- Stonekeeper, on 09/13/2008, -5/+27I dunno. I use my linux desktop on average about 12 hours a day. no, i'm not joking. I use Firefox for web browsing, open office or docs, i use terminator for a terminal, ssh is my best friend. what the hell else am i supposed to use? i can rip cds, dvd, yes i own them. i can print stuff, network stuff. i don't get it. what else am i supposed to do to make myself more productive? What? it's not possible on linux? did microsoft tell you? damn, i wish someone told me 10 years ago......
- 3MM3, on 09/13/2008, -1/+20Just curious - have all these people saying to just use Windows actually tried Linux? Do they have any idea what they're talking about, or are they just fanboys/trolls?
- Fixthemedia, on 09/13/2008, -1/+19I like my setup

- smotpoker, on 09/13/2008, -2/+16Except if you open the wrong email
Or go to the wrong website
Or let your kids use your system
Or you leave your system running more than 24 hrs
Or you have less than 2gb of ram
Or you install new vista drivers (that are somehow always buggy and always the vendors fault)
Or you want to use your iPod without iTunes
Or want to have common/useful apps installed out of the box
Or you sneeze
etc... - shakin, on 09/13/2008, -2/+15If you're trying to make Linux behave more like Windows you'll miss its key differences that set it apart and, in my opinion, make it more pleasurable to use.
- bbqsalad, on 09/13/2008, -1/+14You're a ***** lamer.
- Heywoodj, on 09/13/2008, -0/+13I think I wore out my bury button here.
This is a Linux thread properly posted under Linux/Unix.
If you aren't interested in Linux go away. - ThomasHung, on 09/13/2008, -3/+15If anyone needs any Linux help, let me know. If you live in California and want to pay for my gas, I'll go to your house and teach you anything you want to know. Or if you live farther away, send me a message!
I'm tired of all the FUD about Linux. - Fixthemedia, on 09/13/2008, -0/+12Thats how hot it is outside, not my hardware temps. I live in Arizona. ;)
- MadHarvey, on 09/13/2008, -1/+121. Window Manager: Ditch KDE, GNOME, etc.
Pointing and clicking is not efficient. You want to build a system around simple consistent key strokes with a light weight, super-fast windowing manger. Here are a few of my favorite: 1. Fluxbox 2. Ratpoison 3. wmii
I prefer the tiling window managers (2,3). They eliminate the need to use the mouse to manage your window layout at all, but some people don't "get them" (hence fluxbox). If I don't need X programs, I generally don't run X.
2. The editor
There is really only one choice for ultra-high efficient editing: VI (VIM). Its all about the keystroke system. I have seen some very fast emacs users, but they have gone to great lengths to overcome the cumbersome command sequences in order to do that. Always run the editor out of a shell. That way you can use command line tools to process your text while you are editing
3. The web
When you are working, it is highly advantageous to use a text-based browser. First, you won't be as tempted to look at entertainment sites (porn). Second, and more importantly, console web browsers and take data from standard input and dump pages to standard output for the shell. That means in an instant you can connect the content of web pages to all your scripts and tools to process the information and quickly access them in your editor.
I use w3m. It has the same keystroke system as VI, and is generally awesome all around.
4. Documents
Ditch WYSIWYG editors (Open Office), and learn LateX (or similar). This allows you to use all that time you spend getting efficient with VIM and command line tools to edit your documents. A Latex document looks 1000x better than a Word-like generated document, and your efficiency will increase by the same factor. All the time you spend fussing with layout and style will go away.
5. The shell
Everything you do in Linux should revolve around the shell. All the programs I listed above take input from standard input, and output to standard output. The shell is your means to connect everything together and use the great Linux command line tools for efficiency. GNU Screen is a must; the choice of shell is not.
6. Scripting Language
Learn one scripting language and learn it well. Make a commitment to yourself to be lazy. True laziness doesn't happen overnight. You have to work at it. When you find yourself doing something even a little repetitive, its time to write a script and banish that silly task from your life forever. Use Cron for things that need repeating with a known periodicity... I prefer Perl....
Well, thats a good start. I'm not sure why I just wrote an entire article in a Digg comment, but oh well. I've written longer Digg comments with far less content. :) - smotpoker, on 09/13/2008, -4/+15...and waste all of you time rebooting from crashes and re-installing due to infection or because OSes "just need to be reinstalled sometimes" *eye-roll* *
- bullox, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9But English has not understandable like nope.
