Michael Dell uses Ubuntu!
english.martinvarsavsky.net — Lately I have been blogging that I am an Ubuntu Fan and use both Ubuntu and Mac. The story was that after 20 years of struggling with Microsoft, after a major crash of my Lenovo that left me without access to my data for five days I was ready for something new. I experimented both with Mac and Ubuntu and liked both for different reasons and now I u

The world according to Michael Dell: More is more. :-) - ryanmetcalf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+89@zachlutz
"Ubuntu is on one of 5 computers. Furthermore...who needs 5 computers?!?!"
Some of us have many computers (I for one, have 4 of my own) and yes, they all serve a purpose, granted mine aren't all new systems, because I can't afford them like Michael Dell, but some of us host our own sites, host our own game servers, etc....
1 out of 5 is still *using Ubuntu*. If Dell produced 1 out of 5 with Linux pre-loaded (they're on the way..), we'd be celebrating. - zachlutz, on 10/12/2007, -25/+1I just can't imagine keeping everything in order Of course there's ways to do it, but at what point does it all come to be too much? With four Windows systems, it's not as if one is performing tasks that another couldn't do.
- stevejobbs, on 10/12/2007, -29/+12zachlutz
maybe you can't keep track of more than 5 things because you're a mac user. Macs are easy because they take your choice away. the funny part is Macfags just bend over and take it, and atcually enjoy being told what they can do.
Macs, Easy Because you Can't - bias, on 10/12/2007, -34/+9What's the big deal!? Dell is a hardware company, what's the different if he use Windows or Linux... His company used to sell Windows PC only, that doesn't mean he only use Windows. So you really think the people who work at KFC only eat chicken from KFC? Jeez, you ***** stupid fanboys get excited on every tiny bit of useless, ***** info.
- rmxz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25@bias: "His company used to sell Windows PC only,"
No, it hasn't for a long long long time (most of a decade).
From Michael Dell's 2000 LinuxWorld Keynote:
"Dell is now the No. 2 provider of Linux-based systems worldwide and the first major manufacturer to offer Linux across its full product line."
And quoting Michael Dell in 2003:
"We continue to offer Linux on the desktop and there is nothing else to say"

But Ubuntu's free...
And some Dells are pretty cheap. Plus, from many close friends' experiences, the Dell Latitude line is pretty good. - bias, on 10/12/2007, -25/+3Good that I was wrong, so now everyone know that these ***** retarded Linux fanboys get excited on useless, ***** and decade old news.
- jsballardx, on 10/12/2007, -23/+5Holy ***** Michael Dell uses Ubuntu!! I'm going to bludgeon myself with a stapler I'm so excited! I'm so excited I'm *****' kittens!

I agree. Lets all spend a lot of money on a Mac, even though our normal computer works fine, just so we can get a crippled OS. - gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Boy, if you look at his profile, you can see that bias is a real linux troll/microsoft fanboy. I'm blocking him.

All of that... and he only has a 17" Widescreen LCD? Dell doesn't even *make* a 17" Widescreen LCD! Shows how much faith he has in his own LCD screens (which are fantastic, by the way). - incubusnb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Furthermore...who needs 5 computers?!?!"
Personally, I have 8 running 24/7, another dozen that are powered up when i need them, and 3 seperate laptops for seperate purposes.
Very few of those computers have hardware made in the past year, and even fewer have less than 5 year old hardware, some where purchased for $20 at a yard sale or otherwise.
Of those computers, some are file servers, some are work-related, some are school related, and 2 are Gaming related, one desktop and one laptop.
do I really "need" these computers? no, but it makes multi-tasking a million times easier; when i can compile 50k lines of code on 1 computer, while using another for a tv show, while writing a report, playing another turn of Civ4, and surfing the internet all at the same time, without worrying about one process using resources for another process, then I can be as efficient as I am physically capable of.
not to mention the 7.3TB of data stored, i have a hard time deleting things :P - aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@incubusnb

- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@rpgmaker: ubuntu-restricted-extras
automatix2 seems to break things - generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You don't need automatix for Feisty Fawn for most common things....Java (will soon be gpl'd), flash, codecs are very easily installed. Codecs ask you to install them if you play, say, a wmv file in totem.
- rpgmaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@strabes: apt-get break things? Because thats what automatix do, they don't do any especial configuration on top of what the package install, that packages are mostly in the universe repositorys that you use on a daily basis. The automatix-devs dont own a repository...
Anyways the fame that automatix break things was spread (with the support of ubuntuforums.org) and now that mislead the people about the project and insult the GOOD work of the automatix-devs.

The Linux fanboys will digg you down big time because you speak the truth and they know it. No popular software titles will run on it (and not just kiddy computer games), even if you have hours to screw around with WINE, which I doubt he does. - toran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You make the assumption, saturn, that you need to have big-name commercial software to be productive.
- MeltedUFO, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Most Linux software I've used works better than commercially available Windows programs IMO

The truth is that he uses both Windows and Linux, like a lot of people here at Digg. - dgr814vr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just because the owner of the company uses a linux distribution on one computer of 5 does not mean that Dell itself does not use Windows. Dell the company runs on Windows
- toxickiwi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Nice to see... I use Ubuntu only on my Dell 600m... I must say the install of Ubuntu on my Dell was very easy, everything working straight from the setup.

