- Plotinus, on 11/07/2008, -36/+511Two points:
1) Is anybody suprised by this kind of ***** anymore?
2) Who, using Firefox on Linux, would even want to create a hotmail account? We should be thanking them for ensuring that new ubuntu users stay away from MS in all it's forms. - MakanGuru, on 11/07/2008, -13/+156there are people who use Linux that use hotmail?
- CrunchyWater, on 11/07/2008, -14/+147Has anyone tried spoofing the user agent in Firefox on Linux, to make it look like the Windows version?
If that fixes Hotmail, it's definitive proof that Microsoft did this on purpose. - PrometheusZero, on 11/08/2008, -7/+972) RTFA. He said he's been using Hotmail before Microsoft even bought it. ie; he shouldn't be forced to change his operating system and browser to use his long kept email address because of Microsoft's *****.
- trogdoor, on 11/08/2008, -7/+75"If that fixes Hotmail, it's definitive proof that Microsoft did this on purpose."
Not necessarily, it could be that they have a dumb whitelist that looks for exact user agent strings and had not thought to include firefox on linux. It's unfortunately common and almost always due to incompetence rather than malice. - Lykil, on 11/08/2008, -3/+69An obviously clueless lady called into a talk radio show about computing and asked, "Do I need, um, a computer to use Windows 98?"
The host's response was perfect: "You'll have less trouble with Windows 98 without a computer than with one." - TheAttacks, on 11/07/2008, -17/+73Two very valid points.
I would expect tech-savvy 14 year-olds using Ubuntu to be cool enough to have a Gmail account. . . pfft. - DubYaSee, on 11/08/2008, -5/+58Gmail
- ileftfark, on 11/08/2008, -7/+59Inaccurate. Hotmail works on Linux (shuddup- it was an MSN account from like '99)... the entire article was about Iceweasel not working. If you read, it says once they changed the UserAgent ID to Firefox, it worked. Not so much to do with Linux, more to do with browser.
- Spr0k3t, on 11/08/2008, -7/+52Spoofing shouldn't be needed to be able to use ANY web site.
- oblique63, on 11/08/2008, -15/+56dammit microsoft, you're turning into apple...
- rmxz, on 11/08/2008, -3/+36"due to incompetence rather than malice."
From Microsoft it's often been malice hiding as incompetence.
Microsoft loves this strategy. They've been doing this at least since the early 90's. It's giving me flashbacks to Microsoft's lawsuit with DrDos where they deliberately added similar fake error message:
http://www.maxframe.com/DR/Info/fullstory/ca_sues_ ...
"beginning in December, 1991, Microsoft released beta versions of Windows 3.1 containing code that generated error messages when Windows 3.1 ran on top of DR DOS rather than MS-DOS.
Microsoft created these error messages solely for the purpose of creating the impression that DR DOS would be incompatible with Windows in order to dissuade customers from purchasing DR DOS." - Peterix, on 11/08/2008, -7/+38I would say some Microsoft employee is a total moron and botched the browser detection code. Main problem being the fact, that there's something like this in place. It's a BAD practice and whoever did this should be sacked for total ignorance.
- srg13, on 11/08/2008, -1/+32You can use a different address for MSN messenger, and then use Pidgin as the client, which has very good MSN support.
- mashw, on 11/08/2008, -8/+37Why's it always a ***** conspiracy with you guys. Kind of pathetic.
- Gatesgamer33, on 11/08/2008, -4/+31I can remember doing this in the past, and yes it does work.
- watcht, on 11/07/2008, -8/+341-Nope.
2- Here's where i must disagree though: People need hotmail for reasons beside their own , hell i needed an msn/hotmail screenname to talk to other friends and family/Business who only use msn and don't use anything else, i could try an persuade em to use some opensource im like gmail/gtalk/jabber, but you know how people hate to change, and how you ended up being the guy they call for support when something goes wrong. - Drizzit, on 11/08/2008, -9/+35This inconvenienced about 20 people?
- motang, on 11/08/2008, -1/+25Work around: Download the User agent switcher from Mozilla Addons ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59 ) and use this as you user agent (Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032620 Firefox/3.03 ).
- endersdad, on 11/08/2008, -3/+26So the title of this post should be 'Microsoft Provides Spam Reduction for Linux Users'
- TyreeJackson, on 11/08/2008, -13/+36Yes.
- mrsteveman1, on 11/08/2008, -7/+29If you read the article it isn't the OS string it checks.
Notice these people are using Debian to test. They completely forgot or ignored that the morons at debian are fanatics who had to rename firefox to iceweasle because of the ***** artwork. That broke hotmail, not linux.
Renaming the useragent back to firefox fixed the problem on the SAME MACHINE.
Basically Debian caused this problem by ***** with the useragent. - Peterix, on 11/08/2008, -1/+23QUOTE:
We loaded "about:config" in the address bar, entered "iceweasel" in the search bar, and then changed the value of the the "general.useragent.extra.firefox" entry from "Iceweasel/3.03" to "Firefox/3.03". After that, Hotmail worked as expected. As an added bonus, we could also use the Rhapsody music streaming services, and other websites that use loose browser qualification by parsing the UserAgent string sent by the browser in the HTTP header.
... And I was right. I hope this gets on Daily WTF :D - LucasVB, on 11/08/2008, -4/+26lol, hotmail
- cplusplus, on 11/08/2008, -7/+28It says "browser not supported". Do you think that message got into the hotmail code by mistake?
- knuj, on 11/08/2008, -15/+36Bad Standards, Underhanded Tricks, Monopolistic Behavior, Blatant Greed, Cradle to Grave User Exploitation, FUD....Yes Definitely Microsoft. SOLUTION: Don't use Hotmail!
