- osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -5/+104Last time I checked Digg.com was nerd central. We love Linux here. Yes someone will get flamed if they make a statement like " Ubuntu will be on every computer in the world in two months ". Other then that I think most of us would like to see Linux used by a lot more people.
- corevette, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44you do know that your posting this on digg right
you might want to go make some new friends on this site: http://forums.microsoft.com/
....you'll find plenty - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37"nor should you ever use the plural of the word 'internet'"
Haha, I bet you're one of those guys that only knows about *this* internet. Little do most people know, there are actually 5. The one you're on now was originally called the inter-porn-net. Obviously, this name is a little unwieldy, so it was shortened to just 'internet'. The other 4 internets (the most popular of which is the inter-cheese-net) contain almost exclusively non-pornographic sites, and are thus quite limited in size. - corevette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32you might want to try installing mp3 support and/or ndiswrapper/madwifi
btw: you should never give up that easily...especially with such a great Ubuntu IRC channel, nor should you ever use the plural of the word 'internet' - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38http://removinglinux.ytmnd.com/
- SaxxonPike, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31Goes to show that Ubuntu is a Linux anyone can use. 'twas my first distro as well. And well recieved coming from Windows.
- hottyson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20My dad was teaching a middle school special-ed class. He asked me to set up his computers for his school. Afterwards, the district told my father to remove the machines because they had Microsoft Windows on them and the district was tired of lawsuits for unlicensed Microsoft software being used in the district.
No problem!
I erased the hard drives and installed SimplyMEPIS.
Everybody was extremely happy and the students got to see a free OS first hand! - srg13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20"I got MP3 support up in Ubuntu fairly quickly, but it's flipping retarded that the most ubiquitous digital format ever doesn't work out of the box."
mp3 is patented by Fraunhofer IIS I think, and if it was supported out of the box, they would have to pay licensing fees. But I think that patent only applies in the USA. In that case they should have a USA version and a "Rest of the world" version of Ubuntu. I doubt anyone would go for the stripped down version though, regardless of where they lived. - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Why do I never see "Nobody wants to read X" or "People only want to read Y" or "Nobody cares about Z" comments which are actually true?
The ones I see always seem to be a case of "How can I lend my dismissive comment a cheap, momentary illusion of credibility?"
I was going to say "nobody wants to read comments that..", but hit a recursion error. Nobody wants to read comments that logically eat themselves. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Wow, a user named "StankButt" trolling. There's some news for you.
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Nope. I am not just targeting the home user.
It makes much more sense to deploy Linux workstations for a skilled sysadmin, from a practical and a financial standpoint. You can PXE boot install a Linux OS in half an hour on a relatively new PC, share out home folders with a kerberized NFS system, and administer thousands of clients using free services that you can configure to your hearts' desire. Sure, it hasn't had as much time to evolve as the monopoly platform, but if you've ever used the GUI on ubuntu, I'll put it this way, my mom was able to find her way around, pretty good for it being around for the time it has. Windows has been around for almost 30 years. I cannot begin to imagine how mind boggling Linux is going to become in 5 years.
Infrastructure based on open standards will almost always prevail over an infrastructure that is closed and unfixable and requires MS developers to release patches on their own schedule instead of millions of other sysadmins and developers who are all in the same boat working for the same common goal. - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19It's always wonderful to hear success stories and new people discovering Linux. I hope it goes on well for him and his iMacs, and of course, his students. Maybe they can even learn a few things about computers?
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Yeah, if only ubuntu had the same drivers and used the same codecs as SuSE and Freespire, and could run the same apps as them. Oh, wait...
*sigh* - Wonderkind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is good news for taxpayers. Some schools would have gone to the state or county government for money to buy new computers and software. This was innovative, saved a bunch of old computers from the trash and cost nothing. Thumbs up.
It's small inroads like this one that will eventually turn the tide. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11automatix2 or simple ubuntu ?
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11imacs are not and never will be multimedia powerhouses, they were pieces of ***** to start with and still are better off used as boat anchors than as any type of production machine. besides that when was the last time you saw multimedia classes at a highschool - never.
It was for a writing class - they needed to use a word processor and surf the net. Not use photoshop to manipulate a 1200dpi poster. - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11GUI moving around all cute doesn't make a better O/S.
In all the O/S's i run i have the minimum essentials so the machine runs at max speed. adding all those visual affects just distracts you and slows the machine down. Aero included.
btw linux does have cental management, packet distribution, and fully scriptable control over everything. Arguing that windows makes a better server or rolls out faster just shows your ignorance and lack of research.
Keep believing what you were taught at MS University though and I'll keep rolling out secure lamp servers in under 60 minutes including install and transport to the location to be networked. - diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Schools with tight budgets will find Linux a nice alternative. Codec problems, are easily solved by anyone with a little Linux experience. Linux use in schools will only increase.
- kirby9058, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Great article, it's awesome to see Linux in the classroom and to see old computers be recycled.
- ajifans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Suse linux as in Open Suse does not have MP3 out the box, as it's a proprietary format. You have to add it yourself for legal reasons.
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Digg is being filled by iditots now..
- hockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well my first linux experience was great....and I still love it...and I've used it for years...and I have a BS in CS.
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18Linux is going to take over. It's only a matter of time.
You can't close the source for a means to an end, such as pavement...can't hide the recipe for it. I can understand closing source for the end, but not the means.
So how to sell it?

