Linux the Fastest Growing Smartphone OS
linuxdevices.com — A prominent technology research firm forecasts 75% compound annual growth rate for Linux in smartphones through 2012, making it the fastest-growing OS in the sector. By 2012, Linux is expected to power nearly a third of all smartphones, and have shipped in nearly a third of a billion phones.

- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Despire this, Symbian was reporting 7% growth in revenue or earnings yesterday. One has to wonder where Nokia is going with Maemo, its Symbian emulation, and the recent deals with Microsoft (Windows Live and MS-DRM).
This latest study is very encouraging. More than ABI's.- zydeco, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Symbian's earnings are up just from momentum. Nokia shipped 100,000,000 phones in the second quarter of 2007.
- 7of7, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5I can't wait to get Compiz Fusion installed on my cell phone. Imagine the possibilities. Flick left and the cube rotates to the phone. Flick left again and it's a music player.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3"Flick left and the cube rotates to the phone. Flick left again and it's a music player."
That would not require Compiz Fusion, nor would Compiz Fusion likely be the best way to go about getting such effects. - n1pz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Technicalities aside; that's cool idea!
- invictus2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Flick left and run out of battery :p
- NiX0n, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Flick right and it over-heats and blows up.
- sint4x, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I think samsung made something similar, you turn the phone around and its an mp3 player. It has the advantage of draining your battery twice as fast with two LCD displays.
Seriously who thought that was a good idea?

- betasp, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7Going from 1 install to 2 installs would make it seem you are growing even faster... but still not significant.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5You gotta let the Linux Fan Boys have their distorted view of the growth of their OS the same way that the iFanboys do.
- Smight, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2It would actually be 4 phones projected to be installed on 3 more phones in the next year.
I'm picturing the four guys that figured out how to install it and three of them think they can sneak upstairs and put it on their mom's phone some night. The fourth can't make it up the stairs in just a year. - natedouglas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I still think Apple has them beat. 0 -> 1 ERROR DIVISION BY ZERO
- bias, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Come on guys, at least let them have The Year of Linux... "Phones". They've been waiting for like 10 years.
- tripzero, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1You ought to stop making out with your iphone and look at the actual numbers.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Who would have thought that something that is free would be most popular? I guess I don't see the point of this article... Do you guys have stock in a free operating system?
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Yeah, and it's gone up 0%!
- thetayloreffect, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Now you can have a smug air of superiority about your cell phone too!
- vuke69, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5They are talking about Linux, not BSD, much to Theo's dismay.
- natedouglas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I have an OpenBSD smartphone, but it sucks. I can only make calls by piping Skype through an SSH tunnel, and whenever I answer it I get yelled at for not demanding a passport, optical scan, and DNA analysis beforehand.
- NiX0n, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Holy crap man!
- Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The last thing Theo needs is a cell phone. The guy yells and rants too much as it is.
(( No offense Theo; I love you man, but you really do cause a lot of trouble from time to time, and you can't just learn to let stuff go. ))

- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Numbers taken out of context. If party A sold 100,000 widgets last year, and sells 110,000 this year, that's only 10% growth. If party B sold 1 widget last year, and sells 2 this year, that's 100% growth. Does that in and of itself make party B more successful? Not by a long shot. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to se linux smoke the current mobile OSes because Windows Mobile is an Abomination, Symbian isn't a great deal better, and palm, arguably the best in terms of usability, just plain looks dated. But as it stands, this article isn't entirely accurate and probably qualifies as a bit sensational.
- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1tell me this isn't because they finally released that open-source phone promised for the last 4 years.
- skyscape, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2no, it's because for every 24 hours, there is a goal to submit at least 10 linux articles
- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Hmm... I think the rawstory.com push is still ahead in that regard.

Just look at Apple. - BitBucket, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Just let me know when a Linux-based phone can sync reliably with Outlook and I'll buy one. My company only allows us to sync phones that are compatible with MS Activestink.
- skyscape, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0awesome. thats cause m$ has everything figured out long before these os companies began figuring out who they were.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Well I had no Idea that Linux was the fastest growing Smartphone OS.

Not one clue. - SpacemanSpiff01, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Isn't OS X the fastest growing Smartphone OS? I mean its gone from 0 phones to millions in a couple of months.
- wampl3r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I wouldn't call the iPhone a Smartphone... (yet)
- skyscape, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1the problem with these articles, is that the are always growing.
For five years the freaking linux os has been growing, and growing, and growing, like the energizer, but never lives up to the outgrowing business. - asadajk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1no uniformality of Linux os to became popular.different linux versions for mobiles, motorola uses one, nokia another.although few efforts exists for uniform Linux embedded os.pray -M$ mobile os to be not another monopoly on mobile platform.
- kmetral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0there is no doubt Linux isn't going to be the OS for future phones. Look at the phenomenon the iphone created
