BSD's Licensing allows you to use the kernel or it's components (ergo it's not stealing), in fact parts of BSD are found in Linux and NT kernels. - quomen, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8Value for the money doesn't mean it's the best OS for everybody. And Linux is free. So it's like dividing by 0. Linux has an undefined value for the money.
- HonoredMule, on 07/21/2008, -2/+11I'm not having any trouble with Vista. Heck, I'd even install it, were it free.
Vista is the perfect replacement for not having (but needing) a Windows OS. But it's got virtually no merit over existing Windows installs. Though I do understand that it is free an I shouldn't complain. so guess what. I don't. I just use Vista which I can complain about because it costs money. - directrix13, on 07/21/2008, -3/+17You are saying the inability or laziness of other coders who can't code cross-platform is an issue with Linux? DirectX 10 support isn't there because DirectX 10 is a proprietary Microsoft specific pseudo-standard. It will never be on Linux, and if you want to bitch to somebody about it bitch to Microsoft for not working at all with others. The only inadequacies in Linux are those presented by the rest of the world being too infantile to cooperate with a system that is nothing but pure progress. While proprietary land reinvents the wheel that only works on their cars for personal gain, open source software marches on to the next solution.
- Naieve, on 07/21/2008, -5/+10@directrix13
How dare Microsoft not give away is proprietary software that it spent money to develop to a competitor who if had it would be able to steal a large portion of their market.
Call me when Linux becomes viable for hardcore gaming. - directrix13, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5@Naieve:
Way to miss the point. Linux isn't a competitor. At some point in time the basic underpinnings upon which all computers are established should be so solidified and unchanging as to actually sell it would be considered a scam. That time is pretty much here. Desktop methodologies have not changed in quite a while. Why do you insist on defending a company that makes all its money reselling the same thing to you over and over again? At some point software should become free for the public good. And who is going to be stealing GPL'd or even LGPL'd code? - Kyrato, on 07/21/2008, -4/+0@directrix13: "It will never be on Linux, and if you want to bitch to somebody about it bitch to Microsoft for not working at all with others. but it is useful once you get used to it. watch:
$ sudo apt-get install kopete kolourpaint gsynaptics firefox3 w32codecs libdvdcss2 abiword gnumeric vlc k3b amsn wifi-radar blender compiz ccsm
i just installed 15 programs with one command. try that on Vista and end up googling around for ages for apps, getting viruses etc. Epic Fail. And you paid how much for your new, shiny, slow and buggy Vista machine? Ha.
(plus you can do the same as the command above in seconds, 15 clicks or so in the completely simple graphic program Synaptic) - Memitim, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Linux can be a pain in the ass sometimes but I can't deny the sheer nerd joy of installing little more than a kernel, some drivers, and apt and then getting a fully functional operating system just by typing:
apt-get install xmms
and answering some questions when prompted.
Yeah, that's more of a tribute to the power of apt but nothing else compares to the ridiculous convenience of apt for managing software and I can only really enjoy that with Debian-based distros. - directrix13, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3@Kyrato:

"Linux isn't a competitor."
Yes it is.
If Linux wasn't a competitor they would be offering to load linux dual boot with a paid for Windows partition. Instead they offer to eliminate Windows and the cost of a license by just giving people linux.
UNIX is the competition. OSX is based of a derivation of it. Ubuntu and others are starting to make inroads in the market.
What company gives away its trade secrets to the competition for free?
TNSTAAFL!!!! - 0xception, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2@Naieve
"If Linux wasn't a competitor they would be offering to load linux dual boot with a paid for Windows partition."
who would offer this? linux isn't a company... And there are several companies out there (i'm sure you'll find them if you google) that offer custom setup and installs for you. But as a manufacture or retailer of computers why would you put two Operating systems on your machine when your selling it to a customer. If they really want a different OS (and here's the beautiful part) they can reinstall anything they want over the OS that comes preinstalled.
I personally think NO operating system should be installed by default, or allow the customer to choose custom installs but ALWAY have the option (default option) to have no OS. otherwise you will inevitably end up with a situation that we are currently in. Inferior products (IMHO) being forced on the consumer creating a monopoly based on user dependence (as if it were an addictive substance) on their product...
that in short seem to be MS's business policy and practice. Look most linux people are only so "zeolous" because they have a fairly simple and unobtrusive goal, have equal respect by hardware and software manufactures as Microsoft or OSX (in otherwords they would either like support or have companies allow the community to support their products for them). But the sad predicament is that this is not possible (as clearly stated by most of the industry) without a LARGE or at least extremely vocal user group. Once you can show to the industry that money can be had then they will move. But how do you go about moving users away from their addiction to the MS product line to the open source world? well you have to be vocal, you show every chance you get where and why the open source product is more mature, and stable, flexible and overall better then the MS version.
but then you obviously will get blow back from all the windows addicted people (and also from those who actually genuinely support their product) who refuse to accept the inadequacies of linux (caused by lack of support from the industry), but will blindly ignore those same inadequacies in their MS product. why? so they wont be wrong i guess, makes them feel like they picked the right OS from the start (as if it were a game or some sort of mistake that people would mock you for otherwise) or they are to stubborn to just give linux a shot, try to learn it, have a little fun computing. but mostly it seems that most who try it and at the FIRST place they get confused or stuck decide it's crap because they can't understand it. as if the very first time they used windows they knew how to do everything.
look my wife was the exact same way, REFUSED to try linux said she couldn't because she had to use photoshop or some other random piece of software, i told her to just try it... and if she had problems to ask me and i'd help her figure out where thing were... she hated the GUI of gnome and the dual panels... but after a single day she was used to it, found all the applications figure out how to install gimp (she was still worried about using gimp...but she's used to it now) she uses linux every day now for about a year she even reinstalled and upgraded to a newer version. she's not a computer geek (she's more of a fashion geek). but now when ever she see's a windows computer she's like "Wow i can't believe i used to use that". when ever her parents call for computer support she, afterwords, reflects on how much easier it's gotten, and how she never actually thinks about her computer anymore... it's a tool that just works. Does this mean linux is perfect everywhere? no of course not, but the great thing about linux is the more users there are the faster/better it gets. and this is one thing windows has not been able to do. - Kyrato, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1@directrix:

- SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/21/2008, -2/+8Ironically, I've never had to download a driver for Linux. Everything has worked in Fedora7-9 without any intervention by me. Even sort of weird things like card readers and an old PCMCIA Mobile Broadband card I came across were detected and installed without even so much as a "New device detected" notification.
Say what you will about Linux and it's drawbacks, but driver support is simply not one of them anymore with only a couple exceptions:
1. Graphics Drivers (Especially ATI)
2. Certain wireless Drivers
Those are both the result of patent holders trying to maintaning closed standards. Even still, these issues are improving daily despite greedy copyright holders.

oh and in that analogy bikes are faster, use less fuel and stuff like that. - kcap122, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7Also, much like a bicycle compared to a car, actually trying to get anywhere in linux will take at least five times as long as doing it in windows.
- 0xception, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1sounds like a challange... lets test that
here's your mission: install a sudoku game
i'll go first,
1) Click System->Admin->Add/Remove Applications
2) Search "sudoku"
3) Click gnome-sudoku package
4) Click install
5) Play the game.
now can you seriously do that faster in windows (if you truethfully name each and every step?) look this is an obvious example, and some things windows can do faster and better, most of those are due to the lack of the industry treating linux as an equal (and thus what pisses off and creates the linux zealots) but seriousy your perception of linux is either out dated or from that of a linux new comer (and any new comer to any OS or Computer would be slow) - heavyal, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Not a Linux hater here (my primary home desktop runs Ubuntu among other machines), but that kind of a test (by 0xception) only shows that there are mediocre options available for Linux users. If you take it from the other direction, perhaps someone wants to install a '3d version of Sudoku' (google it, they are out there), your choice of platform is limited to Windows for support of such an application. Sure, you could fire up WINE and muck through the process of running the install and then mess around with overrides and maybe eventually get the app to run, but in Windows all you'd need to do is click your installer and not have to worry about any of this (system requirements should of course be taken into consideration regardless of os).
So sure, there are multitudes of applications that can be installed and run easily on Linux, especially if you run a Debian based distro where apt is available. But that doesn't qualify the applications available on Linux as better than those available on Windows. - 0xception, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1yes and that was my point... Some things are faster/better and others arn't... however the lack of available software, drivers, and support from manufactures can all be tracked down to the simple lack of a user base before those people add linux support. So it's a catch 22... one of the sides have to break first before it before it gets much better. :) all that's left as an option is to try and convinces people to break first as it seems cooperation, software dev companies and the likes wont go first.

What is the deal with people who have time to be religious about their operating systems? it's not like any of them are good enough to be worth it.
When i can verbally tell my computer what to do, and it does a good enough job that i don't have to try to tell it in a different way, then i will get zealous about my OS, and not until.
- Tyrghast, on 07/21/2008, -10/+3Yeah linux is great, especially when my friend (who is a computer science major who has been programming for years) switches back over to linux yesterday for like the 8th time and this time he can't manage to get anything to work, from ventrilo to TF2.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10Linux is not for Ventrilo or TF2.
That's like buying a waffle iron and complaining that it makes rotten pancakes.
Tell your friend to save himself a lot of pain and just duel-boot. - carlosos, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2So Linux is great because it doesn't run windows software so well?!? That must mean that a OSX is even better because it can't even run windows software at all?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10Linux is not for Ventrilo or TF2.

Linux should be that bicycle that you lay down to ride and have to ride yourself. - ulmedas, on 07/21/2008, -27/+69A lot of folks have an inaccurate idea of how the mac OS works. It is based on the Mach kernel and BSD, which forces them to leave it fairly open.
Yah, apple's hardware is sometimes stupidly closed off, but it's software is much more open than Windows, but simple enough for folks who do not have the time to learn command line based computing to get to work.- vegr, on 07/21/2008, -1/+15I don't quite know about Mach, but BSD definitely doesn't force them to open at all, it's Apple's choice.
- ExRe, on 07/21/2008, -19/+44How is their software more open than Windows?
I can't run it (easily) on anything other than Apple built desktops/laptops. Windows can run on practically anything.
Or you forget how they locked out developing for the iPhone? Even went so far as to brick iPhones on updates to users who had unlocked them.
I don't think I'd ever say Apple software is "open". - ulmedas, on 07/21/2008, -16/+5@ExRe: You are free to build your own machine that runs apple software. The reason you can run Windows on most PC compatible machines is that they are built to run windows.
Plenty of folks have gotten Mac OS X running other intel machines:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/122207/pirated_vers ...
for some examples.
I am not talking about other products, I am talking about the thing that is comparable, that is the operating systems. Not other devices.
@vegr: Though I am not precisely sure of the legal requirements, Darwin was build from several open source projects including FreeBSD. As such, I am fairly certain that Apple has some obligation to publish parts of the code which are derived from those projects. Regardless of whether or not I am correct, Apple, inc. did release the Darwin core under a license which the Free Software Foundation (FSF) approved as a free software license. - ADINSX, on 07/21/2008, -2/+28@ulmedasulmedas:
1. You may want to reread the BSD license. Apple does NOT have to keep their modifications open, and they don't (at least not anymore). The BSD license is NOT copyleft like the GPL, so Apple is not required to publish their modifications.
2. Apple does NOT allow people to put their software on third-party hardware. The OSX EULA states clearly that putting the OS on non-Apple-branded hardware is a license violation, and they have recently begun to sue people over it (see: Psystar).
Apple is not even a remotely open company, other than the fact that they leech off of open-source projects. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/21/2008, -2/+14"The reason you can run Windows on most PC compatible machines is that they are built to run windows."
Google the term "IBM Compatible."
Computers aren't built to run Windows. Windows is built to run on computers. That is to say "IBM Compatible" computers. It's what made the success of the Windows OS possible in the first place.
OSX is not designed for anything but specific Mac hardware. That comes with it's drawbacks and advantages, but mostly it means OSX runs fantastic on Apple stuff and like trash on everything else. - ruddy, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Apple isn't MORE open. They just USE open source, they're not releasing their source... If i give you some binaries does it matter what source I used if I don't release it? no...
- Culyt, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2So I guess I can recompile an OSX kernel then?
No
Because the OSX kernel is closed, its the Darwin kernel thats open, which lacks all the important bits. - Ovalteen, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1OS X running on only Apple hardware is nothing more than Apple's answer to copy protection. Even if you do install one copy of OS X on a hundred computers, Apple is still getting a cut from the hardware so they don't care. It doesn't make OS X less open any more than WGA and activation make Windows less open because you can only run your copy of XP on one machine.
In any case, both of those features (WGA and Apple's lockin) pertain to flexibility, not openness. The existence of such features in an open source operating system wouldn't make it any less open, as you'd still be able to remove them and compile your own build. If you took those features out of Windows or OS X, it wouldn't suddenly be open for you to tinker with, but it would be more flexible.
- vegr, on 07/21/2008, -1/+15I don't quite know about Mach, but BSD definitely doesn't force them to open at all, it's Apple's choice.
- NLS87, on 07/21/2008, -28/+9What???
You can even look through the Mac's kernel, and build your own kernel on your system and use it.
Windows doesn't even comes close.
Also, Mac's don't broke.- Gneisbaard, on 07/21/2008, -1/+11Macs broke alright. Buy one, and you're broke.
But you are right. MacOS is much better than windows in most aspects. (not that i've ever used it, for the mac fanboys have antagonized me good and proper). - NexusV2, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9Macs may not break (which I'm sure they do every now and then).

- Gneisbaard, on 07/21/2008, -1/+11Macs broke alright. Buy one, and you're broke.
- sheepster, on 07/21/2008, -6/+141I hate how everybody compares mac to windows - like microsoft has something to do with ***** pc configurations. Mac is hardware + software, MS is only software.
- coyote1284, on 07/21/2008, -2/+78I hate "Mac vs. PC". Any computer meant for personal use, by it's very definition *is* a PC, irrespective of the operating system installed.
- ADINSX, on 07/21/2008, -29/+9@coyote1284:
"PC" refers to "IBM compatible PC". Learn some computer history. - edwartica, on 07/21/2008, -13/+3That's what she said.
- Smitty93, on 07/21/2008, -1/+28@ADINSX, so "PC" refers to "IBM compatible PC."
How can a definition of a term have itself in its own definition?
Granted that PC is now used mainly in reference to a Windows machine, but PC itself stands for personal computer. And just because people misuse it now a days and make false claims about knowing computer history, doesn't make it fact. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8@ADINSX: Nice arguement, but since Apple moved to the Intel framework their hardware can now be considered "IBM Compatible." There is not difference anymore. In 1999 you may have been able to make a case, but PPC Macs are (thankfully) a distant memory for the most part.
- awhiteflame, on 07/21/2008, -6/+6@Smitty93:
If I make a robot which will stand behind a desk, talk to clients and perform banking operations, I have made, literally, an automated teller machine. But I have not made what we call and recognise as an "ATM". I think we can all agree on this.
Just because "PC" literally initialises "Personal Computer" does not mean that it can't have a very specific meaning in real usage, and come from a longer variant (e.g., "IBM Compatible PC"). - zzz@tkz, on 07/21/2008, -1/+9@Smitty the same way that PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor :o?
- tnoy, on 07/22/2008, -1/+4@Smitty93 "How can a definition of a term have itself in its own definition?"