- 3MM3, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9I love it!
- Fixthemedia, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9The problem with these blog posts is that it will not make you more productive. I love my linux install because I customized it to my fitting, and have been more productive ever since. You need to make it fit you, not what someone on a blog tells you to do. Thats why I love linux, I make it fit my own needs. (look up three posts to see what my desktop looks like. I went back to add some of my opinion, but the edit time was over)
I did digg the story, just because it does offer some good tools, but the tittle is misleading. Not (most) everyone needs those things. - nickpick, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8That's why only 12% of Microsoft's staff actually use Vista for development, eh?
- MadHarvey, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8Linux has features that make it FAR more productive than a Windows user could ever hope to be. Unfortunately, none of those features are talked about in most "Linux Productivity" articles.
Here is starter list of apps for TRUE Linux productivity:
Actually, on second thought. I'll reply to this comment so that the content doesn't take up an entire 3 screens of the main thread. Be warned the reply to this comment is very long. You might just want to skip... - goeric, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8At first I was like...94 degrees?!!!!?!
Then I noticed it was in Fahrenheit. First person I've ever seen not using Celsius to display hardware temperatures. - fatas, on 09/12/2008, -11/+19the whole article focuses on "Make Your Linux Desktop More Productive for a Windows User"
- aidave, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8Compiz has productivity-enhancing features, like "Place Windows", For example you can have all your Pidgin windows appear in one workspace. That stops you from dragging them around.
There are alot of frivolous features in Compiz, but that doesnt mean you should write off the rest of it. - DteK, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7my guess is the latter
- xero8472, on 09/13/2008, -3/+10Please walk into oncoming traffic.
- slythfox, on 09/13/2008, -3/+10Having multiple desktops makes me more productive. Having compiz installed makes me less productive.
- smotpoker, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7How's that? Aside from resource issues maybe, and depending on how it's configured, I can see how it would be useful.
Use it for the multiple desktops/workspaces rather than the window manager and/or use the window transparency and/or the umm... make-all-windows-smaller-and-line-them-up-so-you-can-see-them-all-at-once feature. I'm sure there's a few others that could be useful but I cannot remember what they are (I only got to play with it a few hours one day) - umbolo, on 09/13/2008, -4/+10You missed the point. Productivity isn't about how many diferent things you can do, but about speed, workflow, usability etc - for example: you can check news on websites by typing every single news source you follow in you browser's address bar, or you could on the other hand subscribe to RSS feeds and have much quicker overview of all various news sources. It essentially the same thing - browsing news - only via RSS it is much more convenient.
BTW I really don't understand why did you have to point out that you have DVD which you rip - really, nobody cares. - smotpoker, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6@umbolo
You might wanna doublecheck that list and keep in mind a few facts:
First and foremost, are you contending there is little or no risk of serious infection from opening emails or surfing in XP? In fact, XP is the most vulnerable of the lot he mentioned.
Second, he listed several versions of Windows so I felt compelled to point out flaws in all of them
Third Nlite and all of the software you mention should not be considered part of the Windows OS as they are not included from any retailer I know of (not that I follow such things). Unlike Linux distributions, which typically come with an abundance of officially supported software Windows does not, nor did Tom specify any therefore
Fourth, in *nix, user privileges prevent the kids from ***** up anything that isn't theirs. This normally isn't the case with Windows
Finally, your meager experience with one 10 year old version of Windows does not count for much. Like I said, I was critiquing multiple versions of the OS. Your reply and conclusion that I "FAIL" not only indicates your lacking knowledge of the 66% of the OSes you are defending but lacking intellect/comprehension all around.
Get two clues and call me in the morning - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -1/+7Hey, douche, did you know that you can filter out the "Linux" section instead of bitching about it? Btw, I just love the top articles in the windows section

- theaceoffire, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5So either your advising us to steal, or buy an overpriced OS, or buy an overpriced hardware/OS combo?
Why? - wispygalaxy, on 09/13/2008, -1/+6You can simply filter out the Linux/Unix section... Some of us find these articles about Linux helpful.
- aidave, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Remind me never to take computer advice from "mizike"
- nickpick, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Nice and clean.
- Technohamster, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Very individualistic.
