Almost every Linux is a derivative of another Linux. Ubuntu is a derivative of Debian. It is the ongoing evolution of free software.
Here is a mind-map of all major distro's and how they are related: http://ia301118.us.archive.org/3/items/Mind_map_of_Linux_distributions_version_2/GNULinuxupdatedw4.png
But this is a terrible list. Basic descriptions, ripped from Distrowatch or the product page, and no real information. As an example, Linux Mint:
"Linux Mint
Linux Mint’s purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop based on Ubuntu."
If I were looking at this list as... you know... helpful information, how does that inform me that Linux Mint is Ubuntu+Binary Drivers+Codecs? - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8How can they missed

LOL - prototypeangel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Technically all of these are derivatives of debian. Anyways, nice list.

Of course, if you are that inexperienced to know how to do that......you probably don't need to be logged in as root...but go ahead...now you know - hunter186, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Running as root is not generally a good idea. One of the fundamental reasons Linux-based operating systems are more secure than Windows is because certain tasks require root authority, and certain files and folders can only be edited by certain users. Running as root allows malicious users/programs full control over your system.
That being said, if you are aware of the consequences, there are ways to avoid using sudo, (or at least to avoid being prompted for a password). Check the forums and make the decision yourself. That freedom is the best part of FOSS software. - carcass350, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ichthux:Linux for Christians
...I don't even have the words to describe how funny I find this - SanjayM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ever try "sudo bash" (Or possibly "sudo dash" in edgy)? Works a treat.
- towner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In two years of Ubuntu use I have never encountered any problem that I couldn't fix using sudo.
Sure it was weird for the first couple of weeks, not having a root account, but I did get used to it. Give it a go for a while, you'll see!

- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those who buried his comment, he was largely correct. The practical differences between these "distros" are not all that significant, at least from user stand point. A large number of distros seem to want include the all the codecs by default and call themselves a distro - just adding something that's easily downloaded from the repositories and changing some of the art does not an OS make. ImpiLinux, a South African distro based on Ubuntu..uh, Ubuntu itself is South African :p I can see the Chinese version though, those folks probably really do need better support for Mandarin and Cantonese. However two "Christian" "distros" is completely stupid. Hey, Jesusboy, just download Bibletime or whatever from the repositories and no, standard Ubuntu doesn't not include anything to offend you in the first place. Fluxbuntu? Hey, n00b, just get Fluxbox from Synaptic and pick it as your default in GDM :p Of course, if you can't do that, you probably lack the ability to use Fluxbox in the first place.
I like Scibuntu's comment though. Keep in mind they don't really even call themselves a distro, but instead is a script that adds scientific apps and such. But they said "There are plenty of good distros out there so there isn't need for another one. More distros confuse the users and divide the community's resources." Exactly. Somebody mentioned this is evolution of linux. It is not. All they're doing is dividing community resources, at best. Does anybody think these "distros" will add users to the the linux community. I seriously doubt it. Fed up Windows users looking for a change will find the major distros first.
Here's the scenario. Would be linux user:" I'm sick of Redmond's crap! I heard of this linux stuff. Maybe I should try it. " So he googles "linux" and gets the following result: http://www.google.com/search?q=linux&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 What does he find? Redhat, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo... I doubt he'll get Redhat (expensive) nor Debian (a bit above his head), but will pick Ubuntu or Fedora something like that. He won't find X-Evian or some nonsense like that.
So let's stop with these "distros" based on distros based on distros. Yes, that is the situation that we're in. - Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Schestowitz
Hence the reason why linux is insanely customizable. Don't like metacity? Swap it for beryl or whatever you want. Hell you don't even have to be using metacity at all, you could be on Kubuntu with Kwm or Xubuntu with Xfwm.
Different defaults != customization
You could most likely take any of those derivatives and make them exactly like a default ubuntu install, and vice versa. Which brings up the question "Well if i can get what i want from vanilla ubuntu, why do the others exist?" - WhackingDay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Serious question for Ubuntu supporters.
How do you deal with a linux system that has no root or administrator account? I know Ubuntu uses sudo, but I hit a snag with one installation that I could have fixed by simply editing one file, but it required the root user and I hadn't set up any regular user accounts yet, thus, I had no way to access the file.
Considering the amount of development work going into Ubuntu, I'd love to use it, but for my needs, it's far easier to do things as root instead of screwing around with user accounts and sudo. - blampen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here are a list of mirrors for elivecd.org they will not let you download directly without donating.

www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com -- Is this really a website? Wow... - rgsjrsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed, Ubuntu is a great OS and worth consideration as a replacement for Windows. I dual boot 2 machines only out of necessity, as it relates to work. I have 2 other machines running Ubuntu stand alone. There are other linux live/installed distributions are worth testing out.
http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php - WhackingDay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I'm not "running as root", i.e, I wouldn't be logged into the desktop as root. However, when I'm using a terminal or if I'm ssh'd into the box, it's usually a lot easier to do things as root.
I have a lot of experience using linux systems, but I really never used sudo very often. I'm not talking about enterprise level stuff, so the use of the root account wasn't a huge security risk.
Also, in the case I mentioned, it was during an install and I hadn't set any user accounts up yet, and I needed to modify the hosts file. Without any user accounts, sudo won't work. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This could have come in handy yesterday as I was installing Suse on an older computer I had laying around, because the normal ubuntu distro just sat at a black screen forever before the installation even started.

Add the above line to your "/etc/sudoers" file using the "visudo" command. You'll never be prompted for a password again.
Why are all you guys suggesting "sudo - su" or "passwd root" commands? - cantormath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The biggest misconception with most Linux users is that Linux changes between distributions. Its is all the same Linux, being that Linux is just the kernel, and only differs in the packages between each distro.
- vegasmacguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You should check out E-Live at http://www.elivecd.org/ then. Its a distro that makes full use of the Enlightenment Desktop. Download the live CD. It's still in its infancy in my opinion but definitely worth a look.
- garoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really wanted to see the list but that has to be worst web site ever. Ok nothing has the code on but the list is awful.
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indeed. I installed Edgy only to find even the sudo password the same as the user password.
So I tried installing FC 6, but installer kept barfing on nic. - penguincrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use regular ubuntu with beryl(a.k.a. compiz) for the "eyecandy" but I've never heard of the E17 that's is talked about in ebuntu. Also never hear of Enlightenment DR17. Anyone know what it is?
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3:) I can see all the Christians cussing their system now. It's hypocrisy in the making.