- tecunx, on 07/21/2008, -2/+8True, or it could look like a Ford Pinto with a jet engine.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4It's true of all OSes and all PC hardware. Even most Macs contain parts from several different countries and manufacturers. A well planned and strictly maintained mosaic of parts, maybe, but a mosaic still.
Windows had parts of old Windows versions in it. OSX has parts of NeXT and BSD. Linux is mostly a mesh of GNU apps, a variety of Desktop environments, and a consistent kernel.
- tao52nyc, on 07/21/2008, -23/+13Why is anybody feeding the troll? Anybody who actually knows something about Macs knows you can get under the hood as deep as you want to "when something goes wrong"...of course, that doesn't happen as often with Macs... ;^)
(NOW who's the troll??? LOLOL) - Nickdotnet, on 07/21/2008, -21/+20I think the douche is the one who doesn't know how to get under the hood.

http://www.ubuntu.com/
What do I win? - carlosos, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2merreborn, did you ever try SuSE Linux? I can't think of anything easier than that but I heard that Ubunto is also supposed to be easy to use.
If you want to install something than you just select in a menu the software you want (that automatically gets updated), or you click on a link in the browser that starts the download and installs the software, or you download the installer or if you have some special beta software that you really need to have than you use the source code and type "./configure" "make" "make install".
I'm not sure about the Mac but I believe like Windows it doesn't have the first two choices that I mentioned which are the easiest ones.
After installing it works pretty much like any other OS with double or single click to start the software and clicking on the X to close it. Sounds easy to me... - AngelBunny, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3@carlosos: osx has both of those options as well as a couple of others. I could be wrong but I think osx has the most ways to install something because of its unixness.
install from source:
1) normal ./configure make sudo make install
2) port install
3) using gcc directly.
from binary:
1) double click on the binary and it works. rarely does it need to be installed like windows programs.
2) drag program to applications folder then double click on it.
3) run an installer. this is rare and is only for bigger things like xcode, ms office, ....
There are a couple of others ways too. Compiling from source it is near identical to most linux distros. Binary (more common) is easier because there is no installation required.
and now you know ;)

- JasonHaley, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Kennmac and Lewji, I think by "faster" he means just faster.

no one's claiming that Windows or Linux just work, so there is really no need - TheFinaleofSeem, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Just works is not referring to never breaking, you idiot. It's more a reference to most commodity devices not needing drivers. No waiting for the annoying taskbar popups to tell you it's ready, etc. It's an exaggeration, but you get the point. Saying it "just works" means "it wont break" only makes you look like an idiot. But this is Digg, so idiocy is usually the norm...

- jabberwolf, on 07/21/2008, -9/+8Why bother with OSX then?
It's simply Linux (really Berkley OS) locked down to a particular hardware vendor.
They will never allow it to be virtualized, thus its on its way out in about 4 years... 1-2 year completely out of networks.- eddieroger, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4They already have allowed it to be virtualized, and MediaTemple is publicly beta testing Leopard Server virtualized through VMware.
- thallenthur, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4Well, it's not Linux, it's Mach kernel with BSD extensions which makes it closer to the original Unix. Linux is just an implementation of the POSIX standards.
- klaas4, on 07/21/2008, -8/+0Why bother? Because Mac OS X is much more user-friendly than Linux. We have more user-friendly software than Linux and Windows, and they all work together. (iLife)
That's why! - ksgant, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6Ah...where have I heard the old "it's on it's way out" before. Oh yes, people for the past 20 years saying how Apple is dying and won't last and this is the nail in the coffin and blah blah blah.
I personally build my own computers and use Linux, but I'll never deny how much Apple has gotten right. Yes, they've gotten a lot of things wrong...but show me one company that's been around for a while that hasn't. I also am amused that for so long the windowing themes for the different managers in Linux had so many "Aqua" themes....many of them the most popular. Granted, more mature Linux-native themes have come along now, but it was pretty funny for a while hearing Linux fans bashing Apple and OS X, yet trying so hard to get them to work and feel just like OS X.
I've been into computers since 1979, and in all that time I've still never fathomed the computer vs computer or "OS war" mentality. Who cares? - pplude92, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Not completely true. The new OSX 10.6 adds ZFS support. This is a great FS for a hypervisor. I think that OSX will make the transition very smoothly to a virtualized OS
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1UNIX (BSD included) is NOT Linux. They're similar, but not the same thing. And it's on it's way out because it's not open and virtualizable? Completely out of networks? You're a bloody toolbag.

