- XxbladesfirexX, on 02/26/2008, -1/+65Three cheers! Hopefully this will lead to us being able to load homebrew from the built in SD card reader.
- Protoss, on 02/26/2008, -0/+27I hope so. All they need is the driver for the SD slot, and being inside an OS and having the ability to debug in real-time should accelerate this.

(groan)
- p0tent1al, on 02/26/2008, -3/+4um it would, if the Nintendo Wi''s processor could handle High Definition content......
As it stands, Playstation 3 would be the best for XBMC. Why? Because PS3 can already run Linux, and PS3 allows you to put your own Hard drives in it (unlike the Xbox 360, where you have to buy expensive proprietary hard drive). Also Playstation 2 emulation is not tooo far off. Also PS3 is much more of a media center than Xbox 360 or the Wii, with integrated wireless, and a built in Blu-Ray Player, and built in HDMI.
And this comes from an Xbox 360 owner, so don't get it confused either. - buu700, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1It'd be nice to see Mythfrontend on the Wii. It would only play SD vids (maybe even 480p), but that's fine because the Wii's video card can't go any higher than that anyways.

- dualscreenman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+11Since you're such a hacking prodigy that we should take your word as gospel, why don't you take the honor of coding the first ISO loader for the Wii?
- bejayel, on 02/26/2008, -3/+2Well unlike the states, under fair use in Canada i am actually allowed to back my games up.
Also, just where do you suppose you are going to store a full blown linux distrobution? on the half a meg of storage on the wii? Yeah thats going to work well. ***** retards.- Remmy, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2It's called an SD Gecko you "***** retard". Please take your stupidity somewhere else and stop complaining because you are inept and simple comprehension.
- digitallysick, on 02/26/2008, -5/+3So, how can they make it work without the zelda game? Need some type of special ISO that will run
- dualscreenman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+25As of now they can't, since the only (released) hack to run homebrew requires a particular exploit found in Zelda.
They won't be able to make their own disc since it'd have to be signed by Nintendo. The signing key is guarded by Nintendo's ninja security team.- Akaji, on 02/26/2008, -0/+40Nintendo employs ninjas, pirates, AND robots in their security team. It's _literally_ impossible to get past.
- carpespasm, on 02/26/2008, -0/+26not if you're good at pitting those three groups against one another.
- dualscreenman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9Nah, Nintendo fired the pirates. They were buying too many R4s.
- EtherGnat, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7Arrrrrrrrrrrrr4s?
- Akaji, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2Speaking of which, I just got an R4, and I absolutely lov- oh crap, there's a pirate and a robot on my lawn, coming at my window. At least there's no ninj-*HURK*

- theOster, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4it's not impossible, i used to bullseye... eh nevermind...
- chrisaug18, on 02/26/2008, -3/+4.
- iofthestorm, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I'm not positive on this, but it seems like a similar exploit might work for other games too. I'm sure a large number of Wii owners have Twilight Princess anyhow.
- EgoManiac, on 02/26/2008, -1/+0I bet Mario Could!!!!
- Akaji, on 02/26/2008, -0/+40Nintendo employs ninjas, pirates, AND robots in their security team. It's _literally_ impossible to get past.
- Protoss, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5No way around it as of yet, but now that they theoretically can go in and fiddle with the system, it will be much easier to find other vulnerabilities.
- digitallysick, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Maybe soon it could be ran from the memory card , as a "channel" , that would be nice
- trunkster, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Plus you have to use the SD card adapter in the gamecube memory slot for now. Not the built in SD card memory slot.
- parkermauney, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Is everyone oblivious to the fact that they're just going to release an update?
- sukimashita, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I might just add that the guys who released the Zelda hack have already shown that they are able to encrypt full discs to be played back on the Wii directly. So it's neither "impossible" nor "safe" with any ninja team anylonger. However, as it seems to be one of the "unpachable" methods and is very error prone in this early stages of development, they won't release it.
- dualscreenman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+25As of now they can't, since the only (released) hack to run homebrew requires a particular exploit found in Zelda.
- NinjaPig, on 02/26/2008, -9/+3its a good thing i didn't buy a disc chip or open my wii
this is great news- dualscreenman, on 02/26/2008, -3/+12The makers of the hack have no intent to write an ISO loader. If you want to pirate that badly, just get a chip.
- Spamcan, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I think it'll happen eventually, and probably within the next several months. Not saying that's a good thing, but now that the save exploit has been found it's only a matter of time before someone with unscrupulous goals and the knowledge to do so puts an ISO loader out there for everyone to download. I'm a little surprised Nintendo hasn't patched all new copies of the game yet, or maybe they have and I missed it.

- Darth_tater, on 02/26/2008, -2/+16Linux on the will has TREMENDOUS potential. Personally, i cant wait for something like XBMC for the wii.
the integrated bluetooth + wifi + dvd rom and PPC chip w/ 256 ram = cool hardware for cheap, something every home brew dev craves.- GinaJuice, on 02/26/2008, -1/+10You're right. Except for the RAM part. The Wii only has 88MB of RAM, not including 3MB for the GPU :( . Still, the XBOX only had 64MB, so who knows what they'll do with an extra 24MB and extra hardware capabilities.
- Darth_tater, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3My bad! i must have had the 256 floating around in my head form something else.
GinaJuice is right about the ram spec, but that shouldn't matter! the XBMC team can get their software working with only 64 mb of ram.
either way, linux on the Wii promises to reveal many more vulnerabilities that will hopefully lead to constructive projects instead of ISO loaders and the like. - iofthestorm, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Yeah, also the Wii's RAM is a lot faster than standard DDR or whatever the original Xbox had (might have even been PC133, too lazy to look up specs).

What a failure, it can't do something the PS2 could.
Only Wii DVD games. - mbm1980, on 02/26/2008, -2/+7You're so stupid it's amazing you're able to breath.
- SurrealDream, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4I'm not gonna join in on "the idiot side", but I read a statement from Nintendo saying that, were they to introduce DVD playback, they'd need to release a new Wii, since enabling DVD playback on the current Wii would require a hardware update, not just a firmware change.
- jamesdew, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5I believe nintendo claim a hardware change is required to play DVDs but is it really? If it can read a data DVD i dont see why some clever software couldn't make it play a video DVD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_optical_disc ... - StormTroopr, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4It can with homebrew that ran on the gamecube. The Wii can play pretty much all gamecube homebrew.
The only reason the Wii doesn't by default is licensing fees.

- Protoss, on 02/26/2008, -0/+20If the Wii gets as active a homebrew community as the PSP or Xbox scene got, then the Wii will become a very inexpensive media computer...that is also capable of playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
- p0tent1al, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6Linux is a powerful and free OS. Taking a great console with great restrictions, and installing Linux on it, is a way of keeping that console great, but breaking a lot of those restrictions. - iofthestorm, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6Wait, Wii firmware update? I'm going to have to go check this out right now.
Ahh, google is friendly. http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/02/25/wii-me ...
Someone in that thread says the Twilight Hack still works after the update, so it's probably OK. I think the bug is in the Zelda code anyway, because certain versions of the DVD don't have it.- CalcProgrammer1, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Yeah, I tested the hack immediately after updating to 3.2 (I was the first one on Nintendo Wii Fanboy to point this out), the hack WORKS FINE on 3.2, so go ahead and update, you won't harm your console in doing so. The exploit is in the DISC, so unless Nintendo comes to your house and forces your LoZ:TP disc from your hands and gives you one without the error code on it, you're probably going to keep the hack. There has been some talk about a possible IPO mod (IPO chip runs a background OS while games run, I guess providing Home menu functionality or something, but we're not sure whether or not this is even editable, so maybe Nintendo can't even change the firmware on it). People seem pretty sure that the hack is safe, as it exploits an error permanently locked in your disc.
- HyperHacker, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1They can still patch the disc at load-time.
- JustAboutReal, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1they're gonna save a load-time patch on every wii in the world in the 1/2 meg of storage... just to suppress the linux community?

- ShiftyMcCan, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Not very. All you need is a SD card and Twilight Princess. Load the Linux game save from the SD card to the Wii, run Twilight Princess, load game save, talk to some guy (in game) and game crashes as Linux is loaded!
- HaloZero, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2I use a small media center computer for my videos and stuff. Rather not open up and hack my wii >

- contradictator, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2There's also the option of just buying an EeePc altogether, they're lovely machines and not expensive at all.
- cheezintern, on 02/26/2008, -5/+3This is fantastic as my modded original xbox doesn't support high def...
- Sniper, on 02/26/2008, -0/+15Neither does the Wii
- Abatrour, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3The original xbox DID support 720p for XBMC.
Scarface had support for it as well.
The Wii doesn't support 720p for games... for now.. (Like the original xbox) but that could just be a software limitation and possibly unlocked with linux now being released.- Jaruzel, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The problem with XBMC on the the original XBOX is that the P3-733Mhz cpu in the XBOX is not fast enough to playback hi-def video content (sometimes you could get 720p working but it was rare).
I'm pretty sure the Wii hasn't got the CPU grunt either.
(and no, Abatrour, I'm not stalking your comments ;) )

- Abatrour, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3The original xbox DID support 720p for XBMC.
- Sniper, on 02/26/2008, -0/+15Neither does the Wii
- DKAJC, on 02/26/2008, -2/+0This is good for the modders, but unless I have a lot of those where I live, it's kinda useless news. It's good to hear that it's a possibility, though.
- treyd1, on 02/26/2008, -7/+1My tonsils run on linux.
http://xkcd.com/124/ - grapesofbaath, on 02/26/2008, -8/+5I don't get the effort. It's not like the Wii would make that great of a media center. It's still underpowered and supports a low resolution output.
Just because you CAN figure out how to run linux on a toaster doesn't mean the bread is going to burn any better.- Tishiablo, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7The XBox ran linux beautifully, and seeing as the Wii has slightly better specs than the XBox, the Wii should make a more than adequate Linux media center.
- psquiddy, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Wii would make a great media center. Consider this (some of which has been mentioned, but I'll risk repeating): WiFi, Bluetooth, SD, USB (think keyboard and mouse if you don't want to use the Wiimote), TV output (480p at least), DVD, wireless remote. Beats the pants off of the original XBOX, and this is all before you even load Linux. WITH Linux, you can basically port over anything you want. UrbanTerror for Wii? Run all those old Nintendo games without the Virtual Console? Run all old arcade games through MAME? Maybe WINE (yeah, I know PowerPC, maybe not), or a Virtual PC? All your web-browsing needs, email, word processing, video conferencing (with a webcam). Remotely display your Wii anywhere in the world. Just because one individual doesn't think it's necessary or desirable doesn't mean no one would be interested.
- Jaruzel, on 02/26/2008, -1/+0Technically, you could have done all of this with the original XBOX (once modded), no-one did tho.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 03/08/2008, -0/+0XBOX had proprietary USB ports (controller ports) so you'd need an adapter to connect devices (keyboard/mouse/camera/SD card reader/etc). XBOX did NOT have wireless (neither does 360) or Bluetooth. It had a basic remote but the Wiimote is way more advanced. XBOX did not have any sort of external storage device, though it did have an internal hard drive. The Wii can use SD cards and USB storage devices though (USB HDD's, USB flash drives/card readers/etc). The Wii is also smaller than the old XBOX and you don't have to mod it to run Linux. You had to take apart XBOX'es and solder modchips into them to run Linux, the Wii you can just pop in a copy of Twilight Princess and go.