What do you think about that Aeroglass? - TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8""""Yeah this right here is why its *****, basic modern functions and you have to install crap for them.""""
Does Windows come with DIVX MOV and XVID support? No. You have to download them. OGG support? Pretty basic.
Literally, you copy paste ONE line and press enter and you can play MP3's. 1 more line copy pasted you have DIVX, XVID and DVD support. That is easier than Microsoft.
I actually perfer Fedora Core 6. I wish they did have a non-free version like Freespire does though, where MP3 is supported and so is all the other nonfree stuff. They can do it, but then the disc is no longer open source. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Maybe "None" is the name of the iMac that he left OS 9 on, and either is the name of the person to whom he was writing the article.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10yeah, it's tricky. I couldn't google it cos the internets were unavailable, kind of a catch 22.
- elpepe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6damn small linux?
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Somehow I get buried, I pointed out a grammar error in an article written by an english teacher?
- ordminute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes I agree. I finally left OS X for Ubuntu when the obvious strategy for hardware lock-in became tedious, there was nothing wrong with my current G4 PB other than the fact Apple was leaving it in the dust. And here was Jobs telling everyone how superior PPC was and how dirty and boring Intel was a couple of years earlier. I believed him. Remeber those 'Idiot Inside' stickers?
I should've switched to Linux earlier; no OS is a modern OS without package management (and don't talk to me about those feeble attempts called Fink or Darwin Ports). Apple really needs to get this (and decent 3D performance) sorted out before I'd consider switching back. As a long time Mac user, this is the first time I feel like my computer is actually my own.
/me waves goodbye to Apple. - NoobieDoobieDo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Linux has come a long way in a short amount of time. Only a few years ago things were not as easy.
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6if i 'were' to
- intelmole, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Maybe it's because there's a mistake in your post complaining about a mistake from another.
Maybe it's the holier-than-thou nature of it all.
Maybe, just maybe, it's because what you're saying is really irrelevant. - tcquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@BlackadderIII
The reason you never see "No one wants to read X" comments that are actually true is that you only click on stories you want to read, thereby proving the assertion incorrect.
"No one wants to read X" is basically the Schrödinger comment. - Stemp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Damn Small Linux on a iMac ?
- slowmotiony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mine was negative as well, i uninstalled it after 5 hours. I might consider returning to it if a x-fi driver is released.
- geekitechture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@brajeshwar:
Oh goodness, you promoted Newsvine on Digg. That's a horrible faux pas: Newsvine is a social news site like Digg but you can submit both links *and* original articles to them; the articles are published full-length on their homepage, and you can make money off of ads that run alongside them. Why you don't want to promote that here: it might drive Digg's traffic away, and linking to those articles is like linking to blogs; just *so not done* on Digg.
Just kidding...Great idea! You have to wonder if you're sending away traffic, though. - cmp1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm using Xubuntu right now on my P4 1.8 Ghz with 1.5 GB RAM, and it runs AMAZINGLY! I like XFCE because it's both easy to use and easy on resources.
For MP3 support and other things, in case you don't know...
http://www.getautomatix.com
That's the Automatix program. It lets you download codecs and other nifty programs with just a few clicks. Works only with the U/K/Xubuntu family and Mepis. This nifty program is much easier to use than searching forums and other help sites for info how to DL the codecs.
About the article: I think it's a great idea to start introducing Linux into the school environment. Microsoft is basically killing itself slowly in the OS market. Kids should be learning about the alternatives to the evil corporation in Redmond (Redmond has a good corporation too, it's NOA). - thewump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not earth shattering, but GREAT. I'm tempted to try to get a group of locals together ( Denver ) and do a service for non-profits and schools who have mountains of such hardware donated to them all the time.
- JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When I came across that I had to go back to the top thinking he said something about being an English teacher.
- Marthinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@MackPrime
I suggest a visit to the doctor, there is medication for ADD. - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ underdog5004 - 15 Hours & 20 Minutes to the front page is not a record... but it DID make it.
- BobWoodshed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love Linux and Xubuntu is pretty damn nice, but it really makes me wonder what the hell he was trying to do in OSX that made CNN.com crash. I have an old 333mhz G3 iMac running Panther with 128mb of RAM and it seems to work just fine for music, chatting, Office, and surfing. I've never had an app crash and haven't restarted the thing since I last booted it up in August. On the other hand I've never tried to install Xubuntu on it to compare, so maybe I'll give it a shot.
- Valikarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Besides xubuntu, Arch Linux is another distro that's antique-friendly :)
http://www.archlinux.org/ - Somniis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No one is forcing you to read it or comment on it.
- cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4welcome to my block list
- ScooterDMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hi. My name is Ryan. I am the author of this story from Newsvine. Thanks for all the comments and Diggs. You make me feel important.
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If he fixed the link to ubuntuforums, that would be even better.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@slowmotiony
Supposedly creative is releasing a closed-source linux driver for X-Fi in Q1 07. - coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"if they missed the overnight reboot."
That's the thing, Linux never needs to be rebooted for any application updates. The only times I ever really need to reboot my personal server are either for kernel updates or if I want to modify the physical hardware. Updates to the server software go in seamlessly without fuss or pointless rebooting. Even driver installations don't require a reboot, just use insmod or modprobe commands, All of which can be done over SSH without sacrificing precious uptime. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Many many schools have recieved donations of dozens of iMacs. The things are almost antiques now, and they made alot of them.
