- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Actually sadly microsoft have had that logo for years.
Its taken from a african model which i think..... Picasso did.
Anyone who truely knows their art will be able to identify it for us. (im just a art lover, i never studied it properly).
Shame really,
Oh and if your thinking im some m$ loving hippy, i run gentoo ;) - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Pfft.. They've been using those fat blue people in different ways on various MSN logo for years. This is obviously an extension of their brand. I mean, what would marketing have to gain in making one of their logos for an unrelated, free product, look similar to the logo of an open source operating system? MSN Spaces isn't even a piece of software.
The concept that this logo was 'stolen' 'exactly' is absurd. The logo shows a group of people coming together (which, coincidentally, is also fundamentally what Ubuntu is about) and uses the people-based MSN branding theme to do it. It's not surprising that the two logos are similar, and given that there are so many linux distros, and so many microsoft products, it's almost inevitable that something like this would occur. - skyfex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I can't see the logo on the linked page in Camino, but if it's the normal MSN spaces logo, then yeah.. it's quite similar (god, they made it ugly though). But not close enough that I would call it stealing.
- michaelbeckham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6reported as inaccurate
- tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have seen the MS/Ubuntu logo (the whole holding hands in a circle thing) in various other places as well. They both 'borrowed' it.

http://digg.com/linux_unix/Microsoft_Pirates_Ubuntu_s_Logo
107 days ago, people said it was old then too. - Hurricane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, they both have the same inspiration in an old artwork.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not only is it old, but it's a dupe (it was proved wrong back then too) and it's inaccurate.
reported. - atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I heard this story months ago (maybe even on digg)
Who cares, is it news? It would be if they would be sued by Canonical for that, right now, as it stands, there are two logos who look similar -- big deal! - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This isn't really newsworthy is it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Not that I dont believe you, but I've been using every microsoft product under the sun for as long as the next guy and I have NEVER seen that logo used by microsoft until now.
does anybody have a source to back up this claim? - bdthomas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4...the only difference is that the people on the M$ logo have a pot belly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i dont see any similar logos.
- Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google image search for msn spaces logo and theres a couple of examples:
http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=msn spaces logo&btnG=Search
including this amusing page:
http://spaces.msn.com/spaceslogo/Blog/cns!1pewB9JxHjvFn1yxWqZBvnIw!105.entry - agentsandoval, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where is that logo?
- verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is old news
REALLY old news
Anyone who diggs this is an IDIOT - michaelbeckham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has been Removed from front page already
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/529/foo5ej.jpg
- FarcePest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whether or not they ripped off the Ubuntu logo, they definitely ripped off Tux, and still are.
http://digg.com/linux_unix/_Microsoft_genetically-modifies_Tux_ - twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used "a year" pretty loosely, but it was on here quite a while ago. Also, check your math...spring 2005 was about a year ago.
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This exact same accusation was on Digg about a year ago. If memory serves me right I think it was determined that the MS logo came first.
It is possible for two logos to look similar without the artists ever having seen the other logo. - Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is news to you guys?
Microsoft has been using that MSN Spaces logo for over a year now. - XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Limited funds? They are not getting funded too much anymore, they are making money by support.
If you think free software is free for beer (price), then you're so wrong. - JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When stuff like this makes it to the front page, it leaves the distinct impression that the "reporting" here is more propaganda than news, particularly if it is associated with Linux in any way.
- JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And the funny thing is that comments like this often come from Linux fanboys who are oblivious to the fact that Linux is just the latest in a long line of Unix clones. How original is that?
- charlietuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see the logo on the upper left of my (Breezy Badger) screen. I guess Ubuntu had better get out of MS's way and use a new logo. I'd rather they spend there limited funds of keeping this distro as terrific as it already is.
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Exactly where to you see the logo? Can't spot any.
- Cyper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0djsmiley2k, perhaps you are referring to Picasso's "Dance of Youth", which can be seen at:
http://www.popartuk.com/g/l/lgap625.jpg
It's not exactly the same, but similar. - bdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0as far as picaso, the closest i know is his 'the three dancers' which itself is the basis of imitation by matisse's "Nasturtiums with 'Dance' II," you can check it out here:
http://www.thecityreview.com/matpic18.jpg
interestingly enough, read this quote from the caption on that site: ""Nasturtiums with Dance II," is a meditation on the way art is made from art, in the serenity of the studio, the opposite of Picasso's "The Three Dancers." It is an anti-Cubist work with classical roots," - Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1MSN Spaces wasn't launched until 2 months after Ubuntu.
And they weren't using the current logo until Spring 2005 - Sassanix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dupe story!!! search please ppl :(
http://www.humanrightsfirst.org/index.asp Ubuntu clearly got their idea from the human rights first which has been around for a while.
http://www.kosmaczewski.net/blogs/tech/archives/2005/12/similar_logos.php - DJMac317, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1just like microsoft to be unoriginal as usual