- pozzy77, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0This is cool that Michael Dell is using Linux but after an order with them today I will never order from them again. I have now found the camera for almost the same price on Newegg and it is imposable to find the cancel option on Dells Site. No matter how good the deal is its not worth ordering from them anymore

- raldz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12what's the hype all about? it's common knowledge that smart guys uses Linux... Michael Dell is smart.. (I think..)
- captcanuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because this is more than any one individual using it - no matter how "smart" they are.
This is a Market Signal. This is the president of a notorious Microsoft "co-marketer" *signalling* that he uses something OTHER than Microsoft. Dell the company has a harder time doing the same. This info was posted on the Direct 2 Dell blog and by the read of the article, e-mailed to some "seeders". They are about to move and combined with Feisty launching tomorrow, they might be keying off a 2 week or one month from now launch. - snuf42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I actually think this makes sense. Dell got a tremendous amount of feedback requesting that more computer options were available with Linux installed. Dell has offered some systems with Linux at least since back in 2000. Their servers are available with Red Hat Enterprise installed. Ubuntu is the current most popular desktop distro. It sure makes sense that Michael Dell would be checking it out. He's also got VMware on the box, probably running Windows. I think if anything it's more telling that he isn't running Vista on ANY of his systems.
- captcanuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because this is more than any one individual using it - no matter how "smart" they are.
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I have Ubuntu on one of my machines at home too, a Dell Inspiron laptop that is a couple years old. I had to research and set up a work around to get Ubuntu to handle the WUXGA display correctly. It took the better part of a day to get running right (as a linux noob). Was a huge pain in the ass. Call me when Ubuntu works.
- sworoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's your phone number, I'll call you right now.... Ubuntu works fine, but not because it's special, Linux works just fine. That is if you consider Windows working fine, then you'd surely say Linux works just fine.......

- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4WOW, you found some people who are using Ubuntu on a Dell PC from a Google search, that's just amazing!!!
- saturn5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is just slick marketing. Michael Dell to Ubuntu fanboys - "Send me $1,654 and you can use Ubutnu on an M90, just like me!"
- Feej, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Lets look at this in another way...
Michael Dell uses Microsoft Windows on Four out of Five pc's he owns!
Oh, but that isn't news, right?- rpgmaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Of course not you *****.
- theratster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4actually, that's not bad... 4/5 is only 80%, with 20% linux.
Right now the rest of the world is like 95% windows.
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I could understand this being a story if Michael Dell had come out and said "I am so sick of Windoze sucking that I have removed it from my PC and replaced it with the amazing Linux distro, Ubuntu, which is superior to crappy Winblows in every way ", but he didn't say that or anything like it. So what exactly is the point of this lame story? Does this mean Steve Ballmer will pay him a visit and give him a good kicking for not using only Windows? (some of you will probably believe that).
- saturn5, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Maybe if he says "Ooboontoo is so awesome Dell will now no longer sell Windows and only sell Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu/Edubuntu/Gaybuntu blah, blah, blah..."
- AbsoluteMSTR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Isn't ubuntu using the unstable version of debian to manage ubuntu. I tried debian and found it more stable then ubuntu. I liked debian, but it lacks keeping its packages up to date like wine and harder to find the need help. Ubuntu is a lot better to get help on how to do stuff compared to debian. I still not a 100% linux user but i switch between Fedora, Ubuntu, and Debian. Debian 4.0 is really nice... got to try Ubuntu 7 now...

Well if they are all Dell's then you need 5 of them to raise your chances that one of them will be working when you need to use a computer! :) - varshney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you see Dell's profile he uses Automatix2 with Ubuntu well new release of ubuntu dosent need automatix but since he uses it he would soon have screwed up repositories .
- katabatic213, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Why is it that every f*cking story that mentions Ubuntu gets voted to the from page?
URGENT NEWS! OMG! Ubuntu updated their ATI display drivers from 2.4.5 to 2.4.6! - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm just trying to figure out why the guy that wrote that uses Ubuntu just for Thunderbird and OpenOffice and the Mac for the rest when both those apps are available for the Mac. Seems annoying to have to jump operating systems for email or to write a paper when there really is no need
- homerhomer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yay!
I hope that this brings on better hardware support for linux. :D
My figures are crossed that Dell preloads Ubuntu.
- homerhomer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yay!
- raseel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dell with Ubuntu pre-loaded !! That would kick some serious ass !!!
- Elysium1298, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to get my hands on "windows office 2003", listed under "At work: DellTM Precision 690"
- hwn67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The good news continues! Dell is expanding its linux offerings in the next couple of months:
