- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -5/+152Microsoft was not "actually" distributing Linux, they displayed Ubuntu with a download link pointing to download.com which is part of CNet.com, just wanted to point that out for truth & accuracy...
personally if i wanted Ubuntu i would rather get it from one of Canonical's authorized Ubuntu mirrors... - ihascheezburger, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28Technically, since Ubuntu is free, it's more like out-"distributing."
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21This is digg!
Truth and accuracy are not required if you post something disparaging about any of the community punching bags. - plutpwnium, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19Dont see the point of a repeat story like this. Buried for Duplicate story. People know that all these things are captured on Digg Mirror. Especially a story that got as many diggs as the original one did. Anyways, BURIED.
- loqqq, on 10/11/2007, -11/+23"Oh no, Ubuntu is out-selling Vista." That would explain why the devil is wearing a winter coat.
- thenativeraver, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10You should get an actual computer, one without vacuum tubes...
- Youssif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7For those who missing the show:
http://www.7ears.com/forums/uploads/435053ubuntu-windows.jpg - rbond, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Microsoft does use akamai.net which runs on Linux
- DirtySnachez, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I'd choose Iraq over Redmond anyday fool.
- Nocterminus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11I wonder what happened to the person who setup that page? Are they now transferred to the MS-Iraq office?
- bromac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And this is relevant because...?
Stop being so patronizing. Grow up, and learn that people already know that companies are after dollars. Some just do it a little more ethically, with better quality products. - leszek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4you can't believe how many people misspell Ubuntu.
I've seen all:
Unbuntu, Ubkuntu, Ubantu, Uboontu.... - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Ubuntu is free so it can never outsell Vista.
- ECas123, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Well they are copying the Ubuntu logo on a Microsoft site ( http://msanet.org/ ) so why not try to distribute it?
- dimension128, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I thought that the law now said something like "providing a link to the content is the same as hosting it", and that gives legal power to take action agents places like thepiratebay, etc. Not that microsoft would actually be doing anything illegal by distributing any linux distro, but it seems the same action should be defined the same way regardless of who is doing it.
- conna, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3that is way too geek creepy for my taste.
- Sethwm2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2OMFG that is so great!! Was it a disgruntled Microsoft employee?
- Ksg89, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"Microsoft Alumni Network is not affiliated with Microsoft Corporation"
- gpit2286, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I definitely put this on the wrong thread... had 2 windows open.. it ment to go... http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_computer_fits_in_USB_key
- Aleister76, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Linux can be used by the non-techy.
- TexanPsycho, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Are you sure that's an official Microsoft site?
- betterth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Oh please do! I'd love to see you get squashed for attempting to trick one of the most sue-happy and richest companies in the world. No seriously, I have no love for Microsoft, but the resulting slaughter would be amusing for even the staunchest MS hater.
- vanden9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2http://digg.com/linux_unix/Windows_Marketplace_Ubuntu
- cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I ment digg it up not down..........
- RoflMyWaffle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3is this anything like when they had Garage Band as one of the pieces of recommended music software for Windows? Basically a stupid mistake that shows how little their employees know what the ***** they're doing and are just researching their ***** off the internet
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Yeah, their 'internal' distro is called MS/Linux right?
Get a job.
They've using servers running on Linux though. - msoule, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2But they may be giving up their right to sue for their patents under such a finding. Not that their GigaLawyer brigade wouldn't find a loophole though.
- asaone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1lol, I love it. Micky$oft selling Ubuntu. Well I guess if you can't beat Ubuntu they figure they can join the party.
- co1dfus1on, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Apparently the server for windows live was running linux at one point but they got 'found out' and quickly switched to our good old friend windoze server 03
- EricJ2190, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Sure it can. Ubuntu can be legally sold. I doubt anyone will be getting enough buyers to outsell Vista since Ubuntu can be obtained for free, but it is theoretically possible.
- barbobot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/results.aspx?text=linux&tabid=1
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -1/+09/11 MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW. HOW COULD I HAVE NOT THOUGHT OF THIS BEFOR............. ZZZzzzzzzzzzzz
- jevb007, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1ZOMG! It's a Digg conspiracy! Someone is trying to silence your views on operating systems! And through Digg, even! Oh, no, a site that is provided FREE and operated by a private citizen might possibly maybe controlling its content! The end is near, my friend.
- ihascheezburger, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3And everyone who dugg this story.
- myklm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0"Ubuntu is perfect!"thats true.
Linux native installer for "The Witcher"game: http://www.petitiononline.com/7730722/petition.html - Cherubim, on 10/11/2007, -10/+8Microsoft probably uses GNU/Linux internally.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3^
I thought the new system would at least remove off-topic replies to the first post. I thought wrong. - conna, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1all hail Microsoft Linux... Think if they make it usable for the masses of non computer savvy people. It's coming....
- ihascheezburger, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Damn. All my replies are out of place now since the comment system was changed once again. Then I get digged down for looking like an idiot.
- c10h14n2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Buried as inaccurate...there is a simple URL trick that allows you to display any webpage inside the main microsoft page. Its sort of like loading the ubuntu website in a frame on the microsoft website. A few weeks ago someone gave instructions using the Unbuntu website. Now they are using the download.com website.
I can't remember the trick exactly, but you just do something stupid like type www.microsoft.com/marketplace=www.ubuntu.com.
I can't remember the syntax, but its just a trick - crazybugger, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1I am an eternal optimist!
One day microsoft will be selling linux as windows. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4The trouble with you Linux foot soldiers is that you know nothing about business and marketing. "Linux Corporations" and Microsoft are businesses employing people who get paid for their services. "Linux Corporations" are in it for the money as is Microsoft. Grow up, get a life and learn how the real world works.
- lougoose, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Oh Microsoft...what are we ever going to do with you? Stupid, stupid Microsoft.
- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -13/+9someone put a link to download ubuntu on a microsoft website and this is news?
SPAMubuntu - fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Or in this case, if you combine an attack on the collective punching bag with support for the collective wank sock ....
- cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2I hope everyone diggs this to death.
- dist0rti0n, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3*yawn*
- jman8888, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4Well whoever did thats getting fired.
- jevb007, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5I'd like to do an informal survey. How many of you guys don't even bother downloading porn any more, but rather just type "ubuntu" into google when you are feeling lonely?
- betterth, on 10/11/2007, -15/+9http://digg.com/microsoft/Vista_sales_propel_Microsoft_s_profits_to_almost_5_BILLION
