- borez, on 09/02/2008, -3/+52Mr. Stephen Fry ( or Sir Stephen Fry as he really should be known... Queenie take note ) is one of the most well read and knowledgeable humans on the face of the planet, if he says it's good... then it probably is.
- zcat, on 09/02/2008, -2/+24That's a pretty good explanation about what 'free software' actually means for people who aren't geeks. I plan to play this pretty often over Software Freedom Day for anybody who's still confused about the whole gratis/libre thing.
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+22That Macbook runs Ubuntu. He was sitting next to me in a cafe in London yesterday!
- pitdog, on 09/03/2008, -2/+20Stephen Fry is a genius actor, can do comedy and drama and everything he does is just phenomenal. I really miss the Fry and Laurie show...
- Stonekeeper, on 09/02/2008, -7/+24Steve Fry is awesome. Awesome i tell you!
- energyblue, on 09/03/2008, -1/+17Buried for 'Steve'... its STEPHEN. ;)
- wallclimber, on 09/02/2008, -2/+17I just finished watching it.
Chocolatey Good! - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+15Stephan Fry is the man!

- DanAshcroft, on 09/03/2008, -0/+12Fantastic, Stephen Fry 'tells it like it is', see also his blog http://stephenfry.com/blog/?p=39
- chicaneuk, on 09/03/2008, -2/+14I also highly recommend his PodGrams which you can download from his official site @ http://www.stephenfry.com/podcasts/index.html
Was listening to the most recent episode last night and literally laughing out loud at certain points! - Krissam, on 09/02/2008, -1/+12Yea, Happy birthday gnu you!
just hope we can get some more oss, because that's the way to go! - maninalift, on 09/03/2008, -0/+10Of quick time!
- michaelenger, on 12/20/2008, -1/+10I concur with both of these points.
- Stavrosian, on 09/03/2008, -0/+8He's a very good author too. Bastard.
- Mesimeris, on 09/03/2008, -2/+10The only thing that could make this more awesome would be Hugh Laurie walking in and diagnosing Fry with Lupus.
- boogie606, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7download it and associate the file with vlc...
- norfolk13, on 09/02/2008, -3/+10Happy Birthday GNU!!!
- alextryie, on 09/03/2008, -1/+8GNU, I can't believe it, you're all grown up!
- mcrules, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7Wonderful. The man makes this video for us all to enjoy and discuss, then I read his blog and find a new series of QI is in the works.. magic!
- Meesher, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6 Second that. I recently became a fan of Jeeves and Wooster. Cool to see that he has his own blog.
- JoJoMoMo, on 09/02/2008, -2/+7http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dcxtEKShXA
- MrARPA, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5It speaks volumes for Stephen Fry that he was happy to donate his time to promote GNU. I wish more people with high media profiles would show his insight and open societie's eyes to the software revolution that's going on right under their noses.
- unitedkronos, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5With their polar opposites of intelligence, I doubt it.
- damagedone666, on 09/03/2008, -1/+6Pics of you being conceived or it didn't happen!
- bawpcwpn, on 09/03/2008, -1/+6Stephen Fry is my idol.
- jamshid, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5Btw, the in-browser video appears to be using Java, not Adobe's Flash. I was surprised GNU would use Java, but I guess they're fine with it now that Sun freed it: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/java-trap.html.
Btw, while not as buggy as they used to be, I still say java applets suck. Got NullPointerException and buggy behavior when I switched tabs, but I am on a Mac/Safari so I guess I'm asking for it. The downloaded video played nicely in VLC.
Anyway, the presentation is great, Fry of course does a perfect job. Nice to see GNU polishing its image and trying to reach out to non-techies. GNU is needed now more than ever: http://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/5-reasons-to-av ... - zumpiez, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Reminding us all why we love free software so much!
- retr0grade, on 09/02/2008, -3/+7This is actually very helpful- sending it to my mom!
- ToadLeg, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Instead of watching the Flash thing, download it. It's in the new open source Theora video codec.
- UcIc, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4For a bit more detail on the history of the GNU Project/Linux, a great documentary is "Revolution OS". It interviews many of the key players in the creation of what Linux is today (Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman, Michael Tiemann and a few others)
I had to watch it for my Operating Systems class last semester and it's a great watch if you have a spare hour or so.

- Bex5, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4I can't even tell you how much I love Stephen Fry. He's such a gorgeous person.
- Krissam, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3you realize that releasing it as a flash movie would go against the entire principle of free software? flash is a proprietary format.
As is mp3, divx, xvid..... - Mesimeris, on 09/03/2008, -1/+4Try Google Chrome :D
- mickstephenson, on 09/03/2008, -4/+7File associations are the responsibility of your non free operating system, idiot.
- abbathdoom, on 09/03/2008, -1/+4Urg! As others have said the video playback with the java is horrible. But I guess it goes against everything GNU stand for to release the video in a format that is actually watchable, since they are all proprietary.
The sooner that totally open source BBC video codec gets adoption the better. - unitedkronos, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3BBC? That's the first time I've heard of that codec. Have any more info?
- abbathdoom, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3I think comparing it to science is about as straight forward as it gets, the whole plumbing analogy was a bit meh. Just tell them that in the same way you want someone to share the cure to cancer with the world you also want people to share better code. Simple.
- Joh739, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3Happy Birthday to GNU and all involved!!!!
Gona ask my mom to make that cake now :P - Krissam, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2you are allowed to charge for free software.
- zcreem, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2but mac is hardly open source, my god windows is more open than mac.
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2@donutguy, you do know they have the links to VLC player on the page and say to download it if you cant view the video dont you?
- dixhuit, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the message, the cause and the ever charming presence of Mr Fry (surely that should be Sir Fry by now?).
Happy Birthday.
However, a floundering 2 out of 10 for the lamest video player I have ever used (infuriating, sticky, no visual feedback, ugly, buggy *****). - MrARPA, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Agreed, I have the official DVD next to me - one of the few DVDs I've ever bought.
- Krissam, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Works fine both on my ubuntu, and windows box? so way to fail at life DonutGuy
- lingk, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2you do know that you can run GNU/Linux on a mac, and that the mac OS is built on top of freeBSD?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GNU! - zhooshy, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2I assume he means Dirac, which is already playable in Flash 9+ if you like proprietary crap that crashes your browser and refuses to open in two tabs at the same time now for some reason. You can encode and play Dirac already
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirac_%28codec%29#Lic ...
http://diracvideo.org/download/dirac-research/ffmp ... - unitedkronos, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Thanks.
- Krissam, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Yea, linking to an open source player like VLC might've been a good idea.
Because that might have some people download a piece of opensource software and try it out, only to realize that VLC kicks the ***** out of WMP -
