Mythtv 0.20.2 now available for download
mythtv.org — # The major impetus for this release is the shutdown of TMS Labs; among other changes this adds Schedules Direct support. # The 0.20.2 release notes have a list of the two major and many minor changes since 0.20.1. Since 0.20.1 never made it to a public release you may want to look at the 0.20.1 release notes as well.

* Disabled by default in configure since it no longer works - JeroenVernooij, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2This is nice, especially since 0.21 is taking very long (nofi), and this release is synced with the svn.
- xciton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No, it's not. 0.20.2 is basically 0.20-fixes with a few more fixes put in. It's NOT the current svn trunk.
- Fratz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9A version of KnoppMyth that includes 0.20.2 is expected soon, too.
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2This CAPTCHA system really blows.
- sctwp09, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0'cause Digg's new comment system blows.
- badassninja, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3MythTV kicks everyone's ass!
I mean it strait up bitch slaps Tivo.- geckofiend, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Get back to me when it has cable card support it can't even give Tivo a dirty look, let alone bitch slap it until then.
- dschep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Ok, I haven't really looked, but why the ***** would I want a cable card instead of a normal pci tv tuner (or an hd tuner, if cable card does hd)?
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, 'cuz who would ever want to record something off of HBO-HD? Or Discovery-HD? Or any of the non-local HD stations?
- dschep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@subliminalurge - you can get a pci hdtv tuner that works with Myth.. as I indicated in my previous post.. so whats your point?
- dschep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Ok, I haven't really looked, but why the ***** would I want a cable card instead of a normal pci tv tuner (or an hd tuner, if cable card does hd)?
- refujee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8get back to me when tivo is free
- geckofiend, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Get back to me when it has cable card support it can't even give Tivo a dirty look, let alone bitch slap it until then.
- Lorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Man what are the odds? I updated to the SVN version literally hours before this release because there hadn't been any new releases in nearly a year.
- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Ive tried to install MythTV like, 3 times, all using guides, and have failed miserably with each attempt :S
Is it just me or is it a typically difficult package to setup?- dalittle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3it is not easy if you do it from scratch, but pretty easy if you use one of the distributions (KnoppMyth Mythbuntu MythDora)
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's pretty hard, but it's getting easier.
- MrMuddle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It installs like a dream in Ubuntu 7.04, even easier than KnoppMyth I found. Have you had a look around on any forums for the particular issue you've been having? I'm sure there'd be people on irc.freenode.net #mythtv who'd be able to help with anything more complex than a basic forum trawl can handle. Good luck if you try again.
- kingkilr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Its #mythtv-users the one you have is for the devs.
- MrMuddle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0My bad, sorry. It's been a while since I needed any help with it ;) Ta for the correction.
- kingkilr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Its #mythtv-users the one you have is for the devs.
- Gerz1219, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I was able to get MythTV installed fairly easily, but I found it impossible to get lirc to recognize my MCE USB receiver, and I couldn't get the IR blaster working. Those external modules have a long way to go before they're anything approaching user-friendly. Since MythTV isn't much use without a working remote control or the ability to change channels, I just kind of scrapped the idea and went back to using MCE. Which I was not happy about.
- tommck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Get an IR keyboard and a learning remote. no LIRC needed for input. It's what I do, it's flawless. as far as IR blasting, I use serial port-based DirecTV receivers, so I don't use them.
- kyleandstan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Help me out here....I bailed on Myth after trying numerous times because of the remote and not being able to control my boxes. I have a good learning remote (I also have the hauppage remote and the MCE remote), so that's no problem. I have comcast cable with two motorola DCT-2224's and two pvr250s. Can you tell me how to hook things up so I can control Myth and be able to record two channels at once? A related question: If I have two boxes, both needed serial connections, how do I hook them up to a pc with only 1 physical serial port? If you can tell me how to hook my system up (just the general steps and logic), I'll gladly send you some cash via paypayl! I currently use sagetv with a dual port ir blaster and I really want to move to Myth.
- CJChesterson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have you looked at MediaPortal? If you're not totally opposed to running Windows and want something a little nicer than MCE, I think it does the job.
- ibis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've got myth/lirc running with an MCE USB remote and blasters. I just followed the guide here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Install_Lirc_Feisty
- tommck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Get an IR keyboard and a learning remote. no LIRC needed for input. It's what I do, it's flawless. as far as IR blasting, I use serial port-based DirecTV receivers, so I don't use them.
