- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3omg every distro that isn't mine sucks!!!!
 yet another circlejerk. But, a) this digg is in French, so that doesn't help a huge portion of us, b) a lot of the "changes" it makes aren't truely helpful (changing logos just breaks compatibility, numlock at startup??, etc). But, I commend them for trying to "help". - debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"For a distribution that claims to make "Linux for People," they sure do miss a few very important things by default."
Last time I checked Windows doesn't bundle complete ATi or Nvidea drivers, or complete codec support as each reformat forces me to go to sourceforge to grab a codec pack before being able to watch video. - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The majority of the stuff on that list is obvious and expected of any major distro or is just nitpicking and giving haters something to bitch about. I haven't used a distro in some time that didn't require work on my part to get multimedia working. It's a shame that's the way it is but it isn't Ubuntus fault... Ubuntu is a damn good distro and 5.10 is a huge improvement over 5.04.
Anyway this program seems to download the codecs right off the Mplayer site and that would explain why it's been timing out all day. - veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think it's better you learn how to do this kinda stuff via the terminal, shows you how the file system is organized. And before you said it, theres a site where you can copy and paste all the commands
www.ubuntuguide.com, all of them apart from the fonts work(just change the directory). - Legionnaire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used Mepis for about a year before switching to Ubuntu, and I have to say, neither is better. They're both great.
- nolanistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1zonk3r, ctrl-alt-f1 will take you from x to a command line.
Crtl-alt f7 will get you back - xiangxianni, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1I am a ubuntu beginner,I wil try it in my ubuntu.
http://www.tips5.com/how-to-play-rmvb-movies-using ... - Observer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1anyone know where I can get a 3rd party driver for a External Maxtor One Touch II drive? I emailed Maxtor and they hinted that I could get a 3rd party driver from somewhere on the net.
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indeed. The correct term, ala Strongbad, is lappy.
- nacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks good. I know how to do all this very easily and quickly but anything that helps newcomers to Linux is a good thing.
- Leonffs, on 11/20/2009, -0/+0Easy ubuntu has been out for a while.
And, it's not really that great, most of the stuff it does can be downloaded using Ubuntu's built in software.
Hit Applications> Add Applications. - madd_matt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a gentoo user I tend to have to spend a lot of time getting stuff to go (although i think its worth it), but ubuntu does look like a good idea and i might try it one of my machines some day. A friend tells me that installing ubuntu was far easier than installing windows, but i don't think he's installed anything since windows 95. Still, install isn't a tough thing, and i think some people should not be afraid to install if they want to try something different. Not that I have anything against windows, I think it doesn't get enough credit for the great operating system it is, but for some tasks Linux is a great operating system! There are some things i just could never do or do as easily on windows.
Oh, this article is pretty useless though, no digg.
and the spellchecker should include "digg" as a word too. - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone know how to make ubuntu not book directly into x when booting up?
i'd also like to be able to exit out of x to the command line now and then too. anyone know how to do that w/o it wanting to logout and back into x again? - Phaedrus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well it certainly worked, at least it seems to have. But I still cannot figure out how to get my monitor into Widescreen.
- Phaedrus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for that. I'm certainly a Linux Newb, but I must say of all the distro's I've tried Ubuntu is the first one I've accually been unable to make "usable" Hopefully this will help.
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want to try the latest Ubuntu also, but it still won't won't detect all devices on any of my PCs. Mepis.org takes care of me nicely though.
- oneighturbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 i just pulled down Kubuntu, havent had a chance to drop it onto my other lappie.
- atf487, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ubuntu is totally great, its no so much for newbs as it is for anyone who likes simplicity.
- Misos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How can you be stupid enough not to get Ubuntu to work? If you have problems, visit the Wiki or the IRC channel for help.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@staticten LOL, i didnt mean like i hate Ubuntu, i dont i like it, i have it on live cd. i meant i didnt want to fuk up my computer because i am not a pro at that
- Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://placelibre.ath.cx/keyes/index.php/2005/09/11/37-easy-ubuntu-now-in-english
Now in English! I skimmed through the scripts, it looks clean. It'd be so incredibly easy to sneak a rootkit into something like this considering it has to run as root, and it's probably something a lot of users that are new to linux would be downloading and running. It looks like a handy little app though, digg! - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds like a very cool. I loves me some Ubuntu, this'll be even more of an improvement!
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"i would install ubuntu but i dont want to risk fukin up my computer"
because you don't know what you're doing!!!
Ubuntu is awesome! Stop saying it's garbage it you're not even using it (not just for a day or two). - Observer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0a 3rd party driver that works for Linux based system that is.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I just need video to work. I visit quicktime.com to see movie trailers and I can't get those to play. So I tried yahoo's movie trailers which use real and can't get those to play either.
- ech0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Ubuntu is garbage."
how is ubuntu garbage? - Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Expand on that, please.
- echimu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0* Debian is the BEST :D
* Fedora cutting edge crap
* Gentoo if you have time
Please add rest of your experiences - nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0ubuntu isn't terrible, it's just a silly idea to try and sell a debian distro to total newbs.
all newbs take note, if you want a distro that you can actually USE...get Linspire, Xandros or Mandriva, or perhaps maybe even SuSE.
and don't muck about with advanced distros like Gentoo, Debian or Slackware until you get the hang of things.
that is all. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Wow. So many things that could be included in the default install, were it not for software licensing *****: codecs, proprietary 3D drivers, etc. For a distribution that claims to make "Linux for People," they sure do miss a few very important things by default. That said, they have done very well for themselves so far.
- unfun72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I have another way to make Unbuntu usable:
1. Burn ISO to CD
2. Place Burned CD face down on a flat surface.
3. Place cold drink on top of CD.
(I never could get unbuntu to work in any other way) - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0"Ubuntu is garbage."
please - jon_k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0"Ubuntu is garbage."
I second that. Try SimplyMEPIS: www.mepis.org - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0i would install ubuntu but i dont want to risk fukin up my computer
