- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5it's not microsoft's urge, it's mtv, ms simply has integration with it and other music services.
so, this should be MTV's Urge rips off linux icons especially so since the example ( http://www.urge.com/switch/index.jhtml?section=gear ) is mtv's site; lol, you lemmings will go to any lengths to bash microsoft.
and lol @ the example of the 'blatant copy' .. it's just a trendwhore gel effect and photoshop kid can do; like i said, desperate to bash microsoft. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4remember the kde theme which directly copied the vista min/max/close buttons ? oh irony.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5hang on, you're trying to pin kde as the creators of the sort of 'quick search' box we've seen for many years in thousands of apps ?
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3so, are they inspired or copied ? in the design world there is a thin line between the 2.
unless it is a 100% copy it cannot/shouldn't be called a 'rip' though being 'over inspired' is frowned upon.
also, this is just some useless gel effect anyone can do by following a photoshop tutorial, hardly a 'blatant rip.' - jpwillms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah,
Whatever. I don't think it was a flat out diss to MS. I think it was just a in-bed-with-linux observation. Regardless of whether it was a diss, this story could simply highlight that MS's and MTV's new venture has been inspired from linux GUI. That is big news. OSX/Linux UI has made a strong impact on web interface -- and I think this is no exception. This is news -- I don't think you dudes should be so crazy mad to criticize.
And, to keep on beating a dead horse -- I think anytime mainstream commercial is inspired by open source it is a big deal. OS is still making huge strides these days, even though the hype is all over web 2.0.
'Keep it real'
J @ sumolabs - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"OSX/Linux UI has made a strong impact on web interface"
how ?
you speak of some unified linux gui, there isn't one, there are popular ones such as gnome & kde so please, use proper wording.
i highly doubt that their new venture was inspired by A linux gui, i'm certain when they were planning urge 'use a similar button to one found in kde with a generic gel effect' was a large part of their plan.
all this is is a designer being lazy, nothing more, and it certainly doesn't mean that microsoft is copying them at all.
a SINGLE DESIGNER does NOT represent microsoft in its entirety. - actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Listen up, and listen good.
It's not a rip-off -- of any user interface. It's the gelly button look. It's a trend. It's taken a hold of the public eye and gained in popularity because it translates so well to the web -- which has become a part of the daily lives of many Americans.
Don't believe me? Look at the recent branding efforts of Netscape (http://www.netscape.com/) or Macromedia's Studio Icon Set (now owned by Adobe) or even Amp'd Mobile (http://get.ampd.com/index.php).
Apple and KDE (specifically the Crystal theme) helped make it popular, but neither hold the rights to the original idea. It's been around for a long, long time.
There's nothing being borrowed other than a current trend. Don't hate MTV, Microsoft, Apple, KDE, Netscape, Macromedia, or Amp'd -- their designers are just producing what people nowadays expect to see.
No Digg. - JLTB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True, the gelly look is very popular amoung designers. My issue is that the icon they use for the main branding is extremely similar in shape and design to the down icon in the Crystal SVG pack (see original post, now with image: http://www.projectopus.com/node/4172).
Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying they shouldn't or aren't allowed to do this.
I just find the doublespeak interesting. ;-)
PS: It may not be clear because of the different nick, i wrote the original post on www.projectopus.com. - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They also have a quick search (or filter) just like a certain popular KDE player ;-)

I guess the GPL doesn't apply to Microsoft ... - jpwillms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Classic. I do see the similarities!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wanna be more shocked???
Check out their new LOGOUT/LOCKSCREEN buttons on the new start menu.... they are 100% DIRECT COPIES of the buttons used on the KDE Kicker for many years now.
Total and complete ripoffs down to the exact same drawings, shapes and colors.
