- skyfex, on 10/12/2007, -10/+34Dear god! That's looks awful.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -11/+31? I dont get it, this is like pasting a Ferrari body on a VW Bug.
Dont get me wrong, I did the same thing with my Linux box, but its a hollow feeling, what makes OSX superior is the integration and attention to detail. Gnome isnt even in the same game. Though at the rate it is improving, in 3 years people might be putting Gnome themes on their OSX/Windows boxes. - optimusfx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12What a crappy copy/paste job. I would be so embarassed to run this.
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14I love the question on the screenshot.
Q: OS X or Linux?
A: Very clearly *not* OS X. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Mac Minis are SLOW (I've owned two, so yeah even with 1.5G of ram). Get a PC, install OSX86 and be done with it. Cheap affordable hardware, pretty-pretty OS, fast as a normal Mac, done deal.
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12dear lord....another one
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Saying that "Mac OS X is BSD" is a ridiculous over-simplification, but at least you didn't claim that Mac OS X is Linux (I love that one). Mac OS X's kernel, XNU, is a combination of Mach, FreeBSD, and an object-oriented IO layer called IOKit. It has a rich and varied heritage, only part of which is FreeBSD, so can we please lay off the OS X = [my favorite UNIX-like OS] garbage?
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Man - what's with digg and these typos? In his title he spelt "CRAP" "OSX"...
Seriously - that's the uggliest "OS X Lookalike" I've ever seen... - usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I dont get it either? OS X looks like ass anyway. i would rather use gnome with xgl or kde with composite. OS X is nothing more then a half ass version of BSD with sorry looking desktop.
Looks like something a three year old made with the over sized icons and the ones that bounce around in the bar..... damn that's a joke in itself. - setmajer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10This is the UI equivalent of the local bar band trying to cover 'Misty Mountain Hop': they hit the correct notes in the correct order, but they still manage to get it all wrong.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What gave you the first clue? The gnome logo in the top left of the screen?
- cg0def, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8dude your ferarri vw analogy is totally out of place. Gnome runs on all the BSD flavors and after all MacOS is a BSD kernel so it's more like a ferarri with a VW body ( gnome ) and another one with a Ferarri body ( OS X ). Plus while OS X looks great compared to 9.x I am not really sure that it's the ferarri of UI design.
- jgeorgeson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5gnome doesn't have a unified menu bar like os x, but kde does. I forget where the setting is, it might be in the Behavior preferences for Konqueror.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's free. Therefore its quality to cost ratio is infinitely higher than Mac OS X.
- adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Just save yourself the time (money) and buy Mac Mini if you just want the look, "
yeah, because a modified [free] linux distro is far more expensive then a $500 mac...
some poeple just like the look of OSX.. if they want to mod.. i say let them mod. - twowords, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7ok, this is lame.
- shadowflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why? There are much better looks that you can give your computer! Why are people obsessed with making a computer look like a Mac? Is that all people buy them for?
- TJENN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well I was looking for a good OS X theme for Ubuntu, but this one doesn't fit the bill.
- staan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I wanted Linux to look like OS X, so I bought a MacBook Pro.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I like your style. It reeks of low OS self esteem."
My self-esteem has nothing to do with my choice of OS. I use Linux and FreeBSD on my servers, Windows when I need to, and OS X for my desktop because I work most efficiently with it. If someone wants to use Windows all the time, then good for them. Windows is different, Microsoft has made some good choices, and I'm sure it fits a lot of people better than OS X or Linux would. Likewise, if someone wants to use Linux all the time, then bully for them. I have a friend who uses nothing but evilwm -- I couldn't handle it, but I'm sure he gets a lot more done that way than he would with OS X. I also work with a guy who refuses to use anything but his heavily-modded Amiga 4000T, running AmigaOS. Wonderful for him. BeOS, IRIX, NeXTSTEP, PalmOS, whatever. If it suits you, that's great. If you want to argue about value or cost of hardware and operating systems, I think that's a fairly piddly thing to do simply because the improvement in *my* productivity from using OS X far outweighs the money I would save by throwing Ubuntu on a used PIII. I should know, having used Windows since 1993, Linux since 1998, and OS X since 2004.
The problem is not that you like Windows (apparently -- feel free to stop me if you're an IRIX/BeOS/AmigaOS user), or even that you're a Windows zealot (or even the possibility that you might just think all OSes suck). The problem is that your comment wasn't interesting, wasn't amusing, and obviously (judging by you getting modded down) wasn't wanted. Getting modded down isn't really a compliment, you know? You're not forging new territory, here -- you're just a tiresome prosy.