Microsoft to Internet Users "Conform to our standards for Web Usage...Resistance is Futile...we will write code for the internet the way we want, F(*& everyone else the internet should conform to us!" - smacksaw, on 11/08/2008, -0/+20Yeah, in the 90's when I worked at CompUSA in Seattle, someone returned a Windows CD.
"I put the CD in my stereo, turned on the TV and nothing happened."
True story. I told that one in class for years. I had an elderly woman who talked into her mouse like a CB and someone who broke a CD drive, busting the tray "my cupholder is broken" when they sat their bottle on it...I suspect this is common stuff. I've heard similar stories on those radio show. - TheWindBlows, on 11/07/2008, -2/+22I had it since a short time after discovering the internetz, and didn't even know of linux at the time. ( 2-3 years ago ).
I still have a hotmail it's pretty much my spam email account though. - spikes, on 11/08/2008, -2/+21This is purely to do with IceWeasel, not Firefox or Linux. Typical Debian'ism. Even though they're the same thing, the UA string is not. Misleading title. I'm a Linux user at heart, but even I know when the Microsoft bashing is going overboard.
- HonoredMule, on 11/08/2008, -1/+18The article is inaccurate. Hotmail didn't "break" the site for linux users, it's just trying to use browser-specific functions (often necessary for Javascript, esp. AJAX), and has execution paths to support the major browsers (IE, Safari, Firefox, and probably Opera as well).
It's the kind of douchebaggery that leads to IceWeasel even changing its user-agent string that leads to websites like Hotmail being unable to reliably identify browser engines (gecko) that are 100% compatible with the implementation in the reference browser (Firefox). - outofcoffee, on 11/08/2008, -9/+25RTFA - Iceweasel not FF broken. IW not supported, so message shown. User agent string change fixes issue.
I own a Mac, several PCs some RHL and some Windows. POS articles like this piss me the ***** off. - junkstore, on 11/08/2008, -3/+19Exactly.
It seems that Hotmail just wasn't checking for Iceweasel's UserAgent string, which is different from Firefox's. However, the article also mentions the problem in Firefox on Ubuntu which in theory shouldn't be happening.
The guy then makes a ridiculous statement, "so clearly, MS has broken their service to only work on MS systems". - faster3200, on 11/08/2008, -4/+19OSX can't be used on a PC without modification. Don't try to tell me that is a hardware issue either; they both have the same parts and you can run Windows on a Mac.
- altgeeky1, on 11/08/2008, -4/+19Are you implying that Ubuntu is somehow a teenage-centric OS?
The funny thing about your post is, only 14 year olds have the TIME needed to fix their OS every time they upgrade. This is the same mindset that crows about Gentoo because it's more involved.
I'll admit that many of these upgrade issues are due to RPM conflicts (Daag Wiers, Fedora Extras etc) but so what? Ubuntu just lets you check a box accepting personal responsibility to add any patent-encumbered gray area stuff.
Ubuntu is the perfect desktop Linux (and giving credit where it is due, a big thanks also to the Debian folks for developing such a good platform and package management system) - archiesteel, on 11/08/2008, -12/+26Yes. This would fit the pattern for Microsoft.
It's time for the full weight of the law to fall on the Redmond giant to make sure ***** like this doesn't happen anymore. - crownedgriffin, on 11/08/2008, -5/+19You guys are rediculous. Microsoft isn't trying to block Linux users from using their advertisement delivery service known as Hotmail. Some web designer just forgot one of a rediculous amout of user agent strings.
- rtaibah, on 05/22/2009, -6/+20 I don't know about creating a new account, but logging in works just fine. I mean I got an error that tells me to update, however I get an option to ignore this "error". Once logged in, it was functional, not sure what features are missing, since I haven't used my account for ages, but functional nonetheless.

That said, Microsoft should really wake up and realize that such tactics aren't really doing them any favors. - inactive, on 11/08/2008, -4/+17cool enough to have an account with one giant corporation and not another?
no
cool enough to have a POP account nobody's ever heard of. gmail doesn't get you any free samples from national semiconductor etc :D - seshomarusamma, on 11/08/2008, -1/+14I can access hotmail , send and receive emails on firefox 3 / ubuntu
- RaulMuadDib, on 11/08/2008, -2/+15Their products break even if you do use Windows.
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -0/+13Gmail > hotmail
- phpchris, on 11/08/2008, -2/+15You're able to use any email address with MSN/Live messenger. All you need to do is create a new Live ID https://accountservices.passport.net/ppnetworkhome ...
For example you could register your gmail email address then use it to login to live messenger - steviesteveo, on 11/08/2008, -0/+13More importantly - it's broken on Windows too.
Personally, if you (MS) really want me to pay for your products, the least you could do is let me access my heavily spammed free webmail account using Opera - Murdats, on 11/08/2008, -1/+14you can use any email for live services. my gmail account is also my live account.
- JakeW, on 11/08/2008, -2/+14Label it, archive it. It's out of your inbox.
- threon, on 11/08/2008, -0/+12There are some things on Apple's web store that only work if you are using Safari.
- smacksaw, on 11/08/2008, -4/+16@santaliqueur
I've always scoffed at that notion. Am I leasing my hardware from Apple? Is it their machine or mine? - smotpoker, on 11/08/2008, -3/+14Yes, I do it all of the time. Typically it has nothing to do with MS initiatives, just sloppy/lazy coding practices (as trogdoor mentioned)
However, knowing this problem has existed with hotmail for at least a year (IIRC the first time I heard of this specific problem), Microsoft owns it and was never a problem before MS took over... - muszek, on 11/08/2008, -2/+13sure they do, one quick copy&paste from my filters:
