- simplyphp, on 10/15/2008, -1/+22Who said penguins can't fly?
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+17More and more people are jumping on board everyday; it's getting hard to imagine a future that doesn't involve an open source operating system taking the lead.
- eerpini, on 10/14/2008, -1/+10Ya it will be tough to imagine a future with a Propreitary OS , .... Open source is the future !!
- armaswk, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7Virgin America's entertainment system is running Linux too for at least a year or so.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4LMFAO off!!!
- the0ckid82, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4what the hell are you talking about ... you dont think they are IT jobs created by this ? my best friend actually just moved to OZ to work for quantas on these exact projects and he has been working for Panasonic in their inflight entertainment division for quite some time and there are tons of jobs at company ....
- werries, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4Um. Then why are you in the linux section?

why not?
it's been done. - aussiecarlos, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Qantas is the ONLY airline in the world to not crash. They have the safest flying record of any airline.
The media throws all these "incidents" they have out of proportion. Do yourself a favour and have a talk to an experienced pilot, it will put your mind at ease. - armakaryk, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3the critic circa 1994.

- samanathon, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3"According to an article in Avionics Today, the A380 is the industry’s first one-gigabit backbone system, and will deliver something in the order of 5Mbps of data to the seat."
Wow. If I could use this system on my next flight, I wouldn't complain about the lack of lunch or legroom! - fuzzymuzzy, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Then filter them out
- jiminoc, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2you pulled a milano!
- GTPilot, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2I needed therapy after leaving PAC.
- fuzzlog, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2No worries, the A380 is so huge, it encloses its own internet network. You won't probably run out of addresses to explore before you're done flying across the Pacific.
- flibblesan, on 10/15/2008, -1/+3Linux will be the only thing that works on a Qantas plane, and will be the only thing not to crash.
- LeviTheSmith, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Oh my god god!
- Stonekeeper, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2There were Ubuntu Kiosks at Sydney airport last time i was there. Not OT, just remembering the last time I boarded a Quantas flight.
- seldon21, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Here is a link to the Panasonic http://www.panasonic.aero/pdf/X_Series_Brochure_Fi ...
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Statistics is bound to catch up; these latest incidents have been relatively minor.
- mbelleghem, on 10/15/2008, -2/+3Hnmm..... I'm assuming based on their recent record that up to now Qantas' whole fleet has been running on Packard Bells running Windows for Workgroups 3.11?
- nmanguy, on 10/15/2008, -2/+3I hope people don't mind compiling their own media players...
Now that the obvious joke is over with, it will be cool to boot up to a Linux system mid flight. - alphablog, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Im tired of it too
- LeviTheSmith, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1qantas*
Hi - slick_rick, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Are you in the Lake Forest office?
- aussiecarlos, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure those are still there. I was in Sydney Airport in June and remembered seeing them. I think Melbourne also has them.
Oh and it's Qantas without the u. - beaudh, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1I was happy as hell when I got my panasonic 42" Plasma, I was even more excited when I found out it had Linux inside. Go Penguisonic!
- the0ckid82, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1haha my best friend used to work at the lake forest office but he just transfered to Australia
- seshomarusamma, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure Swiss Air from Shanghai to Zurich had a Linux based entertainment system
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -1/+1Nope.
It hasn't lost a JET airliner. It had some crashes, just like every other airliner, when it still used only prop-driven stuff. - jiminoc, on 10/15/2008, -2/+2SteveBor has commited a terms of service breach by posting confidential Panasonic information on a public site. Margis will be notified ASAP!
- gmanp, on 10/16/2008, -0/+0It isn't that new to use Linux as the platform under the in-flight entertainment system. I flew on Singapore Airlines last year and after my screen locked up, guess which familiar looking boot-up sequence I saw scroll up my seat's screen. That's right kids, it was Linux.
- alphablog, on 10/15/2008, -4/+3I am tired of these ***** Linux articles
- TKidd, on 10/15/2008, -4/+3Your mom took a seat on my new superjumbo.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -3/+1qants love penguin
- ronaldmonster, on 10/15/2008, -3/+1Well less IT positions means less jobs, which means tons of people will be out of work and lots of degrees will be useless. That's not a good thing at all and I hate how Mac & Linux fans see it as a good thing. I mean how are lost jobs a good thing? Yes I love Linux and Windows but anything that will take jobs away from someone I can't embrace it.
- gamepr0, on 10/15/2008, -4/+1major reason i don't use it together with the cartoonish feel to it and the lack of good software for it.
- zerodaysoon, on 10/15/2008, -7/+3OMG god!! i just updated to the new kernel and hibernation f88king works now!! i am so happy!! damn toshiba made it near impossible to do anything on my laptop wiht linux, but the new kernel update is my laptop work faster, less crashes, and more stable!! YESSS
sorry for hijack, im just so happy!! - thcobbs, on 10/15/2008, -5/+1lol... anyone wanna lay odds that its Xandros?
- PharmaPhool, on 10/15/2008, -6/+1Regardless of what OS they are running, the question is really what content will be made available?
Web Browsing? Not likely in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
Email? Maybe.
Texting? Maybe.
Cell Phone? Maybe.
All those "Maybes" depend more on the cost/bandwidth of a satellite uplink. Keep in mind these are long haul jets over the vast Pacific ocean, not a lot of cellular coverage.
So its really just a host for serving up Movies and Games, right? Which they do now.
Of course, anything to break up the 13 hour flight from LA to Sydney is worthwhile.... - bcronos, on 10/15/2008, -8/+1If Linux would evolve past the need for the command line stuff everyone would use it...
- coldmolasses, on 10/15/2008, -10/+1Damn I hate the massive amount of diggs about Linux everyday...

What is Digg?