Am I a Mac user? Yes. Do I think OS X is better than Windows or Linux? Only for my desktop needs -- I think it ***** sucks as a server OS, and it's obviously not the right choice for a gamer. Do I think there are too many irrelevant, unimportant Mac stories on Digg? Absolutely.
But do I really want to see every frigging article having something remotely to do with OS X trolled by some idiot who can't bring anything new (or even ***** **RELEVANT**, for chrissakes) to the table? No. Kinda like how I'd like to be able to read a given article on Windows without the requisite hordes of morons mentioning that $FEATURE is completely nullified by viruses and malware. Kinda like how I'd like to read a given article on Linux without having some idiot mention hardware support.
So your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to start thinking creatively. Criticize or mock or troll or whatever in a new, interesting way -- something we haven't heard before a billion times. Be imaginative. Attack OS X because the color blue killed your father! Attack Linux because penguins are the vehicle of the Anti-Christ! Or just settle for reasonable complaints, like Mach's various weaknesses or X11's esotericism.
That's all I'm saying. I don't ***** care what OSes you love or hate, just use real reasons, not ***** 13-year-old troll *****. Either that or go play in traffic. It's not that you have personally offended me -- it's that you are contributing to the stupidification of the Internet. The average IQ of Digg has measureably decreased as a result of your post. Please stop. Please. - zen.state, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5it looks like jaguar (osx 10.2) which is about 4 years old now. panther and tiger (10.3 and 10.4) look much better.
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7That, and the barfing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You wanna see MY version of a Ferrari on a VW?
Here's what my XP desktop looks like... http://www.lykachamp.com/desktop.jpg
Look how frickin' UGLY it is!!!!! - kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Um, "go"? Did you RTFA, or RTFSummary, or even RTFComments? Nothing about this involves "going" anywhere.
You're not, like, funny or anything, you know? You're just a troll who wanders in, making a completely irrelevant comment, and says "I just can't resist" as if the opportunity for a fantastic joke was just lying around on the ground waiting to be picked up, but all of us were too inhibited to do it, too restrained by our weak minds. Fortunately, you arrived -- like a brilliant globe of scintillating light in an drab, unfunny world -- and made the comment that we all wish we could have made. I'm wiping tears from my eyes at your brilliance.
Thank you, bluehouse. You have succeeded in bringing light and joy to our lives. I think we all thought for a moment that this was a GNOME and OS X discussion. Thank you for reminding us that OS zealotry is the sole domain of cretinous wannabes who actually attach some sort of major importance to what sort of platform they compute on.
And don't think for a minute that I'm pissed-off because you referred to two operating systems I use as "crappy." Don't score this as a victory for people at your end of the bell curve. I'm pissed off because you're unoriginal, unfunny, unintelligent, and *drum roll* an idiot. Please get off the internet, pronto. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't smell very good, though. You should take that into account before you deploy your solution.
- Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ok, this aint amazingly impressive, buts whats up with all the overreactions?
also, please redmbmer, there is a difference between "look like" and "look exactly the same as"
and to "look like" is a vauge term, to me this looks like OSX, it could look *alot* closer, but nevertheless - usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to brag but Im pretty sure that I have more money then you will see in a lifetime.
Personally I would never buy a mac I find them useless. Gentoo seems to run fine for me on $50,000 worth of pc's and laptop's. - stephen2417, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2... and tomorrow, Making GNOME look like OSX on a Mac!
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2drag it there?
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to start a desktop war, but install KDE, install Baghira, Superkaramba or KXDocker, switch your menus to the top bar, et viola. Not my cup of tea, but you can get closer to the look of OS X. Still not perfect, though, and misses out on the best benefits of OS X.
If you're really pining for the look and feel of OS X, save your pennies for the real thing. Something like a Mini or an iMac isn't really more expensive than buying an equivalent PC.
Truth be told, I use Baghira at home, but just for the window decorations. Baghira, Jaguar style, Milk buttons, NuoveXT icons, and...um...some style that looks more or less like Plastik by default but is more configurable; I can't remember the name right now. And on top of that, two Kicker bars set up to be more or less like the default Ximian GNOME setup and a colorscheme that I came up with to match UNO on the box I'm using to type this. Will I post it somewhere with the tag "Linux or OSX?" Maybe, because I think mine comes closer without looking a thing like OS X! :-P - volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12I stopped trying to waste hours trying to get my non-OSX desktop to look like OSX. Just save yourself the time (money) and buy Mac Mini if you just want the look, by the time you get your desktop to look or even kind of work like OSX you've got 50 programs running in the background emulating drop shadows, animations, etc.
