- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25It has been submitted to Digg at least twice in the past week. But, still, it never got the attention it deserves. The URL to cite should probably be: http://df38.dot5hosting.com/~remember/chris/
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23A little "Frankenstein's monster" looking but IT'S ALIVE!
- johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18So all that's left to do is code support for the display, buttons, sound, memory stick, battery, analog controller, wifi, umd drive...
- aloser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I sense a bit of sarcasm. But I really did. I stood in line, got mine on launch day, and immediately came home and googled "PSP Hacks." It's an amazing piece of hardware :)
- Stemp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12a portable Linux box with wifi ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9gotta love reply abuse of the same link 2 posts down and 7 hours earlier
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7finally PSP linux is going somewhere, I remember getting my PSP when they first came out and Thinking "i can wait for PSP Linux to get of the grounds" and a long....LONG time later, here we are
- answr42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6w00t ~ now i can play Kolf on my PSP!
- seamonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5step 1: kernel (done)
step 2: framebuffer driver + port of SDL. (done)
step 3: novel way of getting keystrokes into it
step 4: support for wifi hw
step 5: email, AIM, web browse, and VOIP with your PSP any time you are in a wifi network.
Thats just one possible use. You people have _no_ imagination. - gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If what you really want is a truly open handheld, pick up an XGP.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XGP
Check out the specs list: WiFi, SD card, USB port, TV-out, OpenGL ES, fully open SDK, runs Linux natively, etc... Lots of 8-bit emulators ported already, and an active homebrew community that doesn't have to fight to get something barely functional. It might not be quite as powerful as a PSP, but what power it has is completely open for you to use how you like. I kind of wish the big companies would take that route, or that there was enough interest from other folks to make an open portable both affordable, and popular, which would steer dollars toward it for making it also a high-powered device. - u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5if it happens, does it mean we can produce our own mini-keyboards for the psp, using the ones for palms, and etc?
- Hitchhiker90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Great, now that we got linux on the PSP what do we do with it?
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do you have to try particularly hard to be such an idiot?
It may not run much now - but look at rockbox as an example of the many ways that the functionality of Linux on portable devices can be extended.
So not entirely useless after all.
What would be useless would be if Linux wasn't running at all. That would be truly useless. However we have to start somewhere and actually getting Linux to run on the PSP - and then adding functionality later is certainly much better than than it not running at all. - Burn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So kind of like GT4 Portable....oh wai...
- webphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You could easily make a good keyboard that allows the use of the triggers, buttons and joystick.I have seen this implemented on the links browser for xbox, this is a great input method and one can get a reasonable speed out of it. alternativly you could use: http://pspupdates.qj.net/The-PSP-Keyboard-has-arrived-TyDoPad-v0-01-beta/pg/49/aid/79920
- rayishu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3at least its working i love it, i have Linux running on my ps3 and im hosting a LAMP server off it
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Rockbox itself is not Linux based - but it runs on top of several Linux versions for portable devices. Try iPod Linux for a start. (No doubt another possibly useless application in your eyes).
Are you sure you even actually use Linux?
As for using Linux to pet your dog (or to beat you off or whatever) it's all perfectly doable. All you need (as I said) is a little imagination and a little invention.
It is more likely however that it would be used to extend the media capabilities of the PSP - or perhaps to enable media sharing, in a way that is not possible with other similar products such as Microsoft's Zune.
Anyway if Linux is so godamned useless, why do you use it on your PC. Why not just ***** off and use Windows instead?
Just a thought. - aloser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was a Bochs x86 emulator. Not an ideal solution ;)
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess that's the thing about retards. Where there's one you will always find two, or more.
Anyway again try for example taking a look at Rockbox. With the PSP you could concievably have Rockbox with intergraded Wifi and extended USB storage capablities.
The thing about Linux is that it's uses are only really limited by your imagination - which is something some folks here clearly seem to be lacking. - envy860, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Line? ha. I went (not early) and there were just massive numbers of them. I too did look for hacks though. Still only have 1 or 2 games :(
- elroyel1327, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I completely agree with you mate. The thing is that I already own a PSP which is why I'm busting to get an open OS running on it. If I didn't already own a PSP I'd be all over something like the XGP.
I love the PSP, it's a neat bit of hardware, but having owned one since the day they were released here (in Aust) I now realise the real value of the various linux based devices that I've learnt about since getting the PSP. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes
- Kylem87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it was bochs and it was pretty crap. I tried it with Win95 and it worked, but it took a minute to load the start menu. Then i tried it with some small-scale version of Linux which I can't remember the name of. It worked quite quickly actually but I couldn't get past the boot screen because i needed to type something and it didn't have keyboard support!
- Ryokenshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And yet again , its PORTable.
- Kylem87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it's was all over other PSP homebrew sites about a week ago.

and here:

To name a few. - gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm very much on the fence about it myself, elroyel1327. I keep coming so close to breaking down, and getting one, but I feel I'm just too busy to push my coding skills far enough to make anything worthwhile for the system, which is what I'd most love to do with an open handheld. Still, I can't shake the urge. Also, I'm part of a small company currently developing for the PSP, so maybe it would be disloyal? ;)
- elroyel1327, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Linux is neat and all... but here's what I'd really like: http://www.elroyonline.com/misc/psphone_half.jpg - JK :P
Seriously though, a fully functional linux install on a PSP would be awesome - While the homebrew guys are doing an awesome job at keeping the PSP useful, having an open truly open platform would be killer! - thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They can't do that...Jobs' would sue their butts off.
By the way, Nice Photoshopping - dephrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hellz yea! One step closer to skype, now I might not have to buy a mylo!
