Informing people DOES matter. Whether or not they "end up" with Vista is for them to decide. At least they'll be informed of other choices available to them, like:
Ubuntu Linux which ships for free:

Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE):

Stay positive, the glass is half full. :) Sure, we need someone strong to shake up the OEMs, someone like Google could start rolling out PCs with Ubuntu on them. (and before you troll me with "more Google speculation" I said someone like Google) - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Every Windows PC can be immediately convrted to GNU/Linux. Apple does not have this advantage. The OEM's are where the battle is...
Finding the Linux Desktop

Jury Hears Microsoft Competition Suit
,----[ Quote ]
| A judge on Friday told jurors they must accept as fact that a
| federal court found in 1999 that Microsoft holds a monopoly over
| computer operating systems and that it restricted computer
| manufacturers' ability to use competing systems.
|
| [...]
|
| She said she'll show that the company used its monopoly power
| to exclude competition and control prices and that it conspired with
| other companies to restrain trade, maintaining what she called a
| chokehold on software competitors and computer manufacturers.
|
| "It isn't illegal to be successful," Conlin said in opening
| remarks. "We applaud that. ... But you can't freeze out competitors
| and punish and retaliate against people who cooperate with
| competitors. Microsoft did all that and more."
|
| Conlin warned jurors that she would say some unflattering things
| about Microsoft and its billionaire founder Bill Gates, who
| serves as company chairman.
|
| [...]
|
| Conlin's first 3 1/2 hours of opening arguments delved deeply into
| computer industry history and how Microsoft fought off competitors
| attempting to design rival software.

Even if your message gets through to someone, that Vista may restrict what you're allowed to do with your computer, they'll get it with their next computer. XP won't be an option, you'll get a choice between Vista Home Basic and Vista Basic Home Plus and Vista Ultimate Everything Things N Stuff.
The quality of the software has /nothing to do/ with how prevalent it will become.
A further thought; Apple has the Apple Store, where you get OS X with every purchase. Microsoft has all the other PC Stores.
We need some sort of Ubuntu Store. (yes, yes, I know, I know, but it's a good flagship)
