clearly a set up by Microsoft to get everyone to download Silverlight and make it instantly mainstream; would most (not you, MOST, as in, the people who aren't complete computer geeks) people download it otherwise? - ptFoe, on 08/14/2008, -4/+17where is Miguel and his Mono bumchums?
where the ***** was their Moonlight to offer compatibility.
Moonlight is a Microsoft Trojan Horse, to give the impression and hope Silverlight will work with Linux, to give it ground to compete with Adobe's Flash - peterdangit, on 08/14/2008, -2/+15Yeah man, this sux big time. We can't have MS monopolizing, we all must use Flash!!!
- srg13, on 08/14/2008, -1/+13"Supporting Linux means hiring more people, which means more money spent."
Or they could just let you download a video file... Or offer a flash player? - bearzly, on 08/14/2008, -2/+14yeah, what the hell, I was about to go plug a monitor into my web server and watch some olympics.
thanks a lot M$ - BossKey, on 08/14/2008, -1/+13I'm enjoying fantastic HD over the air for free. Thank you for letting me know that I wasn't wasting my time installing Silverlight if they were going to deny me access based on my OTA reception of NBC.
- picpak, on 08/14/2008, -2/+131) VHS and Betamax are obsolete. Linux isn't.
2) Before the Olympics, I bet there were more Betamax users than Silverlight users. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+12Give me one good reason why they should have used Silverlight over the more multi platform, wider spread Flash Player which is also available on many mobile device.
And then get all bitchy and preachy about how Mac and Linux users aren't important... Because as far as "professional" websites go, multiplatform is important regardless of how many diggtards and otherwise stupid people who really think that Linux and Mac users are an insignificant market when it comes to professional content. - jeshjohn, on 08/14/2008, -3/+13I couldn't even get it to run on my new Windows Vista machine. It kept taking me to this NBC DRM Check page after about 30 minutes of fooling around with it, I just went to the pirate bay and downloaded what I wanted.
- username7410, on 08/14/2008, -1/+10Can you watch this content?
http://www.nbc.com/olympicsonthego/
Because this is what I get when I click "download."
"Sorry, NBC Direct currently requires Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows Media Center Edition or Windows Vista." - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -7/+16Few people use Linux*
*as a desktop OS - Cwo655321, on 08/14/2008, -1/+10yes, ***** DRM. but that's the only way they'll ever give it to you!
- magic6435, on 08/14/2008, -6/+15get your head out of your ass. They are not blocked because "its extra work for Linux" or something along those lines. they are blocked because Microsoft and the networks like to line everything in tons of DRM which the players for Linux and older macs don't respond to.
"Last I checked, no one is forcing you to use Linux or old Mac versions. Stop bitching for the choice YOU made."
That has got to be the dumbest comment i have ever read on digg.... so mabe they wanted to save some cash and not blow another 2 grand on a new mac if their powerpc is still doing what they need it to. or maybe they wanted to use and support the open software moment. there is no reason for the content NOT to work on these systems. its a matter of companies artificially mucking things up for certain techs. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -3/+11Well should we like Silverlight for what it's doing? It's bringing professional content into even more obtrusive and annoying DRM that sucks on anything other than Windows.
Silverlight is not popular in any way, or was not. So what do you think they're really doing it for? As a company, do you think they are doing it because they find Silverlight superior in delivering content, or just to make even more money off of this? And if they did think it was superior, why didn't they just offer alternative streams? - colincornaby, on 08/14/2008, -0/+8The Moonlight project has said they are already working on the fixes to make content from the Olympics work...
http://jeffreystedfast.blogspot.com/2008/08/moonli ...
I'm sure it won't be much solace considering the Olympics will probably be over by the time they make the patches, but at least it will be a Microsoft sanctioned way to deal with this in the future. - laelfrog, on 08/14/2008, -1/+9Bingo! I am not surprised the MSnbc is intentionally pushing Silverlight. It has much more to do with market domination than actual advancement of technology. Its nothing more than forced coercion into accepting Silverlight - they are "intentionally pushing Silverlight on the public" (good wording dusanmal)
- rdoger6424, on 08/14/2008, -0/+8why support plugins nobody uses? (silverlight)
- MavRevMatt, on 08/14/2008, -2/+10Last I checked, no one was forcing you to be a dick.
- actionscripted, on 08/14/2008, -1/+8If it weren't for how ubiquitous Flash Player is, you'd all be saying the same things about Adobe. Flash player is no better, it's just more widely available.
That said, NBC would've been better off embedding an .mov instead of using Silverlight... - ryborg, on 08/14/2008, -18/+25I hate Silverlight and I hate MS. I had this very problem the other day on my Ubuntu box when trying to visit nbcolympics -- Digg this article and lets get some notice!!
- diemunkiesdie, on 08/14/2008, -0/+7You can just select another "provider". I had selected OTA Antenna first, but then it told me I can't watch! On the same screen where it told me that I can't watch, I was also given the option to change my provider. I selected Comcast and now I am watching without any trouble!
- scizor600, on 08/14/2008, -2/+9The population of the US is 303,824,646 (according to google) you are using global numbers, NBC is a US company and only people living in the US can watch the stream.
You also assume that the number of computers has a direct correlation with population.
The data on number of linux users can never be accurately measured, the results you posted were more then likely taken from a website analyzing its visitors browsers userstrings it depends entirely on the demographic of the site (compare kernel.org to windows update).
Again you are using global numbers linux users are more concentrated in some countries then others.
Dugg Down for flawed argument and cocky reply. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -4/+11Silverlight is a Flash Ripoff and hopefully nobody will ever take it as seriously as Flash.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -4/+11I'll start by hating you for making such a stupid ass comment.