- OneStepAhead, on 07/21/2008, -2/+5lol a newegg hard drive hey... didnt realize newegg was making hardware now. the fact is you have way more options with a PC then you ever will on a Mac (hardware and software). When I can start custom building my own mac without using some hack where i need a dongle or 1 specific mobo, Ill consider it. If Apple was as cool as you all say it is they would let you run OSx on whatever computer you want instead of some overpriced iComputer. Im sure its quite easy to get your OS to run stable when you are dealing with such limited hardware availability.
- tocsy, on 07/22/2008, -2/+0@ iNezy13: I'm with you brother! People need to stop bickering. It's pointless: people will use whatever OS they use for whatever reason, and rarely will they listen if someone with an overinflated ego tries to change their mind.
- sonnybobiche, on 07/21/2008, -2/+32And just like a monster truck, linux requires you to know what you're doing before you get in, or disaster could result. Just to be on the safe side, though, you're strapped in tight until you hit the "sudo" button.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 07/21/2008, -0/+14sudo button, right next to the Esc key?
- ut2k4king, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7Look, I don't know about you but quite a few people have tried Windows without knowing what they were doing and royally ***** things up. Imagine some guy poking around his computer, trying to free up some space and deciding that he'd never really used System32. It's just as easy to ***** up a Windows computer as it is a Linux one, the ways are just different.
- JonLatane, on 07/21/2008, -14/+6Actually, it was a lot easier to upgrade both the memory and the hard drive in my Macbook than in my Thinkpad T43. For the memory, there was only one latch to deal with per DIMM and the hard drive installation... well, let's just say that the disparity in difficulty was much, much larger. (Check out Lenovo/IBM's and Apple's instructions if you want to see how much harder it is with the PC.)
And IBM is known for their good craftsmanship (and yes, this is an IBM model, not Lenovo)!
I also got the Macbook cheaper than a similarly-equipped Dell at the time (and WAY cheaper than the more-poorly-equipped Thinkpad, which I got as part of a scholarship). And using UNIX utilities (which, as a developer, is pretty important to me) isn't a bitch and a half like it is if you try to use Windows/Cygwin.- gaqua, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Just be glad you never had to replace the hard drive on a Macbook Pro. Such a pain in the ass.
- gaqua, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Just be glad you never had to replace the hard drive on a Macbook Pro. Such a pain in the ass.
- Kyrato, on 07/21/2008, -17/+3What happens when you update you drivers? Does it work 90% of the time? or do you have to use the ROLL BACK DRIVER function to get the damn thing to work again 90% of the time?!
I use a Macbook with 10.5 on it because I don't trust windows based laptop drivers.
I also have a PC box simply because it is cheaper abeit less reliable.
Intel Q6600, Nvidia 9800gtx, Asus P5E3 Deluxe.- TheStrongForce, on 07/21/2008, -1/+9I've never used the rollback driver feature.
- caseycoold, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Um, they are drivers for Windows, but by Windows. If they were hardwarre nazis like mac, then there's would be tight too.
But you know us regular PC users: we like variety. Silly, huh? - Kyrato, on 07/21/2008, -3/+2@caseycoold: Actually windows does not make drivers for hardware such as graphics cards, soundcards, processors.. well... nearly anything. Windows only certifies and e-signs them to not be viruses and hosts them on their servers so that you can access them easier. Check it next time you download a driver from Windows Update.
@TheStrongForce: Do you work as an IT hardware specialist? Nearly any driver support site will tell you to roll back the driver and reinstall to fix hardware issues. - belumaves, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1I have never roller back a driver.
your troubles are simple to explain, the diversity of the windows ecosystem vs. the mac one are worlds apart. when apple certifies drivers they can be sure that they work with almost every combination of hardware you have, because there are a relatively small set of options. when microsoft certifies drivers all they are saying is that they looked over them and they do not contain malicious code. in the mac world you are watched over by apple who guards their reputation jealously, and in the windows world you are ar the mercy of the hardware manufacturer to get it right.
- Patented, on 07/21/2008, -15/+9Yeah my Macbook was about $200 cheaper than a comparable Dell and especially HP laptop. Within an hour of having it on my desk, I'd upgraded my ram from 1 to 4GB with little more than a penny and a jeweler's screwdriver... I didn't have to take the flipping keyboard off or anything.
I've had no problems "fixing" my mac, it works already. That's one of the reasons I ended up buying one. I'm not a "mac guy" or a "windows guy" or even a "linux guy"... I've only been a mac user for 3 months after fixing and working in windows and linux for 12 years... mostly out of having to help my family members navigate through the morass that is Vista (to a new user). I couldn't bring myself to buy a NEW computer and put a 6-year old OS (XP) on it...- Spire3660, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8Sounds like you are ./gasp a COMPUTER GUY, which is what we should all aspire to be. The right tool for the right job. The right workflow for the right person etc, so and on and so forth. Computing isnt jsut about which of X,Y,or Z system is faster/cheaper/easier to use. Its about the TOTAL WORKFLOW from beginning of what you are doing until the end.
All these operating systems have the tools to do 99% of the functions of the others. For the most part the hardware is identical, the only REAL difference being APPLE requires a more advanced BIOS (which can be emulated anyways). Its the ease of use, cost, and i cant state this part enough, THE TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP AS IT RELATES TO THE COST/BENEFIT RATIO thats inportant.
So odd to have to remind adults to not be FANS of software.
Running Linux does not make you an intellectual
Running OSX does not make you safer or a better computer user.
Running XP or VISTA does not automatically make you a sheep.

