- TazgodX, on 10/23/2007, -1/+16excellent project, great new mythbuntu mythtv theme!
- Herolint, on 10/23/2007, -1/+16I always like positive comments about Linux, but I don't know what you comment has to do with anything in this particular thread. Mythbuntu is a DVR, MythTV, built on Ubuntu. You probably won't use it as a Linux box and I don't think it is bringing Linux to the people as much as it is bringing MythTV to the people.
- Sparser, on 10/23/2007, -4/+14This is a different version for a different purpose. Do your research before you start b**ching.
- andylockran, on 10/23/2007, -1/+11Can't wait to try this one out :)
- markp93, on 10/23/2007, -4/+14Have any idea what MythTV is?
- laga, on 10/23/2007, -3/+12YAY! Finally it's done :)
- deroderugridder, on 10/23/2007, -6/+15I liked installing (K)Ubuntu but then I just missed my Gentoo too much..
Thumbs up for bringing linux to the people thou.. setting up a linux box was never so easy - inactive, on 10/23/2007, -0/+9Windows MCE? How about 6 different flavors of Vista? Now that's what I call fragmentation.
- rusty0101, on 10/23/2007, -1/+10Just to clarify, you based you decision on whether to try installing Mythbuntu onto a computer on the way your posting was Dugg? And then called it 'support'?
OK, whatever. - laga, on 10/23/2007, -2/+10Guys, sorry for the down time. The site should be back up and running in a very few minutes.
Here's a mirror: http://www.mythbuntu.org.nyud.net/ - sark666, on 10/26/2007, -1/+9How useful is the live cd? I'm assuming it doesn't have built in nvidia/ati binaries so I'm wondering how good the video playback is, and options like tv out I assume wouldn't work, but I could be wrong.
- dwbell, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7As a mythtv user I have to say tvout is only overrated if you have a tv with vga or dvi inputs. For the rest of us it's pretty vital.
- koweja, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7You can install MythTV on an existing distro, which is fine if you use MythTV on the same PC that you do everything else on. However if you are making a standalone DVR/Media Player, you have no need for a full operating system. The Myth distros strip out all of the unnecessary programs and services so the MythTV app runs faster and smoother, and the OS/program files take up less space.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8"support needs to improve before i waste my time with linux"
Support compared to what, Windows? When's the last time you called Microsoft and had a tech help you with something? $20 says never. - nunofgs, on 10/24/2007, -1/+8Mythdora, Mythbuntu... I really don't understand why they can't make 'apt-get install mythtv' do the same thing?
(btw, that wasn't sarcasm) - brickbat, on 10/24/2007, -2/+9the whole myth project needs to learn from mediaportal. XMLTV is 100% pure and natural unadulterated *****. in mediaportal, you say where you are and select your cable provider and it has the frequencies and epg data setup. 1/2 an hour after the o/s is installed, mediaportal is set up and running. There is no reason that cant be done in linux, ffs media portal i gpld too.

We don't even NEED to talk about Vista. - inactive, on 10/23/2007, -2/+8they should work a little harder on keeping their site up.

- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6talk to you when its viable?
ok.. I am talking to you.
why dont you try replacing your desktop with it and stick with it. Its not windows, its not macos.. dont stop using it just because you are used to something else. Its like learning a new language in a new country. If you get tired of it, you cant stop using it because you are used to english. I have used linux since 95 and use it as my only os since about 2000. When I go to windows, I have a bitch of a time getting anything done. The same applies the other way around and thats what you are experiencing. Stop using windows and just use linux. Make yourself do it for a few months if you have the discipline. - tech42er, on 10/23/2007, -0/+5Linux isn't necessarily trying to become a "viable OS for the masses", though individual distros may be. Look, if you like one distro, just use that one, but choice is not a bad thing. The whole point of open source is that anyone can take code and make derivatives of it.

I hear ya! That's much easier...... 8-/ - davidrools, on 10/23/2007, -0/+5digg is not a linux/ubuntu support forum. go there and i'm sure they'll treat you kindly and help you out in whatever you need. And use a different handle in case they browse digg too..digg isn't your biggest fan right now.

top 4 results from a google search for "linux distribution comparison":

