- gigigugit, on 06/09/2008, -12/+59The pane in the upper right corner of the Windows logo is green. No part of Tux is green. This article is false.
- sirhomer, on 06/09/2008, -14/+59Personally I use Linux because it's got legendary stability, reliability and performence. And of course being composed of 100% all-natural free software is another major plus. Really helping the environment and lowering my electric bills is just icing on the cake. But hey, I'll take it. :)
- rishubhav, on 06/10/2008, -12/+55linux + windows bashing + string "green" = front page
- postbigbang, on 06/09/2008, -5/+44Uh, tickless is discussed. Delta is 12 watts. Please RTFA.
- jasmus, on 06/10/2008, -2/+36um... people running data centers?
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -5/+33YEAH, ***** THE ENVIRONMENT!
- sirhomer, on 06/10/2008, -9/+32These comments are pathetic. Digg used to be a news site where intellegent and nerdy topics prevailed, including many involving Linux. I wish we could split Digg into it's former self and another site dedicated to the political kooks and 4chat lollerskaters who have dominated this website for the past year.
- daftman, on 06/10/2008, -0/+22I give a *****. I run a couple of servers and the electrical bills are formidable. If I can save $300 a year on electricity per site then I GIVE A *****.
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -6/+26BREAKING NEWS: NOT USING A COMPUTER SAVES ELECTRICITY, "GREEN"
- ausfahrt, on 06/09/2008, -7/+26I love linux but my dell laptop fails to sleep every time so in my case it is not greener.
- SPThom, on 06/10/2008, -1/+19This article is discussing Linux versus Windows SERVERS. Disregarding the fact that there are way, way more than a dozen apps available for desktop Linux (Ubuntu comes *preinstalled* with well over a dozen), Linux servers can run hundreds upon hundreds of protocols, applications and services... Probably more than Windows, because there are so many different flavors of services available.
At any rate, with servers (really, with any computer) efficiency is not a matter of how many services you're running, but how effectively your OS manages resources between those services, especially when those services are idling. - pastasauce, on 06/10/2008, -1/+17Distributions Mint, openSUSE, CentOS, Slax, Vector, Foresight, gOS, and OpenSolaris all have green in their logos, however.
- earthforce1, on 06/10/2008, -2/+18They don't mention the most obvious reason why Linux is greener:
You don't have to buy all new hardware when you upgrade to the latest version, because you can't find Vista drivers for your 5 year old scanner, or sound card. - 0xABADC0DA, on 06/10/2008, -1/+14Kill-A-Watt says my home computer uses 127 watts windows XP and 119 watts under ubuntu both idle, but with freq scaling. Plus Linux spins up the drives a lot less often. Was kind of surprised, expected Linux to use more power.
- daftman, on 06/10/2008, -2/+15Is it me or most of these comments got whacked by the dumb stick? It seems like a bunch of 12 years old with MTV attention span just swept through these comments.
- arcticblue, on 06/10/2008, -4/+17What happened to the old digg? These comments suck.
*opens Slashdot tab*
Ah, there we go!
(and wtf is going on with the comment box?) - jay019, on 06/10/2008, -0/+13I'd rather a dozen usefull apps that can do everything I need then millions of crap ones just to stop me getting an infection, check what I am doing, phoning home and generaly being useless.
- pastasauce, on 06/10/2008, -0/+13We don't care, but corporations looking to save some money every year do.
- voyvf, on 06/10/2008, -1/+13Despite your abundance of fail, you managed to be correct in that silly statement. Nobody does, in fact, use Linux.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobody_(username) - sirhomer, on 06/10/2008, -2/+14Windows bashing? All this says is that Linux has better power efficency then Windows. A lot of newer Linux technologies help with power efficency. Here is an example: http://kerneltrap.org/node/6750
Oh wait, I was acting intellegent, I forgot that is inappropriate behavior on Digg.
