Why do you have to be so ***** reasonable? Pick a side, God damn it! An Operating System is a deep, spiritual experience! Why can't you see that!? - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35no thanks, i wont ever install any crapware made by microsoft in my machine...
- Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22For web development.
As much of a pain it can be, web pages should still render properly on IE. - baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25installing something as nasty as Internet Explorer on something as Clean and Purdy as Ubuntu is as tasteless as putting a Deer Guard of the front end of a Ferarri
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Unfortunately it is needed for web devs
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19 For me,it is.
Today I did a duel boot with XP and Freespire Linux.
I had to download drivers for Windows.
Windows would not close a window that had some stupid comment and it would not shut off, so i had to unplug the computer.
Installed Freespire...It found Windows and created a duel boot.Easy as falling off a log.
After Windows was finally put in it's place,I checked out the freespire side. ALL my drivers were loaded, no misbehaving...It works great.
Video works,audio works,etc,etc,etc.
I only have Windows on here for some work and a few games.
My main OS will always be Linux.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I want to duel boot, that sounds bad ass....All my computer can do is dual boot...
Do you get swords or guns? - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Thanks for the validation code. Now I don't have to go look for mirrors anymore :)
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Depends entirely on what you're doing. For web surfing, e-mail, homework, etc., Linux definitely wins. Last night, Windows nearly made me put a fist through my monitor nagging me to reboot to finish an update to MEDIA PLAYER of all things while I was trying to work on some CGI. Never have that problem with Kubuntu, not to mention the lack of malware and such.
For many other tasks though, Windows is still the better choice. I put a game's install disk, install it, play. No need to muck around with Wine or any such thing. Ditto for my Adobe software. The simple fact is, an operating system is a tool, and each tool best fits a certain job. - TheFightForGood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13it's only equal AFTER ie is installed. it's greater before that....
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I agree. The title is (not deliberately) deceiving, the description a bit fuzzy (lacks context) and the article took me a while to digest because of the initial confusion/disorientation. I wonder how many Diggs were received for the title alone...
- Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@thepxc: You just made my day. =D
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+61. Ubuntu comes with firefox, Kubuntu comes with Konqueror
2. The only people who install IE on linux are web developers/masochists.
3. Ubuntu is not mindless
4. Download it and try it for yourself. - Benzoid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Why in the world would you want IE on Linux?? Just wondering..
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Look this was up on the news and explained the first time Microsoft released Genuine Verification. Microsoft understanding that there are people who might use MS products on different non-MS Operating Systems made them pass the Genuine Windows Validation. It makes sense. It's a WINDOWS GENUINE VALIDATION, not Linux not OSX validation.
I don't know why everyone is jumping up and down for this. - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"I suppose you are _STILL_ dual booting with :shudder: Windows."
Some people run Windows because they don't want to use WINE to run their favourite apps. 90% of the world's PCs run Windows, hence the range of software and games for Windows which vastly outstrips that which is available for Linux.
So, there are actual reasons to use Windows instead of or alongside Linux. Who'd have thought? :O - biggbrother, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It works in Linspire. But it also works in PCLinux and Ubuntu and probably lots of others. Installing a camera and most other peripherals is typically plug and play in the major Linux distributions these days. (Unlike Windows)
- Etaoin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Web design, for one thing. As crappy a browser as it is, it still has a depressingly enormous market share - somewhere between eighty and ninety percent, if I'm not mistaken. Mostly from people who don't know or care - on a Windows machine, IE comes pre-installed and a lot of users won't bother to go get an alternative browser. Anyway, the point is that if you're designing a website, you need to test it in IE because that's what a whole lot of people are going to be using to look at it.

er... yes. pretty much. If people want to communicate with me they shouldn't expect that i spend money for the privilege. Am i wrong in thinking that? - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@kodek
Except for the fact that validation codes expire after something like 15 minutes making his code useless to you. - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So 2 comments here:
1. This story's title is equal to misleading
2. Why would you choose to install IE7? I took Internet explorer off my Windows PC.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Okay. Good luck. I assume you won't try to open any microsoft file types either then? Saving/demanding everything in open office format?
- kaczus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cabextract does the trick
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Uh, yeah... Microsoft Office *.doc is *****. But regardless of that, open office can read and write those files so why would one have to demand them?
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Linux were equal to a Genuine Windows, all your Linux machine would are belong to a bunch of evil viruses & godless spyware & etc....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This story is equal to a Genuine Waste of My Time
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7at LEAST equal. at very least.
of course it depends how you're measuring, but if you're measuring on computer nerd terms, equal is very least. for the Mom test, perhaps the term 'equal' will suffice. - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Microsoft had any sense, they would support the wine project and port office + IE to linux (ala Google's picassa). Anyone telling me that there isn't a market for these 2 on linux is talking out of their hat. But the complication lies in the first few words of this post...
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are you sure he's even a n00b? I just thought he was dumbass.
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has been answered about 10 times. Its for webdevelopement. People want/need to test their pages in IE
- atrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I experienced this a while ago. I'm surprised this still exists.
I was curious for at the time if there was a way to tunnel key wga components through cygwin, X11, and wine. Would be a lot of work, but it would give you a validated windows installation (assuming your XP installation is not validated for legitimate reasons, of course. ) - kabronkline, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2if ( yourOS == Linux && yourBrowser == IE7 && you != webDeveloper) you = dumbass
- 13thfloor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like Linux. I'm also hammered. Dugg, the more resources anyone has, the better. Cheers, and merry whatever you celebrate.
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Ugh, use VMware or something, it's free and it'll keep windows contaminants off your system.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Top Tip: If you use windows for _applications_, install windows under vmware player. It works extremely well and enables me to do any necessary development. At least, give it a try.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"No offense... But "linspire" isn't much of a step up from Windows... seriously... Please don't tell me they got you with the cheap look and the flashy "ITS EASY" stuff did they.... Well.... I suppose you are _STILL_ dual booting with :shudder: Windows."
@jimmygoon
Sure it is, seriously. The 'spires are based on Debian Linux and they beat the snot out of Windows.
Linspire is just as good as any other Debian-based Linux and imho better than most, which is why I chose it last Jan. to be my OS and my only OS.
So yeah,I just had Linspire on here for almost a year. Am I happy with it? Damn straight. Do i resent people always telling me it's a crappy OS when I know better? You bet your sweet bumpkins.
I really get so sick of people trashing the 'spires I could puke through my nose.
Have you even bothered to use these or are you just recycling the fud? Cause, yeah, there is more fud spewed out about the 'spires than you can shake a greasy stick at.
Will putting my OS down stop me from using it? Not a chance.
Both ARE easy..Linspire looks better than Freespire. A new Linspire will be coming out soon.
I've used both and I like both and I will support them. If they were crap, the company would have gone bankrupt by now...But Linspire is doing fine, thank you very much.
Yeah I am duel-booting as of yesterday cause I need Windows for a few things I can't do with Linux..Had I rather not? You betcha..
Am I using Windows right now? Nope. it will only be used when I need it and once the work I'm doing adds Linux Windows is outta here.
Ok,so I'll get off my soap box and go have a spot of tea...And I'll continue to use Freespire and Linspire even if the fud gets as thick as molasses and I need a boat to get through it.
Look at it this way,I don't trash your OS,so respect mine enough not to trash mine.
***End of rant******
- jdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please remind this Ubuntu developer what is so mindless about the distribution?
- harrybozack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Windows will often give you what appears to be a valid code, only to spite you on the next screen. As the other guy said, he probably wouldn't have been able to actually install it.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wtf?
lol, what a n00b - rickmans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard from the IE tab extension although I was also able to read the following comment on the add-on page (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/):
"IE Tab is not available for Linux" - abhidut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MS is sold to linux
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7i'm with you.
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3A "Genuine Windows" what?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Can you point out the part that says "windows sucks" ?
Thanks.
ps: I'll settle for the portion of the blog entry that says "linux rules" - motters, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I can't imagine why anyone would want to use a non standards compliant browser such as Internet Explorer, especially on Linux.
- dev22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0an easy way how to get rid of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation:
WGA *****
http://wga.releaselog.net/ - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm sorry, but why are you dicking with IE?
- avram2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have indeed desecrated my hardrive with *spire, and am QUITE certain it is Linux with training wheels, and the latest Freespire is an attempt to get the "community" to handle some of their development for them. Looks like another Lycoris about to happen.
