- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63I wounder how long until someone screws up and rm -rf it all
- wreckingcru, on 10/12/2007, -6/+55This is brilliant. Stunning, really.
I'm really, really happy to see these practical strides that Linux is making. Even if this particular tip is useful for technophiles. - WorldGroove, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48All kinds of Linux commands? grep, find, ls, cp, mkdir, mkext2fs(lol!).
.....and now, of course, can I have diggfs? - drstock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Direct link instead of crappy blog: http://wikipediafs.sourceforge.net/
- dattaway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Why not?
Next: googlefs, diggfs, and why not the whole internet with httpfs? Now with tabbed command line autocompletion. - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Sweeet
I've always wanted to defrag my wiki...
(for those of you that need it... yes thats a joke.) - Onwlyix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37Wow. It's amazing what you can do with linux.
- utcursch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26It uses FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace):
http://fuse.sourceforge.net/
There are several other interesting projects that use FUSE:
http://fuse.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/FileSystems - mercano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26You /should/ get an IO or permissions error; normal wikipedia users can only create and modify files, they can't delete them. If you are logged in with admin permissions, all bets are off.
- SNACKeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24"It is thus possible to use a real text editor to view and edit articles." - for frequent editors, this is a big win.
- Toshibi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28Almost as cool as the G-Mail FS. Yes, you can mount G-Mail as a file system under Linux.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22You can do this kind of thing with Windows, but Microsoft still charges for the file system SDK. It's a shame because it would be a good thing for Windows if you could get it free. MS is going to have to be more open if they want to stop their decline.
- uzytkownik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Yes you can - provide you can program in any language which has wrapper over fuse (C, .Net, ruby...)
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17You mean http://httpfs.sourceforge.net/ ?
- SwissCamel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Anyone know where this Mount Wikipedia is? I've looked in my atlas and can't find it anywhere.
- rik83, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18..and under Windows, and under Mac OS X.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GmailFS

Or you can keep trying to be a smartass... - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9A lot linux projects aren't meant to catch on with most users. They aren't created because they're likely to be useful to a large number of people.
They're frequently the result of intense need by a small group of people, or just because the developer thinks it'd be really cool to do. This is probably the later.
Some people's software projects are a lot like case mods. Most people look at it and think "Well, that's kind of cool, but it's not really useful". And they're not really supposed to be useful. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You might have more luck with this map:
http://xkcd.com/c256.html - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Mac OSX can use FUSE modules, thanks to google releasing their macfuse project.
http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/ - riceweb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Ooh, and once the minimal work necessary to port this to Mac OS X is done, you'll be able to use Spotlight to search Wikipedia.
- Ben174, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just installed it played with it. It only retrieves articles that you request. So if you ls your wiki mount, it will be empty. But if you cat /mnt/wiki/Japan , it will retrieve the Japan article and output it. Now, if you ls /mnt/wiki/ there will be a Japan 'file' in there.
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Like they say on their page, it's in Debian unstable and Ubuntu universe, an apt-get away.
- Scarfy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13He said "casual browser." I don't think the casual browser has much use for all kinds of linux commands.
Go on... bury me for pointing out that not everyone is a fluent linux-user. - johlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So when you grep something, the whole Wikipedia is searched through?
- kre8designs, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13A very cool idea, but I don't see it catching on for most users. I agree that it is an excellent method to allow hardcore editors to access the records, but that vast majority of users could not care less. Again, a very cool idea, something that I personally hope catches on.
- PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9http://richard.jones.name/google-hacks/gmail-filesystem/gmail-filesystem.html
Or you can keep trying to sound smart... - DarkDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Not that I dislike it, I do think it is a wonderful idea, but wont this make trolling Wikipedia much easier and allowing even the most technically uninclined the ability to write a simple bash script to repetatly deface many articles... =[
- hardran3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3or just use macfuse and this...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3WorldGroove, let that idea come to reality! That would be "awesome". (I'am talking about "diggfs", in case you didn't know/notice.)
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To be able to grep all of wikipedia, your system would have to fetch all of wikipedia. Which is several gigabytes.
And you'd have to do that pretty much every time you grep, since you don't know what someone else has edited. - theNthDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is pretty cool... I am going to have to set it up soonish. I once tried using mediawiki as a project-book system on my local computer, it worked out OK except that it wasn't easy enough to import hordes and hordes of content. Maybe this will help. I have always wanted to be able to tag and categorize the files on my local computer ... I wonder if the interwiki read/write feature works with it too :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3and now you're going to get buried again
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does Windows have a FUSE implementation? I don't think the Windows FS is robust enough to properly allow this sort of thing. The advantage of a WikiFS is the ability to use the standard FS tools on it in some meaningful way (like using ls and grep to search for articles). You could write an application to do the same but would have to reimplement nearly everything.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hm, how is it organized? Do the Wikipedia categories work as folders and subfolders in it? That would be pretty cool in that case.
- hdante, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A bot that does this without fuse is not that hard to code. Wikipedia with or without fuse is subject to vandals the same way.
- shinda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh that it would, the idea never even crossed my mind until you mentioned it. A for loop an echo statement and read the entries from a dictionary file and you're good to go, 3 lines or less and you got yourself a wikipedia bomb.
- forty4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To dattaway...There is already a googlefs, its really handy actually.
- jaywee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But unfortunately I can't visit Wikipedia 'cause of our great GFW!
- Ulvund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can make anything into a file system. There are crazier ideas than this!
For all those who want to experiment with FUSE and have poor understanding of file systems:
It is not well documented. - F3MW9Z, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It is already at the ubuntu ff repository. Don't waste time searching .debs at google, as I did.
- Nanite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Hmmm... WebFS. I like the sound of that.
No need to use google when you can use your own PC to search the web. - ninfudo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Doesn't WebDAV already have this capability?
- rajaal1977, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Ingenious idea. I use OS X at home, so the nearest comparable software for me is "Pathway."
- oscrmyer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1While this is a good idea. It really is totally pointless for about 99% of people that use the site.
- Scarfy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Note to self: don't click submit unless you are 100% sure you'll never need to change your choice in words.
- altacocos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0
EbilPhish: excellent XD
mercano: obvius :/ - zedigger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Don't forget big fat geeky PENGUINS....
