- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -14/+53Way to promote Linux to the masses, strip the GUI!
- Lhandroval, on 10/08/2008, -10/+36And this is supposed to be a better distro... how exactly? Perhaps if this was 1986 I'd be impressed by this.
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -2/+26RTFA. This distro just tries to show you whats possible without X. You can infact have a completely usable system without a gui and a distro like this sets it up for you.
From the article:
"INX is an interesting Linux distro released today, which is based on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and it is console only, without any graphical “X” programs. According to the release note INX is intended as a ‘tutorial’ and “introduction to the Bash command line”. It is important to note that INX is not the only console-only Linux distro. However their intention seems to be clear, as they are looking to build a console only “liveCD” distro which is “fun, and not intimidating for console beginners.”
So bash it if you like. (pun intended) I'm sure your not causing the developers any lack of sleep. - stealthc, on 10/08/2008, -1/+23XFCE
Enlightenment
Fluxbox
Those are the ones I know about. Personally, I'm a fan of Fluxbox. - Sillywombat, on 10/08/2008, -11/+33whats the point?
- buddyw, on 10/08/2008, -3/+24apt > yum
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -0/+20I am not impressed.
- LastDitchHero, on 10/08/2008, -7/+26Glad to see people can make whatever they want and have the freedom to do so with Linux. But sometimes I just shake my head and wonder why some of these get made.
- frontporsche, on 10/08/2008, -1/+20Not everyone's life goal is to "promote Linux to the masses".
- nesagwa, on 10/08/2008, -13/+29Yay, useless!
- DefaultGen, on 10/08/2008, -1/+15Just Crysis MUD.
- TheZorch, on 10/08/2008, -1/+15What a LOT of people fail to realize is that Linux is way more than just its GUI. You've all been spoiled by Windows for too long. The true power behind Linux is locked within the command prompt, and there are thousands of text-based programs with just as much power as Word and Excel. People bitching about the terminal or ever having to use it are showing how much they've become dependent on Windows, or I should be more accurate in saying how dumbed down they've become by using Windows.. Harsh words but the truth is often hard to swallow.
I've a staunch Linux advocate, I know the awesome power of this operating system. I know how much incredible potential it has if only more people would ween themselves off Windows and finally embrace the freedom that it can give them. - GiggleStick, on 10/08/2008, -0/+14You could create a really cool distro with just an led and a toggle key. It could use morse code for output and input.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/08/2008, -0/+13Sorry mate, you're right I replied too quickly. XFCE is what I use of course.
- buddyw, on 10/08/2008, -0/+12They should call it 'Linu'
- smoger, on 10/08/2008, -5/+17linux guys get a hard on because it's hard to use.
the harder it is, the better.
the distro, that is. - hamobu, on 10/08/2008, -0/+12I wonder if you could use this Distro to make a laptop that costs under $10
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -1/+11or, I could apply a password to a normal distro.
- ctnp, on 10/08/2008, -0/+10Haha, brings me back to the old days when you had to download and compile X separately anyway, which took most of an full night to do on a 386 (not counting the download time via 14.4k modem). Good times.
- stealthc, on 10/08/2008, -2/+11pizza = yum

thats why. - thtroyer, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7I'm running Openbox right now. It takes a little configuration to get usable (I recommend running it with pypanel). I migrated to this from Fluxbox.
@ IHaveIssues:
That's not a graphical interface... - syntheticfth, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7leet CSI hackers actually do use a gui.
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7976/csivbguigh ... - sertse, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7Hi I'm Sertse, one of the testers/contributors to INX, and just decided to drop by to respond to a few comments made here. These are only my own opinions and do not represent those of the key developers and/or the INX Team. etc etc. The usual disclaimer. =)
The primary reason for INX is to provide a fun, non intimidating way for -non expert- Linux users to learn about using the command line. One of our key and unique features (from being "just" a Ubuntu minimal/server) are a series of interactive tutorials with "try-it-yourself" guided exercises that (we hope!) would teach them what the commands do and how to use it.