- 1timeuser, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3As stated, the Wii has better hardware then the xbox, and xbmc is brilliant!
- Namesbond, on 02/26/2008, -8/+2The Apple TV, Mac Mini, or an old X-box are better media center devices. I'm sorry but this does seem pretty pointless. As far as emulation we already can play old games with a modchip and gamecube homebrew. I see absolutely no reason to do this except if they figured out how to connect an external HD full of iso's to the Wii's usb port and play Wii games off it. I doubt they will ever get that far and I still don't know if that would be worth it.
- Abatrour, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3But what if you DON'T have an Apple Tv, Mac Mini, or modded Xbox?
I have an Xbox with XBMC on it and the Wii would have its advantages.. like WiFi, bluetooth, and the wiimote.- Namesbond, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Apple TV is less expensive and can display HD. Has wireless, HDMI, a remote, and a 40 gig hd.
- Abatrour, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3But what if you DON'T have an Apple Tv, Mac Mini, or modded Xbox?
- returnofthemac, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1I dont think this guy could possibly be ***** upon enough for his awful description. Please learn to speak english, sir.
- AppleMacMan, on 02/26/2008, -9/+2What's Linux?
- linuxownsyou, on 02/26/2008, -2/+0ah Wiki knows all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux if you would like to try it out, download any distro such as ubuntu. you can find it at http://www.ubuntu.com/
- darkgreystar, on 02/26/2008, -3/+0Damn, and I thought I was a geek for having the Opera browser for my DS.
*must have* - assasinine, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Does anyone know if the Wii is technically capable of outputting an HD signal (720p or 1080p) using the component cable? If so, given the right software interface, this thing would make a great video playback device.
- junaru, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3"Unofficial reports claim it(wii's cpu) is derived from the 485 MHz-Gekko architecture used in the Nintendo GameCube and runs 50% faster at 729 MHz."
Dont think it'll be able to play anything hd- Cryoniq, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2True.. but if you that isn't clocked 485 Mhz, that is streaming CPU speed. At least from what I understood the PowerPC arch is. Which mean that 485 Mhz really isn't something to turn down. ;P
- CalcProgrammer1, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1What does CPU speed have to do with outputting HD? Sure, you need more CPU to DECODE HD video files, but the point was if it can OUTPUT HD. Hopefully there's some way to force the Hollywood chip (Wii GPU) into outputting a 720p signal through the component cords. Maybe it would take an updated chip driver but it'd be nice if it could. Even without HD though, it'd look pretty good.
- junaru, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3"Unofficial reports claim it(wii's cpu) is derived from the 485 MHz-Gekko architecture used in the Nintendo GameCube and runs 50% faster at 729 MHz."
- ronshubby, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9Wii running natively on Linux.. Now that would be useful.
- MurphyWatson, on 02/26/2008, -3/+1So why is it that the people who write summaries underneathe the headline are always borderline retard when it comes to english?
- fashnek, on 03/23/2008, -0/+0I noticed right away that your English is incredible. Keep up the great work!
- uttertosser, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3so does this mean I can now have an external hard disk?
- 1timeuser, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Maybe... but it most certainly means that we will be able to use network shares via smb or whatever suits you best at some point in the future.
- Elbart, on 02/26/2008, -3/+1Will it blend?
- flashguy156, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0Maybe
- VirusUK, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1wow this is awesome news, finally a reason to buy a Wii, it would be awesome to use as a media centre with the wiimote. shame about the lack of HD support though.
- senatorpjt, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3This is pretty useless. The Wii is too underpowered to do anything useful, particularly in terms of RAM (88MB) and disk space (none). The Wiimote has already been made to work with Linux on a PC, and you can get a PC cheaper than a Wii which is more suitable for Linux.
- pedo, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5thats not the point.
- 1timeuser, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1A small distro with a media center would be awesome!
- jhofman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1When can I start!?!?!?
- djeror, on 02/26/2008, -3/+2Why am I not excited? Oh that right, because Apple TV is more powerful, cheaper, is designed to do function as a media center and outputs HD. But hey, if you have more fun paying more money for an underpowered media center that you have to hack, good for you! I own a Wii and I love it. But it's good at playing games...
- poisonborz, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Man... I always wanted to master the writing style of linux developers. No news on the site for two years, then they achieve to run linux on the wii, and all they do is one paragraph of cool, self-controlled, straight-to-the-point text. No unnecessary fanfare here.
- momsshizzle, on 02/26/2008, -7/+2Title should be Linsux infects Wii.
- daridave, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1DVD/Divx playback welcometh.
- prleet, on 02/26/2008, -5/+2Stop Stop Stop, hacking Wii is seriously lame, just look at its technical aspects, you honestly can't do much but on the other hand, the system that needs to get hacked is unhackable, damn the ps3
- pedo, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5"The Twilight Hack works by employing a lengthly character name for the horse in the game ('Epona') in order to facilitate a stack smash. This gets triggered when talking to the man next to you when you start the savegame as he loads the name to use it in his dialog or upon attempting to enter the next zone"
