- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27Good news. Russia's schools will be moving to Linux as well, according to the latest news from CNews.
I think that Canonical is working on having the whole of Georgia (the country) to Linux, as well. - Senn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21I'd much prefer that than the current state in the UK where I've had several people see Linux (any distro) and say "Your Windows is different!"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13At the end of the day it's just another OS for them. They will still do the same thing, check email, browse web, watch porn, write documents etc etc.
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9What the heck are you doing spending time on Digg then?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Linux is really taking off all around the world. America should get it now before we are left behind.

By the way i'm keeping a list of links for posts like this. My list is growing every day... - KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10and so continues the slow and steady decline of Microsoft...
- Stevethegreat, on 10/19/2007, -1/+6No you don't get it, you -barbarians (people who did not speak Greek in ancient Greece time, people who was saying "bar bar")- call us Greeks instead of the proper Hellenes and our country Greece instead of the proper Hellas but that's nothing, you rarely have heard any Greek talking about this stuff. We couldn't care less for FYROM's name, it just so happens to be the name of (most) of the Northern Greece part (which is distinctively different from the rest of Greece), it's about the same as Belgium had been called "Holland" (the Western part of The Netherlands), or Ireland "Wales", or Mexico "Washington" and so forth. You get the idea now?
Also about the "nationalist" remarks, from the 1920s onwards our country has never attacked any neighbor, in fact Greece is the only really peaceful country in the Balkan peninsula. - lonnieh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4sounds like you need help filtering out the linux/unix section. GTFO idiot
- jpetrov, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4off the topic: blame Canada (c) South Park :)
on topic: Linux makes the children free - LinuxKitty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Linux is the logical choice for "poorer" countries or areas, and that is a strong source of motivation. The fact that getting familiar with Linux is also of a higher educational value than working with Windows, is a nice side effect, and I hope more countries or states will follow, especially in the west. Looking at the hardware requirements of Vista makes it fairly apparent that most schools' budgets simply cannot afford if, even if they were given Vista for free. So if the choice is between running a dated OS (98 and soon XP) on the existing hardware or getting a modern, up-to-date and actively supported OS like Linux (Ubuntu makes good use of lower-end hardware), then I don't think it's a contest, Microsoft hurt themselves in the educational sector with ridiculous hardware requirements.
- Faiakes, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Greece as a modern country.
The Hellenic nation is one of the oldest, if not the oldest nation in Europe. - arangel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6So, no space left on the Internet without Greek propaganda bots flaming. Read the news pal, you lost. :)
- Faiakes, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3I repeat from above:
What if swedes started calling norway 'west sweden' or worse the Russians all of scandinavia 'west russia'.
This is how this ***** gained credibility in the first place. Past Greek goverments did nothing and now people take that crap as a matter of fact!
That is why you should care. Let people tell a lie long enough and it becomes the 'truth'. - mikedoth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I think he's just pissed that his favorite OS is slowly loosing share.
- KevinJim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Are you out of your ***** mind ? Do you know anything about history ??? Greece was formed as a Country typically !!!
- amfantasy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4When a country switches to debain, ubuntu, etc means their too cheap. When a company switches to Red Hat, Novell, Mandriva, etc. their using it because it's better then what they were currently using.
- lazyrussian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You must not be using linux. And you should cavare...Since Linux is starting to engulf governments and countries, sooner or later thos big corporations will die off and all you'll have is linux.
- Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2WTF? Where on earth do you get that trash from?
How can you annex your own land?
What macedonian language? you mean greek with a northern accent?
Unless you like to call slavic languages macedonian. - Faiakes, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3ah... the trolls have arrived...
- CircleFusion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey, I was considering doing the same thing.
Do you mind sharing that list?
Put it up on del.icio.us or something? - silfiriel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what propaganda are you talking about, the one where your greek so called democratic government fed you with lies? you are the one talking of invasions and seizure's of ports, that's how propaganda works , with FEAR
http://digg.com/politics/A_letter_to_the_UN_from_M ... - Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nice work there trying to feed us a biased wikepedia page that was pulled down as a fake...congrats
a) The Greek state feeds its people with lies? Did it also do that to prestigious universities all over the world? How is it they teach the same history as in Greek schools? Coincidence perhaps? Only uneducated idiots fell for your claims.
b) Are you by any chance talking about the claims in your constitution that the 'land to the south' belongs to you and that you have the right to take it...what do you expect with that kind of language?
Or did you really think that the Greek state would fear you?
This kind of bravery of course is not accidental. You had support to make those outrageous claims. The support of a nation who has vested interests in destabilising the region...no need for names, we all know which country that is.
Oh, and about Canada, we all know that there are a lot of slavs living there who applied political pressure to the Canadian government to accept the 'Macedonian' claim. - Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It was a temporary name because it was fictitious of you to claim such a name.
You believed your own propaganda. Check a good history book about when the claim about 'Macedonians' started, you'll see the hand of the communist machine behind it.
That propaganda was meant to serve as a justification for aninvasion of Greece and seizure of the port of Thessaloniki so that the great Yougoslavia would gain access to the sout port. - Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Again, where do you get this trash misinformation from?
- Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Indeed and you like to ignore the history that created those 'maps'. Read my comment above about Tito and then think for a minute.
If I create a map of Britain and put the word France all over it, does it make it true? - marklarznexyne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1nice to see you contribute something constructive to the discussion...