http://www.free-soft.org/FSM/english/issue01/ladis ... (good reading to get to know the main distros) - laga, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4www.schedulesdirect.org and some other XMLTV grabbers. I'm assuming you're talking about North America here - the XMLTV project (their software comes with Mythbuntu) provides EPG grabbers for many countries.
- louiedog, on 10/23/2007, -3/+7You obviously don't get it. Also, make sure to tell MS to get rid of Windows MCE because it's confusing windows users and they don't know what to do with it.
- mrmorris, on 10/23/2007, -4/+7A distro made for Mythbusters lovers?
- postaldave, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3what did they come up with for a TV guide since they lost their feed from that one company?
- laga, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4I'm not exactly sure what digging down flamers has to do with (user) support for a linux distribution.
Thanks for playing, though. - zervic, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3I don't suspect "Winbuntu" is on the horizon
- p0tent1al, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3good god diggers, someone talks differently than you and all hell breaks loose.
- andywebb95, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3This sounds like a fun distro!
I look forward to trying it out :) - tgm4883, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3Yep, you can use it to record all your favorite Mythbusters episodes and more!!
- nixfu, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3yet we saw the SAME THING from hordes of people saying "after a few months of using Vista" etc....nice one way street.
- estvir, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Speaking of Vista, is there a way to use this with an Xbox360 (As an Extender)? I'm going to download it and give it a go (Or just install MythTV on my Ubuntu 7.10 install) but there's no way I'll be able to stick with it unless I can use my Xbox360 with it.
Apparently people have made headway with UPnP media servers or something on Linux.. - rusty0101, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3So the community of Mythbuntu users isn't a 100% overlap with Digg. If it were, you wouldn't have to say "Honestly, I'm going to give it a run...."
The Mythbuntu Community is comprised of mostly users who do support each other, and developers who are working with users. It happens that some of us also happen to be part of the Digg community, but we are hardly the entirity of the digg community, and most of us would be far more interested in learning what you discovered about installing and using Mythbuntu on your hardware, than we are in whether you are thinking about it, and think that the opinion of random Digg users should make that decision for you.
Try out the disto. Go to the Ubuntu Forums 3rd Party projects, Mythbuntu pages and let us know how you are doing. We know that the distro doesn't work with every possible component of hardware in existence, but we're willing to work with you if would like some assistance.
Posting an announcement of your intentions on Digg, then bitching because you're being dugg down, and claiming that's an indication of support, is an example of you demonstrating an understanding of the realities of the world about you. Or lack there of. It has nothing to do with Mythbuntu. - bh1nd3r, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Do you mean MythSUSE?
- rusty0101, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Well, I had made the mistaken assumption that you could find those links and references with information I had given, as well as the other postings that have shown up here. I see I was mistaken.
Based upon your posted target, you may want to try the amd64 image. I will admit that I think the i386 image is probably better tested, but that's an opinion, and I won't claim your experience is going to be significantly better with one image or the other.
To download an ISO that you can use to install Mythbuntu onto a computer, you can use one of the following links:
ISO:
i386 http://mythbuntu.org/download/?file=mythbuntu-7.10 ...
amd64 http://mythbuntu.org/download/?file=mythbuntu-7.10 ...
You might find the servers slow or hard to reach at the moment, so a better way to get the iso would be to use a torrent
i386 http://linuxtracker.org/download.php?id=4768&name= ...
amd64 http://linuxtracker.org/download.php?id=4768&name= ...
Now once you have a copy of the ISO, you may be looking for additional help. I'm going to be doing other things the rest of this evening, so you might not be able to get my help any more tonight. If you are having problems, I would recommend using the ubuntu forums to see if any of your questions are already posted or answered. A simple search at http://ubuntuforums.com/ may provide you with the answers you need. If you encounter a situation that goes beyond the questions and answers that are already there, you will need to create an account.
Most of the Mythbuntu issues and discussion will be found in the 3rd party projects area of Ubuntu Forums, under the Mythbuntu project. A direct link to that is http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=301 - kiranaryan, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I am surely gonna try it out. I still installed MythTV on gutsy and opensuse10.3...thanks to their excellent documentation on the website. I would still prefer a distro like Mythbuntu because it is like Ubuntu's Mediacenter edition...You have Gutsy's stability, ease of use and MythTV comes built-in. Users with TV Tuner cards wouldn't like to miss this one out!
- PaulRay, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2The Slogan would be: "Winbuntu, Vista that doesn't suck"
- SuperCow1127, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I think an important difference is that different Linux distributions evolved out of different people wanting different things, whereas different versions of Vista came about so Microsoft could squeeze out more money; there really isn't any argument that cheaper versions of Vista are just stripped down, crippled versions of the most expensive.
- Feej, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3Here's an even easier list for the average user to choose from.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distrib ... - subliminalurge, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Yeah... I'm sure RedHat is right on top of getting their Fedbuntu release out....
Dude, your comment made me roll my eyes back so far it actually hurt..... - TazgodX, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3i used mythdora, and had many problems. i installed mythbuntu and no problems at all.
they both have great tech support, but i highly recommend mythbuntu! - pcpimpster, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3so now i have to sort through myths to find the the perfect os for my htpc.
...
- sv650touring, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I would gladly trade that feature of XBMC for proper DVD/ISO/VIDEO_TS handling. Though it is very true the on-the-fly RAR handling is awesome. I had some seriously damaged RAR files, and even though there were missing/damaged blocks, XBMC played the videos with only occasional, bearable glitches. So never mind...
- dubloe7, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2if this includes them helping me by allowing me to social engineer them into giving me a windows activation key that i 'lost', im in.
- nixfu, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3>options like tv out
TV Out is way overrated at this point with most TVs now having VGA or DVI inputs. -
