- schestowitz, on 10/19/2007, -17/+173These ads are illegal here in the UK. Microsoft has resorted to tactics that show it is miserable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_lie
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -9/+119 Sure wish they were illegal here.(USA)
- refreshers, on 10/18/2007, -13/+90Lol thats funny, considering the government was hacked by the Chinese. I bet that wouldn't have happened if they used linux.
- Fracture98, on 10/18/2007, -7/+80Chill. They wouldn't be doing anything at all if Linux wasn't a threat to their bottom line.
Anyone considering Linux is smart enough to see through the BS. Those not considering Linux might just be caused to think, "Hmm... why is Microsoft so concerned about this Linux...". Win-win. - damentz, on 10/10/2007, -12/+68Considering that 98% of Windows users have some sort of malware (spyware, trojans, adware, viruses), whos risking what now?
I think Windows has more statistics showing how BAD it is. - superyounan1, on 10/19/2007, -6/+55microsoft is smelling which way the wind is blowing. Ads like this show their angst, makes me smile :)
its ok microsoft, i'll keep a partition open for you... for those 4 occasions a year i might need windows. - Avor, on 10/18/2007, -9/+50No one is saying Linux is bulletproof, but it is by no means a larger risk than Windows.
- Tenetri, on 10/18/2007, -2/+43I just love how Microsoft is trying to put the "FEAR" in the average user to think Linux is run by communists... like like in the 1900's... lol
Next Ad Campaign: "If you buy Linux, the terrorists win" - fugazi, on 10/18/2007, -4/+42Ya so Iz wah tryn to cmposz a centece butt coldntz and u no i am like so ckoll.
- kevinisnthere, on 10/19/2007, -3/+36Give them some credit for being honest; they say that the software is predicable. I mean, we all know it's gonna crash.
- GMorgan, on 10/18/2007, -4/+36No actually it is a lie. The state government said nothing, some person who isn't even related to the state government anymore said it. They have taken the opinion of one random person and made out it is the official position of an entire state. That is a lie, however you want to construe it.
- renegadeafk, on 10/18/2007, -3/+31Wow.. Just wow, that was possibly the poorest written comment I have ever seen. Punctuation man...
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -1/+29You need a IQ over 50 to run Linux.
- skold1, on 10/18/2007, -5/+32First they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
- DashingLeech, on 10/18/2007, -1/+28They can't be too serious about it though, otherwise they'd have used their lobbyists to have Linux declared as a "terrorist" or "enemy combatant".
- sirhomer, on 10/18/2007, -2/+26According to 15 U.S.C. §45 (United States Code, chapter 15, section 45), also known as the "Federal Trade Commission Act" advertisements which contain "false or deceptive statements" are illegal. So it may very well be illegal here in the States as well.
- wassim2k, on 10/18/2007, -1/+25Best review ever.
- twtmc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23If you have seen any of those commercials, you will know how full of ***** they are, just from the fact that microsoft called its fake newspaper in the commercials "The Highly Reliable Times". When I first saw it, I lolled
- saifatlast, on 10/18/2007, -3/+25Put differently, the kind of sysadmin who allows his windows computers to get hacked into would allow his linux computers to do the same.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26One in an increasingly shrill string of statements by an increasingly panicked company. With Vista, we've seen that Microsoft has even given up the pretense of competing on quality... now they have nothing but their bully FUD tactics and strongarming. At least with XP, they had a decent platform to compete with, but now they are pulling the plug on XP to force people into Vista. Between that an OEM bundles, it's the only way to get Vista to sell.
- Ademan, on 10/18/2007, -2/+23Uh, being able to use linux doesn't mean they can EXPLOIT linux. Of course i'm sure an entity as vast as the chinese military (don't they have as many people in the military as there are people in the U.S.?) would be able to crack into a linux box as well, but i feel they would have stood a better chance with linux.
- byrdgang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22How about honesty in marketing?
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Maybe it is, just no one has tried to sue Microsoft yet for it? I'm pretty sure certain types of advertisement are illegal here in the States too.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Just because many murderers get away with murder does not mean we should stop going after murderers.
- jalexhall1989, on 10/10/2007, -6/+25This is just M$ acknowledging how bit of a threat Linux actually is.. It's pretty funny i think.
- davman99, on 10/18/2007, -0/+18Funniest thing I read all day.
- sirhomer, on 10/18/2007, -2/+20lulz wut u say?
- sirhomer, on 10/18/2007, -3/+21Business can not lie or misrepresent competitor products in advertisements.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Clearly your time is, since you are spending it trolling Linux articles on Digg. :)
- Netrilix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18You outdid yourself this time. We were all impressed that you managed to limit a full two paragraph post in "Do Not Park Here! [PIC]" to ONE question mark. This time you've managed two paragraphs without a single mark of punctuation. I am honestly impressed.
- frazw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17There are loads of us like that. I think we need to let Games developers know that.
- motters, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Smart folks at Microsoft must know that the game's over for their present business model. Perhaps not right now, but in the years to come. In the long term I don't believe that they'll be able to compete against open source software, either on price or in terms of security. The WGA fiasco has done much to damage their reputation, evidencing the fact that in closed source systems companies can install whatever they like onto computers without the users permission or knowledge. Over-use of DRM may also drive users away from the Windows operating system.
- ejpusa, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Folks, I know people that work in IT for the Illinois state government. They tell me that are PARALYZED, it's an unmitigated disaster dealing with the current Windows systems. Food for thought.
- Senn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Yes.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Freedom of speech only applies to natural people, not corporations.
- rycan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17national holiday?
- DangerCollie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17That's the potential downside of negative advertising. It draws attention to your competitor and legitimizes them. If Microsoft is concerned about Linux, it means they consider it something more than a mere science project. Otherwise why bother?
Not sure why negative advertising seems to work better in politics. But it's a weak strategy for Microsoft. - inactive, on 10/18/2007, -9/+24Go talk to any windows user.
- fiberspy, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22I only keep Windows around because it has a monopoly on the gaming market
- TotalHalibut, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20I am shocked that you haven't been hired by a top security firm with vast knowledge like that.
- mcmlxxii, on 10/18/2007, -0/+14that is class man, you had me in stitches
- mcnasby, on 10/18/2007, -2/+15Gosh! No one said you have to pass 4th grade to be a commenter on digg. You should know that by now!
- Ademan, on 10/18/2007, -1/+14It may be a quote but it's used to intentionally mislead people, it may not technically be a lie but it's every bit as bad as one.
- taxali, on 10/18/2007, -7/+19I know its not going to happen, but im taking a day off of work the day Microsoft goes under.
- djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13RHEL, SLED, Oracle...
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Why do they need someone to point "the finger"? That doesn't get anything done. If they need technical support there are a ton of Linux companies to provide it for them.
- dreyergustav, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12And Microsoft will help you if your system goes down? Read your EULA again.
- sirhomer, on 10/18/2007, -3/+14Quoting someone else lie to promote something is as bad as coming up with the lie yourself.
- fusama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11So you're saying that theres 49 users with infected windows boxes for every one user that has half a clue how to use a computer (and thus easily keeps it clean)? Thinking about some of the users I've had to deal with last week...plausible.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14All hackers are script kiddies. Right.