- brispet1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I find that mythtv works great for me for a few months and then tends to eat it's own tail after that... It is not difficult to fix... but I just like my set-top box to be much more reliable than that... Most problems I've had arise from sql database issues... or network issues... However I've never found it that difficult to setup and I've been using myth since .14, However I've switched to Windows Media Center in Vista Home Premium while it sucks in features and usability as compared to myth, it has been extremely stable.
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What are the odds of getting this working adequately on a P4-M 1.8G, 512MB and Radeon 7500 Mobility 16MB? I know I had a helluva time getting HDTV working without jitters on my Windows XP-based HTPC, spending hours finding the right codec that supported hardware acceleration without overloading the GPU. Add to the fact you need to hack the drivers from ATi to support custom resolutions (1080i TV). Do I really have any chance of getting MythTV to work adequately? Or given ATi driver states on Linux, is it still in the 'too-hard' basket?
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've run myth perfectly well on much less robust hardware than that (although my video card was much better), but that was with standard def.
That rig has no chance of ever being usable for HD content.
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've run myth perfectly well on much less robust hardware than that (although my video card was much better), but that was with standard def.
- zomgfast, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Yay! I can give SchedulesDirect money!
- farksucks, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4MythTV is good if you're running linux, but if you're running a windows box you have two VERY good options: BeyondTV and SageTV
Both cost about 60 bucks, and you can't pirate a warez version because the TV guide update stuff checks your key every time it connects to the main servers. Personally, BeyondTV is what I use and it rocks. You get about 90% of the functionality of TiVo, but with no monthly fee.
I'm using it with a Hauppauge 1600 HDTV card and my directv box.. I get all the local HDTV channels and the included IR blaster controls my directv box which is input into the S-video port on the card. It works, perfectly. I gave up fighting with mythTV a long time ago. Any application that takes 7 days to install and get running is not worth the ***** trouble. BeyondTV was up and running in 30 minutes and it works perfectly. BTW- this is the only piece of software I've actually paid for in the last 10 years. I'm the world's biggest software pirate but this is the one app that is actually worth paying for. (well, also, it wont work if you dont buy it, and it's impossible to pirate, but that's beside the point.. lol)- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Have you tried GB-PVR? It's not as god as MythTV, but it's still a reasonable PVR program for Windows.
- farksucks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3GB-PVR is crap. I tried it, and it sucks. Good effort for freeware, but not polished enough for primetime.
- MrMuddle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Seems like a good feature set for a reasonable price, but don't forget the additional cost of another Windows licence (for those of us who don't pirate software, that is ;) ). Trouble is it's pretty much entirely useless over here in the UK as it doesn't support DVB-T.
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Have you tried GB-PVR? It's not as god as MythTV, but it's still a reasonable PVR program for Windows.
- nextsteposx, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1I am looking for a Media center tv just now, perfect timing.
But I think MythTV is too limited an OS to run as a Media Center Replacement.
Maybe will try Snapstream first.- farksucks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2snapstream = beyondtv just in case anyone was wondering.
seriously, if you have a tuner card download the 21 day trial of beyondtv and give it a shot. it really does rock. sagetv is good too- but its overlay display code isnt as fast as beyondtv's so the image quality isn't quite as good.. other than that they both have pretty much the same exact features. - tommck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7MythTV is not an OS.
- cquilliam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you're looking for just a media center and not something that allows you to stream, record or pause livetv, just do what I did and grab a cheap Xbox off of ebay, mod it (hard or soft), and throw xbox media center on it. After upgrading the hard drive to 250GB, it's perfect for storing all my downloaded tv shows, movies, music, podcasts, etc. All configured with my harmony remote. Seriously, I'd be lost without it now.
Obviously, this isn't a good solution if you're looking to stream live tv through it. - noisymime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2How exactly is it too limited when its got more features than any other system out there? (And its free)
- farksucks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2snapstream = beyondtv just in case anyone was wondering.
- nextsteposx, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2I agree Myth is no where near the level of consumer friendly as say Ubuntu.
Beyong TV i am going to have to try.
Although I am rooting for MythTV to get better... the update infrequency and development makes a choice for .05% of the population.
Also the STEEP learning curve to install it and maintain it. - sctwp09, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4Windows Media Center FTW!!!!!!!