A secondary reason is to showcase to the same above users of what actually is possible in a console only system. As many of you knowledgeable users know, is quite a lot. Internet & IRC? Check. Multimedia playing? Check. and so on. A plain CLI install still requires you to know what program to get to do what you want. This also explains our extensive use of menus (see our screenshots at http://inx.maincontent.net/album/1.png.html) throughout; the type of user this is catered for mightn't know such programs exist - this gives us a chance explain to them what they are. It also helps ease the transition from those used to X... a bare prompt would be quite intimidating to the unseasoned user.
In light of these 2 points, it feel justified to use Ubuntu as a base. Many of our developers use Ubuntu, so it's familiar to them. Ubuntu has a large repository so there's a better chance for us to find program "foo" to do "bar" without needing to compile it ourselves. After all, our aim is to teach and showcase the console, not exactly be the next distro for everybody, so why not use something with an established base?
Anyway, I'm glad to see this is creating so much interest. To those that enjoyed it and found it helpful, thank you. To the others, at least you may now understand our motivations. =) - directrix13, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7Yeah, and apt-get remove gnome will only remove the gnome meta-package which would pretty much change nothing.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/08/2008, -1/+7Why does a headless Linux disto cause so much rage?
- maninalift, on 10/08/2008, -0/+6as pointed-out above that would only remove the meta-package (empty package depending on various desktop packages) and so would have no impact on it's own.
- deenoop, on 10/08/2008, -0/+6windowmaker. nuf said.
how do you digg something in this TUI? ;p - fearsofgun, on 10/08/2008, -0/+6That's a good way to keep roommates from getting on your computer
- maninalift, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6thanks for that astounding insight
- 3leggedHorse, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6No wobbly windows. Boo
- Ki77erB, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6And Windows guys get a a hard on talking about Linux guys having hard ons.
- ghaefb, on 10/08/2008, -3/+8I think, I think... this won't work on Ubuntu. :)
- habbofresh, on 10/08/2008, -2/+7you know, awk is a bit overkill especially if you're just using it to "print $1"
try the cut command. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4Exactly, this is supposed to be some geeky fun. I don't get all the hate in these comments. No one will be forced to us it, and I doubt most people will ever even hear about it.
- jonshipman, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4System 7, please.
- aywwts4, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4When you first show a linux newbie 'sudo apt-get update' / upgrade and they feel like they are hacking the matrix with how packages are flying by.
- Nat3r, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4one laptop per ant
- blueZhift, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4As a liveCD to teach people to use the console, I think this is a great idea! While no one expects mom and pop to use this, I think it can be a great tool to educate the next generation of little hackers and may serve as a handy tool for us older ones. One of the things I love about open source software and Linux in particular is the diversity of tools and variations for any and every purpose. This is great stuff if you're ambitious and hungry to learn more!
- preperat, on 10/08/2008, -1/+5err .. or u could just install debian without a GUI !!!
- mgbuddy, on 10/08/2008, -1/+5It's not a piece of crap. You didn't even check the site.
If you take a look at the screenshots they've made an amazing work on a text mode menu system, and scripts and utils to be able to use the system WHITHOUT USING THE COMMANDLINE!
It's a TUI, a Text User Interface. not a GUI which is very different to let you alone on the prompt after login.
In fact, it seems to me that a lot of "Grandmas" can be more used to this menu driven way of working that the full GUI/Windows paradigm. You only have to READ, that's it.
looks like the old (Still going on?) menu system for AS400, or the different menu system managers of SCO Unix or HPUX.
SCO one was nice, they used TCL in text mode, with windows and nice widgets like radio buttons, combos, etc... . The same app could work in X without changing any line of code using Tk. - basotl, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4If it's using the same package management and repositories as Ubuntu 8.04 then it isn't a new distro. It sounds essentially like Ubuntu Server Edition with a few additions and the goal of making a live cd boot of it. Canonical has encouraged the use of the term "Remix" for respun versions of Ubuntu. There are too many home developers trying to pass of Remixes off as new distro's or Editions when the term doesn't necessarily apply.
- surian, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4The point is that some people will find it fun. To me, it seems like something that might be a fun toy. It might be something I'd be willing to install on a virtual machine and tinker with to see what it's all about. I'm very at home in a terminal only environment and I *do* find it enjoyable. That's not to say that I *don't* like to have a window manager (and compiz is amazing); however, there is a certain "je ne sais quoi" about a terminal that I (and others) find enjoyable.
This distro seems like a neat toy and nothing more.
But, that's the point. -