- xerodeth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4this is your version of the history, here is our version here: http://www.historyofmacedonia.org/ this isn't even about history this is about spreading Linux and bringing M$ down. but go ahead make it political. George W Bush already has said Macedonia has its history.
- vertinox, on 10/19/2007, -5/+6This is more of that Balkan Nationalist FUD!
Get over it! They can call themselves whatever they like and you can call themselves whatever they like. In Germany they refer to themselves as Dueschtland, but they don't get all upity when we call them Germany in English discussion. In Burma they call their country Maygnar (or however you spell it)
Its just a damn name so get over it. Too much crazy nationalism in that part of the world. - spiritfly, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1He'd better be
- Zagorka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Silfriel, you pulling crap out of your ass. Exodus 1948? Honestly don't make me laugh. What *****.. Macedonian Language....
- Faiakes, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2If you're gonna use sources please use reputable ones.
Macedonia was never a country to be annexed, it's a region in northern Greece.
Please ask a university professor or something. - Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So claiming the truth is nationalist? Please...
- Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really? Lost what? And who won?
Why is the Greek sid of the story propaganda? Have you actually done any historical research into the subject which proves otherwise?
FYROM simply decided to call itself Macedonia. They have no historical link to it other than the fact that they moved into the region in Late Antiquity.
If that is enough to make one Macedonian then I must be english since I live in the UK... - Pixelante, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Anyone who is miserable enough to be an OS fanboy should commit suicide out of shame.
- Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really? You seem to undestimate the Greeks. If there is one thing Greeks are well known for, it's defending their land.
Even the great Yougoslavia knew that all too well. It would never be able to hold any greek land for long.
There were never territorial claims? Yougoslavia never explicitly made such claims, FYROM, however, .....aah, I see... the usual tactic of erasing and re-writting history....
Unfortunately for you those claims were put in the first FYROM constitution so they are a matter of public record. - motang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apparently more than you think since it made it to the front page.
- Faiakes, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2The USA only does what in it's interest not what is right.
Of course they have recognised them with that name. It's just another attempt to destabilise another region and make a killing selling weapons and establishing their military presence further.
They already have built a large base in FYROM, with McDonalds and all the standards of American civilization... - jakswa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1haha, in interesting thought, but more humorous than it is supportable.
- Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree too, it is in an excellent choice and I wish other countries would follow suit.
- ahac, on 10/19/2007, -4/+5Many countries recognize Macedonia by this name including the USA. If your country doesn't... thats not diggs problem.
- Faiakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1May I assume you;re from Norway?
What if swedes started calling norway 'west sweden' or worse the Russians all of scandinavia 'west russia'.
This is how this ***** gained credibility in the first place. Past Greek goverments did nothing and now people take that crap as a matter of fact!
That is why you should care. Let people tell a lie long enough and it becomes the 'truth'. - murex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Can u tell please tell me what kind of language is macedonian? I thought Alexander and all of his ancestors spoke Greek. I don't argue with you in the fact that you live in the geographic area of Macedonia, but "macedonians" is a science fiction project. In recent history you have Bulgarians, Serbs, Croatians, Albanians, Greeks but no Macedonians.
Just check everywhere besides your country's data for Macedonia, it was a greek tribe (participating in ancient olympic games, only greek tribes did then) many years ago before Slavs came up. That's a fact. Open a encyclopedia and see for you self. Don't take for granted what they tough in school. I don't - xerodeth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3i guess you like monopolies?
- Pixelante, on 10/19/2007, -2/+2That's "Deutschland" and "Myanmar" respectively. And yes, it doesn't matter much. Not even the Dwarves got uppity when the Elves referred to Khazad-dûm as "Moria".
- silfiriel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0yes in the UN we are FYROM because when Macedonia declared it's independence, Greece put an embargo on Macedonia because of the name. Our economy was weak anyway , we had to compromise and the compromise was a TEMPORARY agreement with that included the name FYROM. I think 15 years were temporary enough, it's time to correct the mistake.
BTW there are some cool UBUNTU wallpapers on
http://cleanwallpapers.blogspot.com - wassim2k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2A school in Guyana, the one near the Mexican-style restaurant, has a class in there with about 30 kids. They're moving to Linux. COOL F%$K MS$$ LINUX FTW !!LOL!!!! PWNED.
- silfiriel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0that northern part of Greece that's called Macedonia was annexed by Greece in 1913, from Macedonia and then assimilated the macedonian citizens by force, sending thousands of people to the greek prison islands because they were speaking macedonian. and let's not forget the exodus in 1948.
Don't talk for things you don't know. Take a history book, take a greek history book before the 70s and you'll find maps where both regions are called Macedonia. - silfiriel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0How about this historical link
that northern part of Greece that's called Macedonia was annexed by Greece in 1913, from Macedonia and then assimilated the macedonian citizens by force, sending thousands of people to the greek prison islands because they were speaking macedonian. and let's not forget the exodus in 1948. - silfiriel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0maybe you can find that part where that northern region of Greece that's called Macedonia was annexed by Greece in 1913, from Macedonia and then assimilated the macedonian citizens by force, sending thousands of people to the greek prison islands because they were speaking macedonian. and let's not forget the exodus in 1948.
- filipvidinovski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Believe me, if ex-yu wanted Thessaloniki - it would get Thessaloniki. In reality, there were never any territorial claims of any sort by Yugoslavia or (Republic of) Macedonia towards Thessaloniki or any other part of the Greek Macedonia (northern Greece) or any other part of Greece.
