- Bicep, on 08/15/2009, -1/+16Dear Congressman,
while trying to catch up on viewing some of the speeches from the recent Democratic National Convention Committee website, to include speeches from President Obama, Vice President Gore, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, I was absolutely appalled to find that I am being BLOCKED from viewing the video content because I am using the Linux operating system! The DNCC video site is here: http://gallery1.demconvention.com
And if you go to the above site with Linux - you will not be able to see the videos.
Is America no longer a free country, that I am not able to view elected officials in speeches on the Internet because I choose to use a different operating system than Windows or Mac OSX?
I purchased my computer from Dell Computer Corporation(just like many Americans), and my computer came PRELOADED with the Ubuntu Linux Operating System. See here for the purchase link: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/u ...
How can it be justified that I be blocked from viewing my leadership just because I use Linux?
I have recently attempted to contact the fine people at movenetworks.com, to let them know that they should provide their media player for Linux. I've seen comments that say they are making a media player for Linux but the comments are over a year old!!
The Internet was built upon OPEN WEB STANDARDS that have enabled it to advance to the scale that it is currently... By using products that purposely block certain operating systems (e.g., Linux), companies like movenetworks are breaking the Internet.
Please Sir, spread the word around Washington that the movenetworks player MUST NOT be used to deliver video content to your constituents because it does not work with 1/3 of the 3 major Operating Systems (Linux)!!
Other media players such as the Adobe Flash Player, while closed source and proprietary, still do the right thing by providing their application for Linux/Windows/Mac/and even some cell phones.
Our government MUST NOT use the proprietary players like the move networks player that delivers the content from the DNC website at: http://gallery1.demconvention.com because it purposely BLOCKS LINUX.
Please have someone do something about this ASAP, so that I can view the videos at the DNCC site. Please also help to ensure these types of "lack of open media" problems are not allowed to creep into our government's media delivery.
Thank you.
American Citizen - Bicep, on 08/15/2009, -0/+10The problem is the movenetworks player, which interestingly enough has been injected with millions in $$ by MSFT in a "strategic" partnership. The movenetworks player is also used for full episodes delivery on ABC/FOX/Oprah
movenetworks player DOES NOT work in Linux!
But you don't have to take my word for it.... checkout these articles that say the same thing:

http://digg.com/linux_unix/fox_network_does_not_su ... - Bicep, on 08/15/2009, -0/+9I know, the DNCC speeches are a bit old already... but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be allowed to watch them with my GNU/Linux machine! Besides, steps should be taken to ensure this type of Linux blocking nonsense is not allowed to continue. Write your congressman, tell your friends, break a friggin Window... it's time to get it on!!
- warp99, on 08/15/2009, -0/+6Before some smart ass starts yelling about market share they do have an Apple PPC version, which has less market share worldwide then Linux. For Flying Spaghetti Monster's sake Adobe even has a 64-bit plugin for Linux, but for some unknown reason there is no plugin from Move Networks for any version of Linux including the Smartphone market?
So it doesn't matter how much you bitch there's a hidden agenda so I say forget about them. Go somewhere else or bitorrent if you really need to see something from Fox or ABC. - Bicep, on 08/15/2009, -0/+3You might check your information on that one.... Notice it says to install silverlight (and that might work...possibly with 'Mono' in Linux), but the movenetworks player does not install on Linux (not even in WINE).
If you could test and post the specific steps you have done to make it work - that would be great.
The problem is the movenetworks player, which also serves content for ABC/FOX/Oprah/etc.
It's the same problem as this article: http://digg.com/linux_unix/ABC_Stops_supporting_Li ... - Mactard, on 08/15/2009, -1/+3Its all about transparency, you see. Its for your own good just like healthcare. The government knows what they are doing.

Now it's time to Let ABC and FOX know to switch their full episodes over to this hulu player on their website... As opposed to the MSFT funded MoveNetworks player on there that is NOT Linux compatible (although they say it is coming.. bet it will be faster now).
Contact abc here:

Contact Fox via email here: askfox(_at_)fox(_dot_)com
Tell ABC and FOX and Oprah about this article and let them know to use a client that is friendly to Linux users. - Bicep, on 08/19/2009, -0/+1There's now some "unofficial" "we're working on a Linux player" words from a movenetworks employee here:

Another site that doesn't work with Linux because of the move networks player (although they provide alternate access):
http://www.byutv.org/streaming/Default.asp?style=p ...
Linux users need to come together on this or we are going to get blocked even further from online streaming TV.
Submit your complaints to the FCC / DOJ - Antitrust / your Congressman / whitehouse (dot ) gov / local media providers / etc.
If anyone has another way to attack this problem - by all means, please comment.
THIS ISSUE IS HIGH PRIORITY because it is a potential barrier for people to switch to Linux from other operating systems. - smacksaw, on 08/16/2009, -1/+1This is as stupid as the CEO from Whole Foods writing an op-ed piece in the NY Times basically calling socialists bad. I guess he thinks his customers are stocking up on organic food for their militia and their end of days bunker.
- kev717, on 08/15/2009, -3/+1Linux + User Agent Switcher plugin - works perfectly as long as you have something compatible with Silverlight installed!