ZOMG lets all FLAME AND TROLL AND And BE ReALLY STUPID N PRENTEND WE DON'T CARE !!! LOLO. LOOK! KITTENS!!oneone - kd1s, on 06/10/2008, -1/+13Oh no doubt that Linux is greener. It is also less of a pig than Windows in any version since Windows 95. I have an instance of Debian Etch and KDE running in a vmWare partition that's 4GB of disk and 650MB of RAM and it works flawlessly.
- specialK16, on 06/10/2008, -2/+14***** THING SUCKS!
- jmhyer51, on 06/10/2008, -15/+26I logged into my second Digg account just to Digg you up twice.
- inactive, on 06/09/2008, -18/+29Exactly !! I mean seriously, WHO GIVES A *****!?
- CheTzu, on 06/10/2008, -0/+10Ironically the richest people on Earth and the poorest People on Earth.
- atdigg, on 06/10/2008, -0/+9people who want to comment knowing what they comment about.
- monoa, on 06/10/2008, -3/+12Yeah, who wants to save money and who wants to help protect the environment? Let's all just piss money away and ***** the environment - because we can... that's the sign of a Real Man (tm), eh?
- 4321234, on 06/10/2008, -5/+14Why can't windows fanboys just let linux users be happy when nice articles about linux hit digg? Linux users wouldn't act like that if people ever said good things about windows.
- zwaldowski, on 06/10/2008, -0/+8I'm really sorry about that, seriously. My battery life is, in fact, better than on Vista. Maybe if ACPI and APM weren't such a digital *****, things would work better.
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -5/+13Exactly!! Nature is nature. Technology is technology. They are not interrelated!! It's like water and oil, they don't ***** mix. I think Einstein was able to mix them up but you know Einstein did a lot of crazy ***** so I don't remember. I think I did a science lab on this last year, mixing water and oil. 11th grade final test. I got an F, cause like I said, they don't ***** mix.
- svensko, on 06/10/2008, -4/+12Take a dose of reality and realize that the gaming market for PCs is fairly small compared to all the other markets that use computers. Windows fanboys always brings up the entire 'gaming' thing. You must realize, most Linux users are over the age of 13 and aren't chronic non-stop gamers.
- dualscreenman, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7There are some decent comments. The problem is that people who aren't worthy of respect come in and take a *****/lollerskate all over them. The comments are there, they're just "buried", so to speak.
- jsully, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7How would increasing his swap help his problem?
- Ades, on 06/10/2008, -7/+14yes.. the way i use my god damn computer doesnt have anything to do with the enviroment ..
- jasmus, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7As i said above:
um... data centers? - SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -3/+10only if you're a ***** idiot
- infiniphunk, on 06/10/2008, -5/+12Certainly not you Windoze trolls.
- Gravey9, on 06/09/2008, -5/+11not surprised
- inactive, on 06/09/2008, -8/+14Take a dose of reality, gaming and market share, then reevaluate...
- buckrogers1965, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6Now multiply that by 5,000,000,000 people on earth to see the savings across everyone.
- jay019, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6Yeah, with our antivirus, spyware and phoning home I'm surprised we get anything done. *rollseyes*
- shinkou, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8No!!! IT CANNOT BE TRUE!!! Windows HAS TO BE greener than Linux regarding to the fact that it crashes sooooo often and nobody wants to use it. I have a laptop running Vista at home, but I only turn it on when I need to visit those stupid IE-only websites. To those IE-only sites' webmasters... go back to school and learn your HTML properly! Without your stupid sites, I'll be consuming power on Linux only and make Windows even greener!
- Dylson, on 06/10/2008, -3/+9No, you go.
- greenlight2001, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8If you can't beat'em, digg your own ***** up.
- infiniphunk, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6Like all other things, Windoze users like to pull numbers out of their rectums.
- pastasauce, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8Digg: It's quantity, not quality.
- daradib, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7Yes, but the article refers to Red Hat's Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
- AzureRise, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6No, you go!
- Balk2K, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6I know my laptop runs cooler with Linux, it used to rarely turn its fan off when it was running XP, now with Ubuntu it's on about half the time depending on CPU load
