It's an OS, not a religion, folks. If I wanted zealotry when I booted my computer, I'd look for the Scientology distro of Ubuntu. - Ssullivan, on 10/11/2007, -12/+49Linux didn't lose to MS in the OS area. Maybe you should go check web server OS stats sometime. For that matter the default web hosting OS on godaddy.com is Linux based. You can get a windows server but you have to specifically say you want one AND you have to pay extra.
I think it's time you break out of that MS/windows rock you been living under. - underthelinux, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36WTF MATE?!
- 7of7, on 10/11/2007, -22/+50Maybe they should focus on making software instead of fighting imaginary wars with a company that actually is busy making software. I think that's what Linus was getting at with his rant about the FSF. They are more interested in spreading FUD and starting fights than they are in software.

- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -10/+29What I'd like to see is a concerted and non-loony effort to get commercial software (mostly productivity and graphic design) ported to native versions for Linux. I love the idea of a free OS that doesn't hog my system. I love that OS being able to run any hardware I could throw at it (within reason. Driver support is part of this).
However, GIMP is no Photoshop substitute. I need Freehand, Illustrator, etc. on my machine for work, because it's what I do best with. Free software is fine, and if it works for you, great. However, many professionals need and are willing to pay for commercial software. If Adobe would embrace Linux, I'd probably leave Windows behind. - arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Linux leaders? I don't think I would say there is a cohesive sense of "leaders" in the Linux community. There are ones who may be more prominent than others, but leaders? But even the prominent ones aren't mentioned. Mark Shuttleworth was quoted, but they didn't mention Linus, RMS, anyone from Red Hat, Debian, or Novel.
- andyrobo60, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20If it doesn't involve linux powered cruse missiles heading to Microsoft's hq then its not real counterattack.
- GnuTzu, on 10/11/2007, -7/+23@bias,
In the "Linux Religion", Heaven is free and nurtured by many, and Microsoft is an underlord of vendor lock-in.
In the "Microsoft Religion", Everything is licensed by Microsoft, and everyone pays the Microsoft tribute. - MsMagoo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20And the meteor crashing towards earth is like "well, ***** that"

- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12They also stole the GUI from Xerox. Apple are masters at the 'steal the innovation' game.
- RonPaulPres2008, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Linux leaders should go after Apple. At least Microsoft developed their own technology. They should be rewarded and not conspired against for their innovations.
Apple on the other hand gives everything a shiny cover, like their unix based operating system, and markets it as an innovation. They are the true enemies and the ones that will keep technolog stagnant. - adderx99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9single page link: http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN1446888520070614?sp=true
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12The FSF isn't the Linux Foundation, two completely different organizations. The Linux Foundation sponsors Linus, so I'd say they are doing real work. And this article makes it sound like all they're doing is talking about Microsoft, when most talks are about the future of Linux, just like you want 7of7 :) It's just a foundation board, not a spokesperson for "Linux", whatever that is since hundreds of companies are involved with it.
http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS8470376604.html
"MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. -- When Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu founder and CEO of Canonical Ltd., spoke at the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit at the Googleplex, he didn't talk about Ubuntu, patents, or hardware vendor partnerships. Instead he devoted his keynote speech to the importance of collaboration in fixing bugs and getting timely patches out to Linux users. "
Companies with employees on the Linux Foundation board include Intel, Oracle, Fujitsu, IBM, BoA, HP, AMD, etc... - cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9CounterAttack on MS.........?

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9@kevinfell: What kind of trolling moron are you?
Microsoft have no currently viable product - "Vista" is a bloated re-skin of XP with added DRM, and NONE of their other products work properly. It took them 6 years for them to release the "Vista" mess, and they are now about 7 years behind the current Linux versions.
Google, who have the biggest web presence of all, are making unlimited amounts of money, and host their (home grown, proprietary) web server on top of an ordinary linux.
Windows doesn't get any consideration for REAL computing. It's an irrelevant toy for a Unix world.

I was more referring to where the focus lies...counterattack VS. software development
But you're right, both can be done at the same time - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The article lack substance. Alot of quoting here and there from different people but it didn't really say much about the conference itself.

- SwellGuy007, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Eric Auchard is a sensationalist hack.
I cannot believe the tripe this guy puts out. The article reads like some pimple-faced Dungeons and Dragons adventure.
Quotes...
"high priests of free software have congregated at Google" ...
"face down recent patent threats" ...
"alternative software movement's casual uniform of T-shirts and jeans" ...
"rival factions" ...
"open source devotees still fight among themselves with the fervor of a tiny monastic order seeking to root out theological error in their midst."
This guy needs to take his +3 Hammer of Words out of his ass and put on his +5 cloak of intelligence. - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4because Microsoft having to use their resources and FUD generators on GNU/Linux and Apple is easier then using all their resources and FUD generators on GNU/Linux?
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Linux Foundation ("merger" of Open Source Development Labs and Free Standards Group, produce the Linux Standard Base) sponsors Linus Torvalds, manages the Linux trademark, etc.
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/Protect - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9Can I ask how Linux lost Microsoft in the OS war, linux was first made in 91, which was an alpha kernel, literally the war was over before linux was even made. Linux showed up after the War was won, and slowly has been marking ground. Also about the desktop search, how many ordinary users go out of their way to get a new desktop search?? Why do you think Internet Explorer still has a huge market share on the browser market? Its a lopsided battle, if there was a battle, I definitely slept through it.
- jdhore1, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8Here's what i believe: If Microsoft wants to win the software war in the long run, they've got to shape up and so do closed-source app developers. When in any test other than one for gaming, Windows can beat a desktop-ified linux on the same machine, i'll go back to windows...maybe...Until then, i'm sticking with linux because it's better in every single aspect. Microsoft is doing the WRONG thing by all these lawsuits and stuff, they're trying to just beat Linux to the ground with lawsuits and crap instead of trying to *gasp* IMPROVE Windows.
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It wouldn't be the first time.

/sarcasm - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+57of7: "tyrannical licenses", like Vista's EULA? You forget that the GPL is a distribution license and only comes into play with public distribution, and ensures everyone gets the same rights that you received. Do whatever the heck you want at home or inside a business.
- SouLFacE, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4It seems that Reuters made out a sensationalist headline to get hits and attention.

But making little news "big" is what all the news agencies do. It is how they make money. - DarkNemesis618, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7I understand that open source supporters are ticked at Microsoft's allegations, I am too. Is a counterattack the best option, I can't say, but I do believe the open source community can't just sit by and do nothing. But Linus and 7of7 are right in that they need to work on making quality software too. If they can make software that is more innovative as a lot of open source software is, then they might be able to help advance open source that way as well.
- Ssullivan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@futureguy
I don''t think so. That report is based on revenue growth not actual market growth. There are many popular free distros such as Debain/Gentoo/CentOS that would not be included in this report. Thus this report produces an artificially large Microsoft number. - daradib, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mark Shuttlesworth?
