- hangman16, on 08/21/2008, -2/+40The motherland loves linux it seems
- rchargel, on 08/21/2008, -0/+26I'm supprised Slackware is so popular in Brazil. I guess we always got to do it the hard way.
This brings up an interesting point about Cuba though. Are they even allowed to buy Windows or Mac (both being American countries and banned from trading with the Cubans)? - HCviolence, on 08/21/2008, -4/+28Way to go Utah.
- skyshock1, on 08/21/2008, -1/+17Slashdot "In Soviet Russia" jokes.
- tomarocco, on 08/21/2008, -0/+15Cuba is a Linux hotbed. Who would have known?
The good news for Microsoft is that Mongolia and Iraq are still both strongholds. - santasing, on 08/21/2008, -2/+16Before the "Year of Linux" jokes, just remember,
Your cheetos encrusted PC does not represent everything that Linux can be used for - cutchyacokov, on 08/21/2008, -0/+11Where isn't windows piracy big?
- Antart, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10I think it's because there are plenty of smart IT guys in that area. Hence the popularity of Gentoo and Debian in Belarus where I come from. :-) But ordinary people just use pirated Windows like loonyphoenix said.
- beesaretasty, on 08/21/2008, -2/+12A better title would be "Linux Curiosity Across the Globe"
- duckyinc, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11Russia is on top? Someone explain that to me
- orcishstra, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11Linux users don't pirate software! They use Open Source!
Windows users pirate software like photoshop etc... - barsanuphe, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10maybe, maybe not. China has its own RedFlag Linux. this study uses google to measure linux popularity, and that probably means that chinese numbers are incorrect.
- benologist, on 08/21/2008, -4/+13"To have a way to judge popularity, we have looked at where a specific search term is most popular"
Because that's the definitive guide to popularity..... - avisgoth, on 08/21/2008, -2/+11What idiot thought it was a great idea to use different shades of blue, that are very close to each other in the middle, in order to paint the map?
- hypershadow147, on 08/21/2008, -2/+10I would imagine Novell being in Utah would have at least some effect on its popularity there.
- ramzavala, on 08/21/2008, -1/+9Stop breaking my firewall you stupid mongolians!
- loonyphoenix, on 08/21/2008, -2/+9Maybe it's news to you, but in Russia pirated software is very popular. And everyone who can't afford a Windows licence, unless it's a corporation, downloads a pirated version or buy one for $3.
There must be another explanation. I'd like to believe it's cause we Eastern Europeans are more socially oriented people, less individualist; that's why open-source is easier to understand for us. After all (and I'm not a communist, and I like open-source), the communist and FOSS ideals are similar in many ways. - skyshock1, on 08/21/2008, -2/+9Fedora more popular in Africa than Ubuntu. Hehe, that makes me laugh.
- benzzene, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6@vincentweber: How pathetic of you to begin your ignorant tirade with a pointless insult. Mufaka actually seems to know what he/she is talking about, whereas you are merely making things up based on no knowledge whatsoever.
Plenty of information can be collected from server logs (yes that's right, even the Google server logs). The types of information available include ISP (which can tell you country or even city/suburb sometimes), browser, OS, OS or browser language, whether or not JavaScript is on, screen resolution, etc.
So stop shooting people down when you are the one who knows nothing. - bscene, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6agreed... this is nothing more than a measurement of curiosity
@vincentweber... why so harsh dude? no need to be calling people stupid. - bsolidgold, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6There are a lot of tech companies here. The company I work for is headquartered in Sunnyvale/Cupertino, California but it's cheaper to hire an engineer (software) here in Utah. We also have offices in Texas, Canada, Latvia and a few other places around the globe, but the main development happens here and in California.
- cptchaos, on 08/21/2008, -2/+8In russia, linux loves the motherland!
- Jetplanefu, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6That idiot would be Google... ;)
- javaroast, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Jessica Alba has viruses!?! eeewww
- bsolidgold, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Another good way to say 'No Comment' is to NOT COMMENT.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Kind of funny that Ubuntu is behind many others in Africa.
- HxChris91, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6If you read the whole article, he explains that Russia and other eastern countries will probably have a stronger leaning towards free software due to their lower incomes compared to the west.
- Noncentz, on 08/21/2008, -2/+7Just got done installing my first Cup of Ubuntu today......
- TodoInTX, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Don't forget about Novell/SuSE being based there too :-)
- vincentweber, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5No surprise: computing gets more mobile every day and flash memory prices have dropped significantly.
- vincentweber, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5This is by far _the_ most stupid comment I have yet seen on Digg.
Can we please not get any lower? Thank you. - MtheoryX, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5Don't blame Google for your inferior eyesight and color distinction.
/inb4 leave google alone - loonyphoenix, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Or maybe we're just smarter and think about such things :)
- Sawta, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5Fedora: "We're ***** HUGE in Sri Lanka!"
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -4/+8Because GNU/Linux licenses are for commies and socialists. Us good ol boys and freedom fighters prefer BSD licensed software
- aaaantoine, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5It's not usage at all. The graphs are based on Google searches.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -5/+9Linux FTW!
- mrBitch, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4+1 for " cheetos encrusted PC "
- vivsriaus, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4It looks like the love is more in the Fatherland
- beartamer, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3Massive penguins relocation =)
- JeffMaster, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3those mongolians have broken my sh-ity firewall!
- anemptygun, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3antart is right hacking is huge in russia.
- neko, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Or maybe they just don't want reliance on secret-source foreign software.
- Vadi0, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4Hey now! Gartner says it's 4%.
Lawl! - LeviTheSmith, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4*****
- cowboy77061, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4i believe the programmers over there are big on the "hacker" culture.
- lektroluv, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3Now we know where all the hackers are!
- Mufaka, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4Laugh. Someone here is stupid for sure.
Google is using their search term data. Why you can't translate "The Server" to "Their Servers" is beyond me. By your reasoning, I should be chastising you for supporting this when they are clearly not using search terms from every search engine out there. Lemme know if that is too much for you.
Yes, country. IP Geo is not a precise science, but very accurate to the country. Do you have any clue about any of this?
The question still stands. If I search for "Ubuntu sucks" does that mean it should count towards it's popularity? Usage = popularity in this context. - skyshock1, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5This must only be for desktop Linux usage. If they took into account the Linux usage in Datacenters I think you'd see quite a different picture.
- MtheoryX, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3"poll, when was the last time (if you have ever) paid for windows?"
