- Cbaar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Good article, but torsmo/conky is missing (for X11; conky is a fork of the now inactive torsmo; reads in a configuration file and draws "progress" bars and text with the specified content at the specified locations;
see http://conky.sourceforge.net/) - rjregenold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Your link had a trailing ')'. Here it is without: http://conky.sourceforge.net/
- thejart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2anyone for conky screenshots?

It's very impressive, and certainly refreshing to use after being stuck with top. - zeger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thanx! didnt know about htop. great tool!
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2would one include Cacti or RRDTool-like tools in this category?
- reclusivemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or Nagios! Gotta be the killer server monitoring application;

- reclusivemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg down above, cookie trouble!
- thejart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree, with all of those options for system monitoring how did they overlook conky?
- FlakPyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1monitorix is a nice web based tool as well
http://www.monitorix.org/ - s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1friggin awesome...
easiest way for me to install under SUSE (and any other distro really) was:
smart install - reclusivemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Nagios? http://nagios.org/
This has to be the killer server monitoring app. If only for the 3D server diagrams... - scottjl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks for the great article. just added htop and conky to my toolbox!
- xtlosx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rrdtool and cacti are real nice if you want a graphical web based interface to statistics, although it can get information on just about everything on a machine..
There is always the other option, write your own to suite your needs.. I recently wrote a nice perl script that grabs information from clients, free memory, load average,amount of logged in users, and presents it through a console based script.. all MySQL based.. not too hard, but can make it do what YOU want it to do...
htop is AWESOME :) - zeger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0by cntrxfrstrm:

How's that? Are you running KDE or what? I have both WinXP and Ubuntu installed on the same machine and believe me when I say, Ubuntu is faster than XP!
Sure, if you run KDE instead of Gnome on a low-end computer, it will definitely have performance drops. But that aswell can be fixed by stopping unnecessary services and tweaking KDE a bit. In a near future, that's about to change. Remember me when this will happen:
LINUX WILL be faster than XP (already is than Vista), no matter what desktop environment is running !
Let's all hope that Linux will continue to develop at this high rate so in a year or two, every game and application will run on Linux and in a few years, each of those games and apps will have a Linux version as well.
Cheers! - varlog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nmon is a nice CLI tool
