Weather, Email alert, IP addresses, Currently playing, not to mention system stats... and all displayed in a completely customized way. It can really make your desktop look cool too.

I monitor several Ubuntu based servers simultaneously via VNC, and having a tool like Conky on the desktop gives me a quick at-a-glance overview of the status - things like Network, Drive and CPU usage graphs. It definitely takes some tweaking of the .conkyrc file to get it right - I spent probably a good couple hours finessing my layout to present the information. It's just a handy tool to have.

But there are many easier to use applets and desklets that display your system information and don't require any terminal work. Right-click on one of your panels and select "Add To Panel" and you'll find a few that you don't even have to install.
Conky takes more work, but the payoff is you can make it do almost anything you want, look almost any way you want it to look, and it uses next to no system resources. - derbloodlust, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Certainly. I would have posted it earlier, but I was on a different computer. To clarify why it shows my Root and Vista partitions to be exactly the same, I must have powered down after Vista locked up on me, and the NTFS partition doesn't mount properly in linux when I shut down dirty from Vista.