Lame. - cg0def, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it might fool you if you've never used/seen OS X but this thing has really poor performance and worst of all takes forever to setup. Now if something takes this much effort to just setup it is clearly not a wise choise because it would take even more to fix when/if something messes up. ( and it will )
Anyway this is probaly a nice attempt only gnome is designed with totally different idea in mind and it would take a lot of coding to get it to look like OS X. A simple skin just won't cut it. - diggitydank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That looks like poop.
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10This is for the people that want to load Linux into a Macintosh...then turn around and make it look like OSX again.
- PhonicUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not very well done, could have at least used the XComposite extensions for drop shadows and superkaramba for a decent dock bar...
Much easier to do with KDE, looks better too. - RocketMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Brown is horrible, but the Human theme is well-designed, sans color choice.
This is just awful. - Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1man, i use kde - which i tink you will do what you want by default
in gnome, i think you can still do this, try right clicking on the bars/panels and seeing what options there are? - gonedig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heck,
I think OSX has many great points, but to make gnome act&look exactly as OSX its just a waste of effort.
I should know because I made at leats three OSX-like themes (T-ish series on gnomelook.org) and they are somewhat sucessful.
However, we sure should not throw away some great solutions that OSX shows us. It just needs to be implemented the right way. - zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know its just my opinion, but UIs should have a unique look, or at least try to look different enough that you don't find yourself thinking that you're using something else. This guys configuration in particular is atrocious.
Gnome can look so much better when you're not trying to force it to be something that its not. I think Dropline Gnome has possibly the best collection of themes for gnome, but then I'm biased. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2cosmetic look?? I've been testing aiglx-compiz on dapper for about a week - window freaky loven. Combining Engage with aiglx-compiz would provide even more OSX'ishn than metacity with the gdesklets bar.
nice link though - digg - Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the look of Puma & Jaguar over Panther & Tiger myself.....
I used to have a great looking OS X theme for KDE, but of course it still wasn't as polished as OS X is.
I'll add gas to the fire in the KDE & GNOME flame war, as I personally don't like GNOME.
This has got to be one of the best themes of OS X for GNOME that I've seen.
On the other hand, like people have said, it's missing a lot of the key elements that make OS X look great. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I'm not all that concerned with the Mac theme, but there are aspects of the GUI that I really like a lot better than Windows or any of the default Linux WM's. The biggest part is the dock, which I believe engage takes care of. Also, the 3 column layout in OS X's Finder makes it very quick for me to navigate. I'd love to find a replacement file manager for windows that would let me work that way, or a way to set up Nautilus to work that way.
Oh, and I forgot drop shadows. They make it a lot easier to see at a glance which window is on top of what. - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im presuming if OSX works on intel x86 then we can all use it now ?
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Way to prove your (lack of) knowledge.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Prefer KDE myself, configured to look like Mac OS X with
http://linuxgangster.org/modules.php?name=Content&file=viewarticle&id=15
About the same quality as this I'd say. - jgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Main reason for theming linux this way.
OSX Look+XGL+Beagle (Spotlight equivelent)+Skippy (adds expose feature not already included in XGL) = Eye candy and functionality that no one can touch not microsoft not Apple, all for free.
Oh yeah by the way your running bulletproof linux too.
Thats why I did it. - kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny. I manage to get all of my work done on only $2000 worth of Apple machines ;-) Maybe if you didn't have to spend $50 000 on systems and upgrades to systems just because you're compiling every single plugin from scratch, you could get a bit more done ;-)
Nah. I run Gentoo too (on a Mac, even, but not a new one). It's my favorite distribution. But it's just a server and it's going to stay a server. Gentoo is a nightmare on anything approximating a desktop system. - kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't spend much time typing them up at all. My typing speed varies between 90-120 words per minute, and your posts don't require too much thinking. says that post was 587 words, so it took me about 5-6 minutes to type that response. I'm also married, so I lost the ability to get laid a long time ago 8) As for drugs, I can't find any. If I was on drugs, I sure as ***** wouldn't be on here arguing with an idiot like you; I'd be listening to Pink Floyd, watching a movie, or wandering around a botanical garden chasing elves. My presence on Digg.com is a direct result of the War on Drugs, so feel free to complain to your county/parish's elected representative.
- --alex--, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Screenshot?
Sounds like quite a theme. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Very true to the original, indeed.