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just want to be able to author my own UDP disks. If I could do that, it would make this worth it, (ssort of). I mean, switching disks is not ideal, but hey, I don't think there will ever be a solid state UDP replacement. That said, I don't own one, and the ability to run a useful OS on it would b the only reason for me to pick up a used one.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"just useless"
I don't know, whatever you think of at the time, you might want to try things like coverage of
more media formats, games, open source network enabled applications over wi fi, contacts/organiser/email and integration
with groupware suites, use as a remote control for your media center over wifi, the ability
to turn 5 dollar usb devices (ie webcams or whatever) into the equivalent of wireless devices
that cost 5 times as much, emulators, word processing, spreadsheets, accounts, programming
and the ability to use USB keyboards and mice to achieve those functions. An all-purpose universal
remote for all of your infrared devices, the ability to use nicely designed desktop software, reading RSS
feeds, reading usenet, managing podcasts - maybe streaming podcasts to your audio player's disk drive
using the wifi connection, connecting to work over ssh from your couch at home without bothering to
crack out the laptop, instant messaging over multiple protocols from your couch, ditto on the laptop,
using forwarded X to manage your photo collection or music collection in comfort whilst the full app
actually runs on the PC, a second screen for a single-PC home so that you can both browse over wifi
on your account whilst someone else is typing stuff up for work, spreadsheets and money management apps,
controlling or checking your downloads through an internal web interface without going to the computer...
...or a zillion other things that might be more fitting for you - these are just things I might tinker with doing myself off the top of my head.
Not useless at all - running linux on a device can make it 1000x more useful or even just 1000x more whizz-bang,
depending which you want. :-) - dvdcpu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Memory sticks that hold 4GB are not unpractical to own. And as I understand it, UMD's have about a 2GB capacity max. Not to mention how ***** slow they are compared to the ms for loading games.
- aloser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you mean UMD?
- Visk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Didn't they release some sort of loader that would load Mac OS 9, Win98 and Linux last year? (from what I read it loaded up in about 40 minutes)
- fpatano, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4gotta go dust off my PSP now! whoo hoo!
- dvdcpu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you make sure you were putting your 1.50 homebrew in the GAME150 folder rather than the GAME folder in your ms:/PSP/?
- Polymira, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Heh, haxored by teh Mac =p
Had to be said. But yeah, I always wondered why after how far hacking had gone on the PSP linux hadn't been ported over in one way / shape / or form yet. All I'm wanting is to run kismet in monitor mode on it, and mabye aireplay / aircrack ...mmmmm - slippers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3step 1: Linux on PSP
step 2: WIFI on PSP Linux
step 3: ?
step 4: Profit. - mrloco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Once again at Chicken
At no point did I call you an idiot, nor was my post meant to offend you. I was just trying to make a point, and the fact that you misinterpreted my post and thought 'hell, it's the Internet so he must be an idiot' stance shows your ignorance. I never said i would use the PSP as a PDA, I was just suggesting how it CAN be used.
Don't tell me I don't know how to get my WiFi card working in linux cause I do. And being able to do this is kind of the POINT of Open Source software... there's always a way to do something if you're competent enough. By the way, Ubuntu (as well as most free distros) doesn't support WiFi cards b/c they don't want their asses sued by the manufacturers. I'm sure that MS has to pay for the included drivers (correct me if i'm wrong) and keep in mind Ubuntu's FREE!
I use windows instead of linux for 2 reasons.
-I like to play games
-I'm lazy
Besides the lack of true gaming I think that Linux is a great platform, although it's not the wunderwaffe some people cut it up to be. It's an OS...face it, they ALL suck.
- ahsaraisk, on 09/22/2008, -0/+0This is great news. I have been looking forward for this day to come :)
http://www.cellphoneanswers.info/get-games-like-gt ... - topato, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Attn Dumbasses: Rockbox is NOT linux based! http://rockbox.org for more info.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1SOrt of off topic, but why cant I play my 1.50 homebrew on 3.03 custom?
All 3.03 features and the *cough* ISO Loader *cough* works - mrloco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Good start, can't wait till it's actually practical.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4yay for linux
- mrloco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@Chicken001
How about using firefox on it with a proper keyboard hooked up via USB? Calendar apps would be great... in general, the word 'PDA' comes to mind. - calebdesu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Looks good... I hope they can get it working soon without all the headache of their setup. I haven't had a reason to use my PSP for quite a while now.
- Chicken001, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1He (Jonasq) isn't being an idiot, Linux is built to run on almost anything, if you know how to work Linux better than, "Oh! Sudo! This is a neat command." Then you'd understand that most devices that has a processor in it can run Linux, which shows it's flexibility.
Actually, I've already heard, (couple months ago) when Homebrew apps could be executed on PSP that Linux was already on it, same with Windows 98. This is rather old news.
I believe this is useless, why would you run it on your PSP? What is the use for it? I mean, I would see the point if you put it on a toaster then you could make it toast bread, but, on a PSP? Tell me, what is the use for it for a built-for hand-held gaming system? The only achievement that you can have is that, "OH! I have a PSP with less features of one that doesn't have Linux on it! Woopee!"
Let me ask you Raid517, what functionality do you think running a Linux Distro on a PSP will achieve? Firstly, the OS on it already comes with mostly what you would need in a Portable GAMING System, plus with a sleek GUI. The games that you'll be running on Linux would be an Open-Sourced application of Solitaire, mind you it isn't bad because I love it, but Linux isn't perfect operating system that has a lot of developers for games.
In conclusion, I love Linux I'd never switch back, but it's pointless to have it on a portable device unless there is an actual use for it. - jonasg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1at last ? Who was waiting for this, think no-one it's just useless. But just a proof that you can run linux on almost everything.
- ernasty10050, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I see "Linux on this console" about 3 times a day now...Just what is so special about this that it needs to be posted constantly?