- serinity, on 07/21/2008, -11/+3Nice!
- BTom14, on 07/21/2008, -33/+1266With the price of gas you'd be an idiot to use linux.
- iJessicaRabbit, on 07/21/2008, -31/+2Agreed, Linux is more like the Tesla
- mstump, on 07/21/2008, -0/+16With the price of electricity... you get the idea.
- mightycbu, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1i think it's more like this:
http://www.ecofriend.org/entry/how-to-make-a-solar ... - Jeffler, on 07/21/2008, -1/+11So Tesla makes MONSTER TRUCKS?
- Gonzell, on 07/21/2008, -4/+97Ha. Pros for diverting from the mindless OS bashing.
- vikingkatja, on 07/21/2008, -21/+48Gas is free with Linux!
- codeblue315, on 07/21/2008, -2/+7Ahhh, if only....
- TVarmy, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7Yes, but you have to find the source yourself!
- sn0w, on 07/21/2008, -16/+3Monster trucks don't use any gasoline, they run on methanol
- zephyr42, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1nitrous oxide actually.
- phibit, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7You're both wrong. They run on hopes and dreams.
- MaverickAlex, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4@zephyr42
Nothing runs on nitrous oxide.
Its an oxidizer.
- infiniphunk, on 07/21/2008, -16/+5nah, even a monster truck running linux gets 80 miles/gallon.
- inyearstocome, on 07/21/2008, -12/+7Its a universal Monster Truck. It can run on ANYTHING ;-)
- xyqxyq, on 07/21/2008, -9/+7Bio-diesel?
- Windsurfer619, on 07/21/2008, -12/+7Luckily, gas is free for the Linux truck!
- barc0001, on 07/21/2008, -3/+25The Linux truck probably runs on biodiesel that's made in the owner's backyard off of waste grease for free.
- Naieve, on 07/21/2008, -6/+7Gas might be cheaper for the linux truck, but it isn't road legal. Hope you can find a backwoods path everywhere you want to go.
Tried to find my way to COD4 in a Linux truck and got lost so I junked the damn thing.
My ATI TV wonder in truck tv doesn't work in linux, i put it into my linux car, and off I went.- thecatcantalk, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Oh, I see what you did there.
- misilman, on 07/21/2008, -5/+0Woshhhhh!!!....
- zephyr42, on 07/21/2008, -5/+2Monster trucks run on pure nitrous oxide.... gasoline doesn't have that much power.
- MaverickAlex, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Nothing runs on nitrous oxide.
Its an oxidizer. - BTom14, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Plus, its a ***** joke smartypants