- LastDitchHero, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Gnome-Do is very powerful and you could almost remove all menus and bars from your system if you learned all the names. Also remember Nautilus has a built in FTP Client, and use the OpenOffice Quickstart so OOo doesn't load so slow. Also while it is somewhat buggy Tasque will be great when it gets more stable. Also many To-Do lists work using Evolution Data Server. While Gmail is great I don't feel many people realize the advantages of a full on PIM suite such as Outlook or Evolution.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -2/+6yeah I don't know. I don't even understand the term "desktop system." I use FreeBSD on my laptop and people always complain BSD sucks for desktop usage. What? It runs lightning fast, 3D acceleration via binary nvidia driver, support for my internal wifi card in the kernel, good ACPI support, record amount of easily installed software in ports and binary packages. It runs like a semi truck, you can leave your system running for a decade without a restart. I couldn't possibly be more productive on any other system.
- aidave, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4haha, good one!!!
- smotpoker, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4@crampy
"Windows now has less vulnerabilities" - Which of the three versions mentioned in the original post are you referring to and is that with or without the extra software you have to waste time finding/configuring/running and dealing with registration/theft etc?
"Why do you get 160 updates a week on linux? Because it it needs constant patching"
Uh, no. That is because it comes with most of the software you need and more out of the box. Most of those "patches" (updates) are upgrades that add features. Unlike in Windows, the software is mostly free so the upgrades are as well. I guess i can see why you would be confused though since you are used to having to pay or at least manually find/download all upgrades.
"Windows is more secure."
"You say that you have a risk of infection by surfing the web and reading emails... Wrong (you retard). You are at risk from opening attachments and downloading viruses"
Haha, so are you saying there has never been an infection from just being connected to the network without a firewall or due to exploitation of IE and windows-specific firefox vulnerabilities? There have been a number of outlook vulnerabilities that could be exploited through email as well as the browser vulns that could be exploited through web-based emails. There are plenty that do not require manually downloading and executing a file. Opening a url or email is enough. One or two of such vulnerabilities has affected the Linux version of firefox too but they could not escape the restrictions of the user firefox was run by so they could not infect the rest of the OS
"What a surprise that there are more viruses and more idiots that download viruses in the first place using windows. Because linux is so fringe and so irrelevant, so few people bother writing viruses for it, but... still is more vulnerable."
It is true that market share is a factor Linux security record, however it is untrue that it is the only or even main factor. More people look at open source code so more people detect and report problems. In conjunction with the fact anyone who wants can fairly easily fix any security problems themselves and share it plus the security-conscious design from scratch all play major roles in Linux's security record.
"Your parental control argument is irrelevant"
I made a parental control argument? I was referring to the tendency of kids to ***** up settings and visit dangerous sites that could result in infection.
WTF is it that someone who has barely touched Windows in like 8-9 years knows so much more than some of it's most vocal advocates? Most of the ***** I know I've just overheard from colleagues or seen advisories/articles for. Granted I've engaged in and witnessed a few debates but not enough to know so much more than people who use Windows every day and should be aware of it's security flaws.
You must either be a moron or intentionally disingenuous. I'm not sure which but your hostility indicates both are pretty likely - thecheatah, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3"For example you can have all your Pidgin windows appear in one workspace"
I didnt know that!
Also i didnt know that alt+space launches katapult. WTF??? I feel like a noob. - Vadi0, on 09/12/2008, -2/+5Liferea (http://www.getdeb.net/search.php?keywords=liferea) ... for all your RSS needs. I love it.
- sfacets, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3Make it more productive... use the command line!
- bullox, on 09/13/2008, -1/+4You should write article called "Make Your Comments More Douchebaggish"
You are a master. - thecheatah, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3I wish I could steal it :-. How unindividualistic of me.
- klitzbtc, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3I'm sure they see it as some insult to their intelligence or "nerdiness", fact is that if you could get off the shelf games working on Linux, all these fanboys/trolls would be using Linux.
- sloppychris, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2If Avant Window Navigator ever comes out with real parabolic zooming it will own everything. Smooth like Parkay squeeze and spread.
- Atomic1fire, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2Make yourself more presentable,
hit yourself in the face with a pan - klitzbtc, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2I liked flock for a lot of reasons a long time ago, now there's way too much emphasis on social networking sites. I don't need my browser integrated into every single site I'm a member of, it becomes overwhelming (even for a browser) in a short period of time.
- slythfox, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2I do admit I was joking. I can no longer use multiple desktops with Linux without compiz. There's something about it that actually makes me feel more productive. Plus all the extra goodies can be quite useful, like both of you have mentioned.