- maino82, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9when the hell are they going to get mythweather fixed? it's been broken for quite awhile now.
- sq377, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It works just fine... I literally just turned to it to check my sanity. It is not broken, though it does have very strange keybinds to set it up.
- t0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Its still broken for me. I get stuff like wind{} or something...
- sq377, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It works just fine... I literally just turned to it to check my sanity. It is not broken, though it does have very strange keybinds to set it up.
- hiro, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Anyone who thinks this is good should try the new Windows MCE, blows everything else away
- brispet1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1MCE edition doesn't come close to Myth in the features category... but for me It has proven to be more stable... Mythtv always gave me a major hassle problem every couple of months... I got tired of my Roommates calling me and saying "dude when are you going to be home Myth is ***** again!"
- gazpachoking, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4My favorite solution for Windows would have to be MediaPortal. It is not only awesome and quite full featured, but completely free and open source. http://www.team-mediaportal.com
- DimensionalPunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, MediaPortal is becoming a very nice piece of work. It has a great team of developers, it's a good example of what open source can accomplish.
- CJChesterson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The only thing I didn't like about MediaPortal is that it requires a pretty decent machine to run smoothly. My 850Mhz clunker runs MythTV just fine, but nearly choked to death trying to run MediaPortal. Other than that, it looked pretty good.
- nicholasomen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2i cant get it to work... sucks
- TrevorBradley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Looks like the new listing service is $15/quarter... and it's not working in Canada yet.
- adt41287, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3there is other listing alternatives... im not sure which ones support canada tho
- xciton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not quite correct. Only OTA broadcasts are not working on Schedules Direct. All the other line up types are working (such as Cable, digtial cable, Satellite).
- adt41287, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2those who have their doubts about MythTV, its alot easier to install in feisty. If you have not tried the install lately give it another try. Takes probably 10-15 minutes to setup, but I encourage you to customize it.
- ibis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yup, I used the "official" guide here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_Feisty and had no dramas.
- vamos, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0MythTV also gives you a free moose knuckle when you're wearing tight pants.
- BigBunion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The new scheduling service is going to be $15 for the first three months. They hope to get the price down to $20 per year, but they need to see how many subscribers they are going to have. It is a non-profit organization run by the MythTV developers. They are just trying to cover their costs.
On the difficulty in installing MythTV- it is reasonably easy to get up and running, but if you have any non-standard hardware, even if it is slightly non-standard, it can be a bear to get it working. I'm using a whole-house RF remote to control my system, and I spent 10 - 20 hours searching through guides, blogs, forums, etc trying to figure out the necessary configurations.
That said, I love MythTV. I can't tell you the last time I actually watched live TV. - spyke77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1ATI AIW (All In Wonder) do not work! See docs under hardware requirement section.
- map777, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1For those having difficulty with MythTV try: Mythdora 4.0 it auto detects and sets up mythtv packages and the database. All you have to do is run mythtv setup
http://g-ding.tv/?q=MythDora - nswint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1BigBunion what whole house RF remote are you using?
- BLKMGK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My hope is LinuXBMC rox. they will likely pick a pretty standard platform like was done with the XBOX and that will make for an easy install. I too have had issues with Myth installs but I keep trying, it's an awesome concept. Hacking an aTV now :-)
- brispet1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Myth is a great program, but in my experience requires to much maintenance to be practical as a set-top box in it's current stage of development... This is only my experience though as I know others who have had trouble free Myth experiences.
- Lambretta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2In my home I have a dedicated MythTV box. Its all we use for TV recording, watching of torrents and live TV viewing and it is *almost* faultless.
Mythdora is great.
- Lambretta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2In my home I have a dedicated MythTV box. Its all we use for TV recording, watching of torrents and live TV viewing and it is *almost* faultless.
- kainalu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1***** the various ms flunkies posting their useless un-asked for, limited *****... if I wanted microsoft software, or thought it was worth my time, I would not be reading about linux software. I couldnt even get the damn ***** working in windows. PERIOD.
Also, its all I use, and following the guide was the usual command cut and paste, read the directions stuff... you know.... common sense? oh, sorry... forgot the audience... /flame
also, my experience is nearly flawless on my dual encoder setup, and I only ssh in about once ~3 months, and that is just to check the logs. the only time it goes down is when I discharge the home made gel-cel truck battery ups and I forget to plug it in 4 days later.