- dhughes, on 07/22/2008, -3/+2 It's powered by L.O.V.E
- unitedatheism, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Fact! But at least you're not going to feel like being a pancake in like 3 seconds or so...
- Natilator3, on 07/28/2008, -1/+0I'm laughing so hard i can't make any snide remarks!
- iJessicaRabbit, on 07/21/2008, -31/+2Agreed, Linux is more like the Tesla
- Picard102, on 07/21/2008, -67/+621So Linux is a POS monster truck, compensating for a small penis?
- diggingaround, on 07/21/2008, -14/+8no.. it's just robust as hell!
- recruz, on 07/21/2008, -3/+4i dunno- i see the monster trucks get destroyed on the commercials ...
- diggtochina, on 07/21/2008, -5/+5http://digg.com/comedy/MAC_VS_PC_One_More_Time
- Gonzell, on 07/21/2008, -11/+2My OS has a vagina.
- diggtochina, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3your a woman?
- BossKey, on 07/21/2008, -9/+9Terrible representation of Linux. The Linux truck is depicted as one of those jacked-up trucks you always see driven by a redneck who constantly cuts people off because at that height he can't see the cars right next to him, and because he's too distracted yakkin' into a cell phone he's holding in one hand. And keeping us dependent on foreign oil via its fuel consumption.
- quiggibub, on 07/21/2008, -0/+20Hardcore linux geeks don't have small penises. They just don't get to use them very often.
- Tayls, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4No, dumbass. Linux is a redneck.
- corneliusJones, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2you might be a linux user if...
- Kamujin, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3I'd rather drive a monster truck then a douche-mobile.
- unitedatheism, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Yes, it is.
Happy now?
- anchora, on 07/21/2008, -16/+4I choose the monster truck. Screw gas prices!
- HumanGlitch, on 07/21/2008, -1/+10physically impossible to screw a price
- coyote1284, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but you can "***** an A"!
- HumanGlitch, on 07/21/2008, -1/+10physically impossible to screw a price
- dannyapplesauce, on 07/21/2008, -15/+5It was only a matter of time
- scubachef11, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I guess people who are digging you down are only casual digg users and missed the previous story.
- dannyapplesauce, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I spend way too much time on digg. I'm glad at least you understood, so it wasn't entirely lost
- scubachef11, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I guess people who are digging you down are only casual digg users and missed the previous story.
- geneticlone, on 07/21/2008, -24/+217So linux is a fat penguin with a gas guzzling monster truck, and your point...
- Myztry, on 07/21/2008, -28/+3You can't guzzle gas. It's not a liquid like petrol :)
You yanks and your funny names for things :)
I'm trying to get my car on gas because petrol prices are going up in Australia.- triont, on 07/21/2008, -1/+17TROLL DETECTED.
- scy1192, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9gas is short for gasoline

*see above comments - Myztry, on 07/21/2008, -1/+11. I wasn't trolling. I was fishing for flathead :)
2. Gas is long for... gas
3. Thank. but no thanks.
4. I'd suck a vagina. You can have the douche.
5. Sensitive lot. LOL - DforSpiD, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Myztry, gasoline and petroleum spirit, are the same thing... they are shortened to gas and petrol.
In Australia we use gas as the term for LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) so gas doesn't work as a term for petrol.
Then again Americans do tend to have odd words, or just spell things weirdly...
Seriously... "mom" is not a word... - Myztry, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I know what they're shortened from.
I just think it's stupid to overlay incompatible words on top of each other.
Gas is a distinct term to describe a liquid in it's vapour state. (and by extension - even when artifically liquified)
The yanks will always have quirks like base 12 (foot, inch) measures, low resolution off colour broadcasts (NTSC), incorrect spelling ('American' English), nervous system electrical frequencies (60hz),etc.
But it doesn't mean I can't point my finger and laugh at them :)
- mk3k, on 07/21/2008, -6/+2He can go 5 miles on a tan
- Myztry, on 07/21/2008, -28/+3You can't guzzle gas. It's not a liquid like petrol :)
