- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>>Mandriva? what the hell kind of name is that?
That was my reaction when I first saw it. Personally, it makes me think of the word "mangina". - yeehawjared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nbx909 said "mandrake sucks go with ubuntu"
It's comments like these that makes me wish digg.com would do something about post relevance, ie. slashdot. - amishjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i used to like redhat til i found mandrake, til i found slackware, til i found ubuntu , til i found..... yea i keep trying distros til i find one that suits my needs, so many choices, so many choices for free, try them all:

- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why? You get great support, the availability of drivers and software that are not free (free as in beer, not free as in freedom) and great documentation."
and Joe Six Pack just goes - "why should i pay for this Linux thing when i've already paid for Windows" - nouse66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i upgraded the parents from mandrake 10.1 to mandriva 2006 today and it definitely seems faster on this ancient hardware. nothing spectacular but a nice improvement.
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Mandriva Linux 2006 Free is a complete and comprehensive Linux distribution consisting entirely of free and open source software"
in other words, it cant play mp3s or play win32codec video or play DVDs.
so Joe Six Pack goes - "well, this linux is crap" and goes back to windows.. - Toallpointswest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just upgrade my server from 10.1 to 2006 and like nouse66, have to agree the box just feels faster. Good show Mandrake!
- naich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The free version contains 100% open source software. If you pay to join the Mandriva Club, you can upgrade to the powerpack version, which includes closed source stuff like Flash, Realplayer etc. You also get improved support.
- encryptz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And NEVER pay for any distribution of linux." -- SkaAgent11
Why? You get great support, the availability of drivers and software that are not free (free as in beer, not free as in freedom) and great documentation.
Telling people not to pay for Linux will hurt the Open Source and Linux movement. It's great Linux companies make their operating systems and software free to the public, but they have to get their money somewhere, to pay their developers, market their product and manage overhead. If the money isn't coming in, you can kiss it goodbye. Just take a look at Caldera and Corel Linux. Both suffered financial setbacks, and now no longer offer their services.
If you like the software, you should be encouraged to make a donation or buy an upgrade edition if available. - middy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a contraction of "Mandrakesoft" and "Conectiva." The former aquired the latter earlier this year. Plus, it seems to have something to do with trademarking and other nonesense. Here's the link to the announcement: http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/company/press/pr/corporate_2551
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Home users could do a lot worse, and even IT managers may learn to love it." - Talk about Suse Linux 10
After talking good about Suse 10, to me that sentence makes it sound bad. Especially after they call it "a close second". Maybe I am interpreting it wrong though. I love Suse, but I'd like to try ubuntu also, I've heard nothing but good things about it. - grieks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone PAID to have realplayer on their computer? I'd pay anything to get all that crap off my computer
- otomax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hi everybody! in my experience mandriva is a good following to mandrake they had to change the name 'cause it was already licensed plus this distribution has the advantage to recognize most of your hardware from the start...no weird sound card problem..I've tried a few of the distros ubuntu, fedora, suse etc and Mandriva 2006 is really one of best.
- Lostcosmos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm running Mandriva Linux 2006 Free now and it's great. Very light weight as compared to Mandrake 10.0.
- spybreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0poor mandriva developers. I bet it's really not a bad distro, but if I use linux at all, right now it's Debian for servers and Ubuntu for the desktop.
Maybe they should do something about their name, or just re-evaluate their position in the linux market. - pincer_spider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The free version contains 100% open source software. isn't realplay and flash free? y would they make you pay just to hae stuff you can download and install??? - fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when you say post relevance, do you mean the score/rate comments? you can utilize those here on digg /
- t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait..people payed for linux with $$$?

- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joe Six Pack goes - "Why do I care!?" and jumps off the nearest bridge landing on a tourboat and severely damaging his spine, destroying his future dreams of becoming a world-renowned carnie.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since when was it a linux you paid for? I used it like 2years ago and downloaded it directly from there site free of charge
- SkaAgent11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Telling people not to pay for Linux will hurt the Open Source and Linux movement. Mandriva doesn't run open source and neither did Caldera or Corel. In fact distro makers make less software than anyone else out there. Its fallacious to believe that not buying a linux distro hurts the open source community when the majority of delevopers are not interested in monetary gain; Linux has been and I should suspect always will be the product of people united in their hatred bad software, not in their desire to make a product. Open source software is so good because the code is so easily obtainable; putting a price on it stiffles this. Its also quite interesting to me that the best distributions are always the ones the cost nothing; I.E. Arch Linux, Gentoo, Debian, Slackware, etc. Open source is about its community just as much as its software; now where would that community be if I have to call in tech support rather than posting on a forum? - khad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just lost a few braincells reading these comments :(
- yeehawjared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'm going to try it on my Dell Inspiron 8100 so I'm a bit skeptical on the install" - you should be fine, may have trouble with your wireless card though... there are lots of easy fixes though, just google
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0D/l site down for me. Thankfully the Unbuntu thread was right below it, so I'm d/ling it. Sounds like unbuntu is a pretty good version of Linux. I'm going to try it on my Dell Inspiron 8100 so I'm a bit skeptical on the install.
- aaarg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what has really changed since mandrake and conectiva merged? is the distro really better or is it just marketing?
- jimbo7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well at least ManDriva is better than WomanDriva
- rookworm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Some slightly better names for this distro:
-ManDiharrea
-ManDrivel
-MazdaDriver
"Mandrake" was a way better name - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0IMO, any "free" version indicates that you're not getting the whole package.. that's why I like ubuntu and others that don't hold back--they give it all to you..real free...not this fake free *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nbx909 said "mandrake sucks go with ubuntu"
Nice informative comment there, I like how you made an arguement, provided support to your arguement, and talked out your ass at the same time.
Nice one, I bet the Mandriva users are really hurting from that masterful flame. - Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Don't listen to them... These are your typical PHP+Mysql @ 1.95/mo kids. For them, everything above 1$ is expensive.
These are the type of guys that prefer to spend 10 hours trying to pirate a cell phone game instead of paying 1$ to buy it. Their opinions about operating systems are worth as much as my opinions about gardening. - SkaAgent11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Don't bother with mandriva unless you're a total learner or one who isn't ready to learn about linux or post on a forum a dozen times to figure out how the operating system works. It's just another RPM-hell distro with a nice face. If you really need a beginner distro, use Ubuntu. And NEVER pay for any distribution of linux. Closed source apps are available to everyone the same as the open source ones; the only obvious difference is you can't modify the code and redistribute it. I guarentee the flash plugin and java runtime are available in most of not all the trees for each distro's package manager. With Arch linux getting those things is as easy as "pacman -Sy flashplugin jre"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Open source is where noobs practice coding.
